WHS — Growing In Size The signs of growth became very visible around WHS beginning in the Spring of 1969. .Due to a prolonged strike, it remained obvious until the Spring of 1970. Seasons changed and so did the construction. Fall came bringing mammoth bulldozers, cement mixers and a multitude of pay-by-the-hour workers. A foundation was laid, and so were endless strings of dirt-encrusted tire tracks. The school year creeped slowly into December and the Winter season. Along with holiday spirit came frequent downpours, and even a surprise hail attack. Soon the endless strings of tire tracks disappeared to be replaced by deep lagoons of mud. No longer could one walk to the parking lot—he was forced to wade. The hallways became highways for cast off mud, and desks showed of dried dirt where a “‘thoughtful’’ person had scraped the morning’s wading off his shoes. The buildings grew and trucks filled with tar, bricks and insulation appeared around the construction site. Birds sang, trees budded and the near completion of the new wing announced the coming of Spring. To nature lovers the blossoming of flowers and new-born sparrows are miracles—to us a completed wing seems even nearer to one.

Of course, this is a very good way to become close friends with a person. Open slide rules, trombone cases, dirty gym suits and socks provide perils for the daring person who decides to brave this route. For the less nervy person there is ‘always an alternate escape plan—the arches. But this person misses half the fun of WHS—meeting its
