| Wingback Steve Heard (43) brushes past Bear defense in the Spring Branch game. Spring Branch Despite Westchester’s early lead in the first three frames, the defen- sive battle ended in an upset victory of 10-7 for the Spring Branch Bears. In the clash of unbeaten teams, the Cats broke the spell after a 42-0 shutout in 1967 and a 21-0 loss last year. On a 19 yard pitch from Jeff Haas, Laurie Jones hit pay dirt for the first time in Westchester history against the Bruins. With 1:41 remain- ing in the first quarter, Steve Barton toed an extra point making the count 7-3. The Bear’s only outstanding offense came in the final minutes of the game when they scored their single TD. The “Big Orange” racked up 208 net yardage to the “Branch Bandits” 183. Offensive Catman of the Week was Chuck Orwig, while John Fiedler took honors for the defense. PLAY OF THE WEEK: Laurie Jones Wildcats clash with Bears as Sid Bemus (77) dances for a victory!

Aided by a defensive man, ‘Tom Specht sandwiches an Aldine ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage. Aldine The Orange and Whites squeezed by the Aldine Mustangs 19-7 for their fifth non-district win. In the second frame, Steve Fausett com- pleted a 72 yard drive in 16 plays tying the game 7-7. Jeff Hass followed with the only completed PAT of the night. After the second- half opener, Fausett bolted past left tackle putting the Wildcats in the lead 13-7. The last attack on the goal came with a hand-off from Haas to Frank Anderson who ran untouched for 13 yards. Jim Frasure was the outstanding offensive player of the week, while Sid Bemus was the defensive standout. PLAY OF THE WEEK: Jeff Martin 176 San Antonio Lee Undefeated San Antonio Lee pulled the covers off Westchester, handing them a 42-22 decision in the last non-district battle of the season. The Cats first touch- down came when Dan Adams moved the pigskin from 5 yards out, while later in the fourth quarter Adams scored again on a 3 yard scuttle. In the final minutes Rick Davis caught a 26 yard pass from Jeff Haas tallying another six pointer for West- chester. On a conversion pitch from Hass, Davis chalked up two more points. Despite the loss in points, the Orange and White had a 19-15 lead in first downs. The two noteworthy juggernauts of the week were Chuck Orwig on Offense and’ John Fiedler on Defense. Randy Howell (10) runs to assist. Spring Woods A capacity crowd at Tully Stadium wit- nessed Spring Woods “kick to victory” on a mere 10-7 triumph over Westchester. The Tigers, for the third time tied up a district win by a field goal. In the fourth quarter the Wildcats initiated their only scoring drive when they took a Tiger punt at their own 25. Frank Anderson then jogged 38 yards to the Tiger 17. Jeff Haas completed the drive four plays later on a quarterback keep- er from two yards out. Steve Barton booted the lone PAT. Coach Charles Dexter cited Joe Swinbank as the defensive star and Jim Frasure for offensive recognition. PLAY OF THE WEEK: Defensive Secondary Conroe In a “contest of Cats” the Conroe Tigers secured a hard won victory for their home- coming crowd by defeating the WHS Wild- cats 21-14. But Westchester was able to sport 14 first downs to Conroe’s 14 and 210 rushing yards to their 170. Despite the fierceness of clawing, the game was off to a slow start with a scoreless first quarter. While the Tigers managed a lead in the sec- ond quarter, the Cats revenged in the third when quarterback Jeff Haas completed a scoring attempt on a keeper from the one. John Fiedler (42) brings down a Conroe Tiger as Jim Hippard (75) | Dan Adams also plunged another one for a eae ie the line: six pointer. A two point conversion was scored by Jeff Haas. Outstanding defense and offense players were Steve Barton and Lloyd Stansberry. PLAY OF THE WEEK: Larry Dorsey
