Westby vs. Viroqua lourneying to Viroqua the following week, a large gathering from Westby saw a much im- proved Norsemen quintet smother its rival 19-6. Doug Iefson completely outclassed the Viroqua team with his zig-zagging as the powerful Westby line opened up the Viroquan's with considerable ease. A 45 yard sprint by Hoff of Viroqua in the first quarter brought the ball down to the 5 yard line but in four plays they were back on the 10 yard line, due to the splendid defensive work of Neprud, Thiege. Goettel and Co Captain Peterson V1roqua's touchdown came in the second quarter when Morrison passed to Owens in the end zone The halftime score was 6 6 The Norsemen came back strong in the sec ond half with two touchdowns by Doug Iefson who played tackle in the last quarter Goettel played guard Westby vs Mauston Although the weather conditions were unfav orable for football the Norsemen won their third game of the season by defeating Coach Olsons eleven 120 on the latters field The Norsemens forward wall Neprud Saugstad Peterson and Hall stopped Mauston s 210 pound fullback with clean solid tackles The Mauston team couldnt stop Doug Iefson from sweeping both ends with considerable ease Fritz Goettel and Art Thiege although they had leg 1nlur1es played good ball in the backfield along with some sensational blocking by Odell Olson Westby vs Tomah of the season to a powerful well balanced Tomah team in a muddy sandy field The In dians West Central Champions for 1944 scor ed the first touchdown early 1n the first quarter as a result of a fumble by our backfield The Norsemen came back in the second quarter and scored on a long march down the field Page ezghteen Doug Iefson carried the ball across the goal and also made the conversion. The Indians came back late in the second half to score 3 touchdowns while Westby just couldn't get its powerhouse to function. Center Neprud, right tackle Peterson, and left tackle Hall played an outstanding game in the front line for the locals. Westby vs. Viroqua The Norsemen celebrated their homecoming with a lot of vim and vigor, as they held their rival, Viroqua scoreless and won easily 13-0. Doug Iefson scored all of Westby s points Both of these touchdowns were made on long sweeps around the left end due to some mighty fine blocking by Therge Olson and Engh This ended the football season for the mighty West by eleven This game brought the curtain on the final performance for nine grid men name ly co captains Roger Peterson and Fredzell Goettel La Verne Hall Doug Iefson Iaran Run dall Robert Saugstad Harley Engh Leland Glefle and Paul Sherry Coach Brewer deserves praise for develop ing at the Westby High School one of the great est teams in its history Luell Neprud deserves praise as he played every minute on the grid iron This year s squad was one of the fastest biggest and most powerful teams in this ter ritory This years team averaged 165 pounds Five lettermen will return next season The seniors wish next year s team the best of luck and hope they may come through with a Con ference Championship Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby FOOTBALL New Lisbon Viroqua Mauston Tomah Viroqua 69 indicates non conference game The local eleven losl its most Crucial game Westby .................... 6 Sparta .............. , - .................... 19 ' ........... .. Westby vs. Norwalk The Westby High School basketball team opened its season the hard way by losing in a thrilling overtime period to a scrappy Norwalk quintet 27-25. The Norsemen played great ball but were unable to put the ball through the hoop on some easy shots. Neprud led the Norsemen with 9 points. Westby vs. Tomah After the Thanksgiving vacation, the Norse- men played their first conference game at Tomah. The boys must have eaten too much turkey by the looks of the score. Tomah won Page twenty-six 52 38 Cramer led the Indians with 22 points Goettel and Neprud had 14 and 13 points re spectively for the locals Westby vs Mauston The undefeated Mauston High School cagers coached by Don Olson assistant coach of Westby High last season went down to defeat to a much improved Norsemen quintet 19-17. Doug Iefson led the local cagers with 8 points. Westby vs. Sparta A last half rally by the Sparta High School basketball cagers enabled them to squeeze by the Norsemen 22-18 at the Sparta High gym- nasium. The locals led 10-7 at halftime but Sparta came back strong in the last period. Doug Iefson again led the local with 6 points. Westby vs. Aquinas Although the locals were a definite under- dog the Aquinas Bluegolds had tough time to win by a 22-l5 score. The Norsemen jumped off to a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter but were unable to score a field goal during the second and third quarters. Doug Iefson led the scoring for the evening for both teams with 9 points. Westby used a zone defense against the State Catholic High Champions of 1944 and kept the Aquinas team puzzled. Westby vs. Cashton The ball just wou1dn't go through the