To emphasize the value of such achieve- ments, the program grants a large number of certificates, trophies, and major cash awards. Competition and elimination begins in each individual high school, where two classes of awards are presented. The first class consists of eleven specific fields: mathematics, laboratory science, music, art, English, social science, foreign language, business, home economics, agriculture, and trades and industry. Winners in each of these fields receive certificates and are eligi- ble to compete for additional honors in the second class of awards. The second class presents engraved trophies in the four general fields of science and mathematics, fine, liberal, and vocational arts. Those winning a General Field Award participate in a Zone Contest where they have the opportunity to win cash awards. Zone winners go on to city-wide finals in competition for awards of cash ranging from S100 to 51000. In order to qualify as a contestant in the Bank of America pro- gram, a student must be in his senior year, have top scholarship rating, and be nominated by the chairman of the department in which he is competing.
