59 M995 Nl 'N xbg 3 i X i ALDEBARAN The constellation Taurus is beyond question one of the oldest of the an- cient star groups. Over 4,000 years ago the Bull marked the Vernal Equinox, the position in the sky oc- cupied by the sun the first day of Spring. This yearly occurrence was the cause of great festivals and celebra- tions throughout the ancient iworld. Centuries before the time of Christ, the Bull was worshiped in Persia and Babylon. The Egyptians considered Taurus an emblem of immortality. Aldebaran is a red, first magnitude star, at one end of a clear V-shaped star group called Hyades. The horns of Taurus the Bull are extended from this cluster.
