It is symbolic of the growth and progress that has occurred at Westchester High since its inception in l948. For this reason the i954 to en West room princ annual is dedicated to the present seniors who were the first cautious B-7's ter Westchester in its beginning. September l3, 1948, was a dismal overcast day, but it marked the birth of chester High School. Some benches were set up along the side of the present s 67 and 68. This served as our first assembly area. Mrs. Margaret Horn as ipal of Westchester Junior High School welcomed eighteen teachers and three hundred eighty-one eager students to the newest school plant in Los Angeles. step The word pioneer seemed to characterize the newly opened school. Each toward being the top high school in Los Angeles was treated as an experi- ment, a successful experiment. of th The construction period which ended in September of l95l unfolded one e most modern high school plants in the United States. Since that time other school systems have used modern school designs on the basis of the success it has received here. Scho With the new building came a Renaissance of competition. Westchester High ol was going to be put on the map. Athletes strove for recognition from the older high schools in the city. Prizes for all forms of contests in school activities were battled for by Westchester students. Once in awhile we reached the top. More often we were beaten by this or that high school. All the time though, we were building spirit through our own efforts to gain prestige. it as cate year We won't begin to speak of this past year as a peak, but we will consider a sturdy foundation for future years. To you seniors who have seen this growth while being a part of it we dedi- this book. Let this book remind you not only of l954, but of the past six s that you have spent putting Westchester High on its way up the ladder to the best, by giving it your best. ms ,wet , I . ., .ev CHARTER ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY, AND STAFF Mrs. Margaret Horn Mrs. Neva Herndon Miss Jo Mandl Mrs. Esther Gregory Mrs. Paula Demar Salvatore Abruscato Roger Alderson Loretta Anderson Richard Archer Jerry Angichiodo Don Baker Carol Barner Tom Bell John Baird Bob Booth Judy Bosben Jim Brown Jack Butler Claudia Caldwell Charles Campman Chuck Canniff Charles Carey Sharon Champlin Margaret Cook Hal Cowdell Michael Daniels Stephanie Darsa Tom De Young Paul Drake Cliff Eggink Charles Fraser Carol Fredson Rexlynne Gary Phil Gold J Janet Gray Dick Gray Donna Gregg Jean Hale Mrs. Evelyn Kay Mr. Fred Burt Mr. Fred Ullrich Mr. Joseph Herman Mrs. Martha Wetzel, CHARTER STUDENT BODY Carlene Harriman Gordon Harrison Naomi Haas Maurvene Helm Betty Hilton Dorothy Hoetler Ellen Jensen Janet Jesperson Barbara Jewell Roberta Juull Norma' Kaplan Pat' Kelly Mike Kimmel Francis King Walter Kirchen Kay Klein Don Klink Connie La Franchi Don Le Fever Mary Lou Leggett Jim Lindsay David Linn Durelle Lockyer Nancy Lombard George McDonald Harry Mcllvain Bob Martin Ronnie Maska Dean Miller Margot Morgan Nancy Nichols Jack Olof Leslie Olsen Mr. Edward Cheetham Mr.'James Long Mrs. Betty Faulkner Mrs. Iris Crittenden Jon Overton Edith Pattisonl Virginia Peart Barbara Phillips Mike Pollock Ronnie Rawlings Bob Reed Gary Rehberg Carol Ritter Don Robertis Don Rohrer Joan Roudine Claudette Rousseau Deanna Schultz Pat Schumert Lynette Seabaugh Nancy Shaw Jerry Shoffner' Sally Simmons Carol Smith Shirley Steele Larry Stein Marie Stuver Bob Thompson Betty Thorpe Ed Urbank Milton Vought Laddie Webster John Welker Jean Winquist Marty Witherspoon Nayleen Worsham Frances Wright ' administration We shall never forget that first morning in September 1948 when we were introduced to our high school and our principal, MRS. HORN. She has been working side by side with us ever since to aid us in achieving distinction in every- thing we have done. MRS. YOUNG has been at Westchester since September, l95l. Although she has not been with us from the beginning, she has gained much admiration from those who know her. Among her many duties are: organizing the daily bulle- tin, sponsoring the Girls' League, and arranging the master calendar for our school activities. MR. FRED TANNER has been at Westchester only two years, but the work he has successfully completed in that time is amazing. Under his