UH! l I lllll illlll 2-'ui ww is if llllllil I FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK The end of this school year completes the tenth anniversary of the new Westchester High School. Actually, the school started in T948 with 250 students in senior high school, in the plant now occupied by Orville Wright Junior High School. By T952 there were 884 students in senior high and the bean fields and pig ranches were giving way to homes and business buildings. The contract for the new plant was awarded October 7, i954, and building completed in July of l95o. While the plant was under construction and the community and school continued to grow and the students were on half-day ses- sions. During these early years the school suffered for growing pains, the athletic teams struggled along usually ending up as losers. Scholastically, it was difficult to compete with other older and well-estab- lished schools who were on full-day programs. After moving to the new plant students went back to a full day program lsome were unhappy about thisl, and all aspects of the school improved because of growth in student population to 1579, and hard work by teachers, administrators and students. Westchester was still taking her bumps in athletic com- petition but this was soon to change. The school was growing up and taking her rightful place among the other schools in the Western League. Scholarship was improving, we were now able to field a fine band and outstanding drill team. ln T963 we hit our peak enrollment of almost 3000 students. We were winning many athletic championships, we had a fine band, orchestra, choir, and drill team, and our stu- dent body was in good shape financially, with scholarship constantly improving this year as a climax, Westchester placed seventeen semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship competition. This is the largest number in the history of the school and highest in all the 45 Los Angeles City Senior High Schools. Our enrollment has stabilized at about 2700-2750 and Westchester is producing fine young people who are taking their places in colleges, universities, and in useful occupations. All of these fine achieve- ments did not just happen but are the result of capable and willing students, dedicated hard-working teachers, and encouragement and support from parents and the community. What about the next ten years, how will we be doing then? No one knows for sure, but the qualities necessary for success re- main pretty much the same year after year and from generation to generation. S