basket, and that is the only reason why the Norsemen lost their fifth game of the season to the well- coached Cashton quintet on the latter's floor. During the first half Westby's missing shot after shot near the basket enabled Cashton to lead 14-5 at halftime. Although Westby showed much improvement in the second half, they weer unable to overcome Cashton's lead and lost 28-20. Westby vs. Viroqua Although Viroqua was hoping to win another ball game at our local gymnasium as they have done the past two seasons they went home very unhappy Who wouldn t'? We won by a surprising 37 12 score Doug Iefson took things pretty well in hand as he scored 17 points 5 more points than Viroquas total for the evening The gymnasium was packed with more people from Viroqua than from our own city The Viroquans certainly d1dnt have anything to yell about Although Viroqua led 2 0 at one time Westby came back strong and before Viroqua could score another field goal we led 25 3 Westby vs Tomah One of the biggest upsets in the southern part of W1scons1n took place in the local gym nasium on Friday evening Ianuary 28 The Norsemen did the 1ob by defeating the highly favored Tomah team 29 25 in a thrilling over time period Tomah led all the way but the Norsemen captained by Doug Iefson found the net with considerable accuracy during the last minutes of the game When the horn sounded the score was 25 all Luell Neprud s field goal and Ken Chadwrcks two charity tosses en abled Westby to win in the overtime period Doug Iefson ta111ed 12 points for Westby Westby vs Mauston The Norsemen won their third game in a row by defeating a tough Mauston aggrega tion 16 15 at Mauston Although the game was close at all times Westby was always in the lead Doug Iefson paced the Norsemen w1th 10 points 8 of which he made in the first quar ter Iohn Steffen leading scoring king in the West Central Conference was held down to brilliant Mauston center Westby vs Sparta A capable Sparta quintet was defeated by a much improved Norsemen quintet 3125 be fore a large crowd at the local gymnasium Both teams played good ball Sparta led dur ing most of the first half which ended 1413 in the1r favor The Norsemen came back in the second half and the regulars outscored Sparta 18 5 The substitutes played part of the last quarter showing some beautiful football tactics. This was Doug Iefson's last game of the season for Westby before entering the Navy. Westby vs. Cash ton The Westby team, which had previously been beaten by the Cashton quintet, won its fifth straight ball game of the season by de- feating the Cashtonites 39-31. It is the first time that Westby has defeated Cashton on he local floor since 1940. Lank Neprud, outstanding junior, was really in the groove when he scored 20 points. Five baskets made by him did not count. This was Paul Sherry's first appearance as a regular replacing Doug Iefson Westby vs Viroqua The Westby team won its sixth game in a row by defeating a determined Viroqua quintet 2017 The Viroqua team did considerable stalling to hold the score down Viroqua led during most of the game The Westby team led by one point with two mrnutes left to play Luell Nepruds field goal in the last second helped to give Westby a three point margin for the victory Westby ended its season with SIX victories and two defeats 1n the West Cen tral Conference Westby vs West Salem At the Regional Tournament held in Sparta Westby was el1m1nated by losing the first game to West Salem The score was 2214 The Westby team was one of the biggest at the tournament and has one of the best defenses ever witnessed by coaches of other teams at the tournament The Westby qu1ntet had close in shots and even stood under the basket but they yust couldnt score The West Salem team was led by one of the greatest players in this part of the state Todd McEldowney He led the West Salem aggregation with 9 po1nts a new low for him during this season Art Thiege led the locals with 8 points followed Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby Westby VVestby ik by Goettel with 5 points BASKETBALL indicates non Norwalk Tomah Mauston Sparta Cashton Viroqua Tomah Mauston Sparta Cashton Viroqua Ik lk t Ik West Salem ' conference game Page twenty seven ' ' ' . .................... 25 ................ 27 '. . . . - ........,........... 38 .................. .. 52 ' , . . . .................... 19 .............. .. 17 ' ' ........ , ........... 18 .................... 22 4 points. Borge The editor spent every Friday wondering if the reporters would get their news in before the deadline. We all noticed that he was particularly careful in checking over the gossip column. All the reporters dashed around trying to find something to write about at the last minute. The advisor Miss Borge spent a great deal of time checking over material. We The Students Speak would have had a hard time getting along with- out her. The staff sincerely hopes that this column brought enjoyment to everyone who read it particularly the alumni in the service.