sponsorship the Boys' League has become one of the most active in the entire city. He has shown a strong faith in Westchester sports, which has been rewarded by the steady improve- ment ot its teams. Mr. Fred Tanner has not been here since Westchester's beginning, but he will long be remembered before its end. fQ - sz.. ' M, ,W ,ff . ,gy MR. JOSEPH HERMAN one of Westchester High's original landmarks in the music depart- ment has this year taken over the administrative position of registrar. He has the very hard iob of accounting tor everyone in school, every period of the day, every school day of the year. He takes care of all absence records. His spare time, if any, is spent in sponsoring the Key club in coordination with the community Kiwanis club. MRS. NEVA HERNDON has been head coun- selor at Westchester High School since it began. It has been her duty to assemble the master pro- gram to tit the personnel of the school. She also counsels the B7's who are coming into our school, and the Senior A's whom she guides in their final semester. student body government ln the above picture, graduate Nancy La Boun- ty, The fall Student Body President, is shown handing the gavel of the office to Mike Pollock, who has served the school in the same capacity this past semester. These two Presidents served to the best of their abilities, as shown inthe count- less ways that Westchester has improved. Terry Paige occupied the office of Student Body Vice-President for the entire year. Included in his fine year's work were' being Senate President, participating on the Executive Board, the Service and Scholarship Board, and the Sports Night Com- mittee. Student Body Government has always been a major part of Westchester. The size and complexities have increased but the pioneer spirit remains. The Sports Night Committee plans and carries through the sports nigh activi- ties and advertisement, making each one more interesting than the last. From left to right are: T. Paige, D. Rach- low, T. We are looking forward to these Corning events with pleasure and apprehension - pleasure to the fun and friendships, mis- givings ofthe work and worries. The outstanding records and examples set by our predeces- sors provide an inspiration and goal that will test our ability to achieve. . We are proud to represent the largest A9 graduating class in the history of our school, and we pledge to uphold the tradi- tions and work that have gone before us. We will strive to our utmost to leave our mark so that others can look up to the class of '57, Bill Steigerwalt, President A9 Class, Summer '54 'Q L. A I .' at 62 MRS. PAINTER BIO FIRST ROW: D. The football team that Coach Bill Lundquist turnedlout this year was one that has come a long way since their first ball tutoring under Bob Keefer in 1950. Any high school could well be proud of them for they were in there fighting from the very start until the last minute. A newcomer to our school from Alameda High was Tom Saunders, taking top honors in tackling with a score of 37 tackles. A close runner up and last year's winner with a score of 36 was Charles Landers, Other outstanding players were, Mike Pollock at quarterback, Don Barnfather with 27 tackles, and Bob Toth, a new halfback playing his first season at football. At first we had only the G.A.A. After the girls had earned their letter, they were automatically received into the Letter- girl Club. lt was soon discovered that the club would grow larger each semester. We decided to organize an honor group for Lettergirls, with a limited membership. This group was of course called the Lettergirl Society. PROM an SENIOR FAREWELL Since the school began we have been a part of it. Six years ago Westchester was a new school with buildings still to be constructed. The un- educated scrubs of that first semester are today the Continentals. Then in the following spring another class of green B7's enrolled, and now they are the Elysians. We have reached the first of our main goals, graduation. There are new goals to set for our- selves now, perhaps higher and more difficult ones. To our teachers and sponsors we wish to ex- tend our gratitude for their patient guidance through our years of growing up and learning. They have all played an unforgetable part in our years at Westchester. 7 ,uf ,,-uizwifi Q . C. Feldman, P. Gaylord, J.
