South hamilton For centuries ancient Greece has been admired as a center of culture and learning, where literature, oratory, and the arts flourished. There democracy and the democratic system as we know it today was born. To ancient Greece we are indebted for many of the highest ideals that guide us through life today. Athenian youths, upon the completion of their secondary education, were required to take this oath: We will never bring disgrace to our city by any act of dishonesty or cowardice, we will fight for the ideals and sacred things of the city, both alone and with many, we will revere and obey the city's laws and do our best to incite a like respect and reverence in those about us, we will always strive to quicken the public's sense of civic duty, and thus, in all these ways, we will strive to leave this city not less, but greater, better, and more beautiful than it was when it was left to us. Though two thousand years old, this oath is still a true statement of our ideals today. We, as citizens of the United States of America and as students of Westchester High School, recognize our responsibility to pass our land untarnished on to our children, and in doing so, to help these children to know the high hopes and ideals that have made our nation great. With this hope, we present our theme tor Flight 1963, Ancient Greece. Mrs.Mc1rie Corey, Girls' Vice-Principal OUR AOITIIIIISUIATIIOH ,B 'Qw- Mr. David Patterson, Boys' Vice-Principal ,l ft l it Ill 's ' ' -.. Mr. Carroll Lockridge, Principal The Greeks had a word for it! In fact Diogenes put several words together and came up with The foundation of every state is the education of its youth. Today, speaking twenty four hundred years later to Westchester High School Seniors, he would urge you to appreciate your school, take advantage of your opportunities to learn, and prepare to take your place in a waiting world. Best wishes to you, our graduating seniors, for continuance of the success you have experienced in your high school activities. We hope you took advantage of the wonderful opportunities offered you while attending West- chester High School where you have been privileged to achieve your education under excellent conditions. Westchester High School has one of the finest school plants in the Los Angeles School System. Under the guidance of excellent teachers you for the most part have taken advantage of the opportunities open to you and are now ready to face the world and to compete with other high school graduates in college, business and industry, in military service, and as homemakers. The few who did not take full advantage of their opportunities will be handicapped for the rest of their lives. The schoolmates you are leaving behind will not be so fortunate as you. We are becoming more and more crowded, and as our enrollment continues to increase the quality of education cannot continue at as high a level with our present facilities. We, of course, will make the best of this situation, and every effort will be made by Westchester High School to do as much for future graduates in preparing them for the problems ahead as we have tried to do for you. We hope that you through your future achievements will make our school, our community, and our state proud of the many investments they have made in you. It is certainly a part,of my life that I shall long revere. This semester, school spirit has been at an all time high. There was a capacity crowd at every football game. Your Yell King, Jim Cornfield, and Song Queen, Cozette Chattin, along with their cheer- leaders and Song girls, did a tremendous job. Q The Senate, under the very fine direction of ASB Vice-President Cindy Luke, ran very efficiently. The group showed fine enthusiasm and drive. itll? i The Boys' and Girls' Leagues did an excellent job with their obiectives. The Dress-up Assembly was great, and the Spinister's Hop was a great success. The Boys' League also put on a very fine car show. I would like to thank the officers of the Student Government class for their very fine work this semester. They all did their very best to make Westchester a better school, and l know the student I body is proud of them. In my three semesters in Student Government, I have never seen a finer group of people. I would also like to give special thanks to our great sponsor, Mr. Manos. I believe my education would not have been complete without his very fine leadership and never-ending work for the school. Thank you all, . This semester the goal of student government was to unite the school into one body. ln carrying out this plan, we first wanted to make the students aware ofthe privileges and oppor- tunities we have that so many other schools dont have, With the gg' help of the Senate we proceeded to improve our sportsnights and semi-formal dances. We solved the clean campus program by reorganizing the Westchester Lettermens Club and having them work together with the other two boys' service clubs in one big crash program for a cleaner campus, As a result of its success, our boys' and girls' service clubs are now co-oper- ating as a unit instead of as separate bodies. With the help of the school organizations and the student body, it is my belief that the spirit at Westchester has been brought to an all time high, No longer does a Westchester team have to win in order to gain the support of the students. West- chester students now back their teams because they want to. Westchester students for once have a unified goal, that goal is to be the best school in the Western League and to have equal standings in the city. Westchester, during this semester, has held that standing, l know, as well as student government knows, that all the facets of Westchester's student body work well to- Lee Smief gether to maintain a high status in all that they do. All League l Bruce Lemmerman, Q. B. Bill Buelow C, All League Larry Hughes, R. G. Ralph Smith, E. All League-All City The Westchester jinx strikes again!!! Rid- dled with iniuries to key players throughout the season, the hard fighting Comet football team struggled to a second-place tie with University in the Western League. ln a non- league tilt, Westchester played Gardena in the season opener and bowed to the Mo- hicans, l3-O. The Comet varsity, however, was able to bounce back in the league open- er against Hollywood with a convincing 25-O win. Then the Comets journeyed to Palisades to do a battle with the Dolphins. West- chester, then definitely the class of the league, overpowered underdog Palisades, 20-6. The Comet varsity then prepared themselves for the Uni game, the game which was supposed to decide the league cham- pionship. However, the game ended in a 6-6 tie. Therefore Fairfax gained undis- puted lead of the Western League, and West- chester and Uni dipped to second place. ln the next week, the Comet team literally rolled over Hamilton, 27-6. Looking ahead to the all-important Fairfax game, the Comet var- sity was surprised by Jordan 27-O, in a non- league battle. Then, in the game which de- cided the league championship, the under- manned Comets bowed to Fairfax, I4-l2, before a large homecoming crowd. lt is pos- sible that Westchester might have gone un- defeated in league play if they had not sustained the iniuries which they did. In the final game of the year, Westchester cle- feated arch rival Venice 20-l3 in a windy close to the l962 season. l Rich Sproker, l.. G All League 1 . .ii l Ron Murdock, H. B Lee Scoief, E. Their brilliant T4-O record in- cluded twelve league victories and two non-league vic- tories. They defeated a strong Hamilton team, which had won the championship 3 years in a row, twice. The team was led by Ernie Hudson, who poured through ll.O points per game. But his wasn't an indi- vidual effort. The team was well-balanced, and every- one an the team scored and rebounded frequently. All in all, the season was definitely the most successful ever for a Westchester basketball team. P lllt teahouse of th Lovely ladies-kind gentlemen. Please to introduce little play of Okinawans' subiugation by American Marines, Okinawans most eager to be educated by conquerors. Deep desire to improve friction. Not easy to learn. Sometimes painful. But pain makes man think. Thought makes life endurable. So . , . We tell little story to demonstrate splendid example of benevolent assimilation of democracy by Okinawans. With these words the Play Production class of Westchester High School presented its Fall production, Teahouse of the August Moon, in the Westchester auditorium. The frothy comedy of life in an occupied country was presented at an afternoon matinee for the student body and again the following evening for the general public. The main characters were played by Barbara Gilman as Sakini, the interpreterg Bill Adamson as Colonel Purdy, the commanding officerg Pete David as Captain Fisbyy Jeff Kanner as Sergeant Gregovichg and Caroline Bennett as Lotus Blossom, the Geisha girl. The plot revolved around the merry rnisadventure of Captain Fisby as he tried to teach American customs and democracy to the people ofthe village of Tobiki, in Okinawa. The play was directed by Mrs. Dolores Fischli, Play Pro- duction director.
