Sweetly the angels' music, Came from that far-off shore. Far o'er the distant hilltops, Faded the golden beams: Lowly the breeze of evening Fhanted their mournful strains: Up through the shining ether, Borne on the wings of light, Floated the spirit onward, Home to the realm of light. Fair shone the light eternal, Sweet was the golden air, Panted the weary spirit, Something of light to share: Into the shilling portals, Clothed in her robes of white, Breathing the love eternal, Sings she her song to-night. Gently a voice came stealing. Over the far-oft' sea, liorne on the wings of heaven. Falling her home to Thee. ,rw 2 WSI If 1 xvrgi P Q ad -.. VI G fa .J . 5- ff . The sheriff's delight at the capture of the criminal knew no bounds. and his story. told to the people of the town. .fl Slum lt is early morning of a November day and still so dark that objects could be seen but indistinctly. During the night the weather had turned colder and a foot of fresh snow had fallen. that w-is already turn- ing black from soot. As the dusk cleared. a street in one of the poorest districts of Phi- cago was disclosed. The street was narrow. and the tenement houses on both sides al- most reached together. The houses were large brick buildings. whose color had turned bl :ck from the soot from the chinmeys of the factories nearby. The dim outline of little childrens faces could be seen through the dirty. curtainless windows. They were children who were crying for want of food. warmth. and fresh air. They were cared for by a small sister while the parents and larger sisters aml brothers went to work. ln the street tigures could be seen hurrying: along to their work. now and then looking upward at the gray. laden sky that east a gloom over the already gloomy street. They were miserable tigures. who were but thinly clad. and they shivered and huddled to- gether. drawing their garments closer is gu t after gust of wind howled down the strret blowing the snow against the frail bodies. A great number of little children. who could not be more than ten or eleven years old brought flme to Rob and Buster. Rob received the 351100 and Buster now struts proudly along after his master. and around his neck glistens a new. shiny collar, Teddy Nustad. District were on their way to the factory where they worked. They were blue with cold. and shivering. Their tingers were nulnb and almost freezing. Toward noon the weither grew warmer and the snow began to lnelt. The water started to run down the streets in little streams that grew larger and larger until they formed little rivers of mud and slush. There were no sidewalks. either of cement or planks. and the mud and wfater in the street was in some places over two feet deep. All day long the narrow street was crowded with unemployed workers who were going from factory to factory in search of work. They were wet to the knees from the slush and sometimes they would stumble and fall so that at the eml of the day they were soaking wet. Toward the end of the day. it grew cold again and the water puddles started to freeze. When it began to grow dark the working men stumbled through the street on their way home. They were almost too tired to hold out until they reached home. too tired drag up tlights of rickety stairs to a cold room where they lived. They were too tired to eat. so they flung themselves upon their hard beds and fell into a disturbed sleep. -Naomi Grimsrud. As we stood waiting for the whistle to blow at the begin- ning of the game, we quaked inwardly, as we had heard a great deal of the La Farge Five. During the first quarter, due to the close. elever guarding of Margaret and Irene. our opponents failed to make a basket. The quarter ended ti-0 in our favor. The day was bright and balmyg an ideal one for the seventeen- mile ride which we had before us. Many amusing things happened during our ride whieh helped us forget that we were tired and eold. At about tive o'eloek. just as the sun was setting and the air took on a bitter twang. we crossed the bridge just outside of La Farge. YVhen we reaehed the hotel. we found the boys already lined up on the port-li to greet us. After a hearty supper. we went to the Opera House where we were to play. Dismayed. we gazed at the rickety baskets. set up on loose poles. the stove at one side of the hall. and the slippery tloor. The game was ealled at eight o'eloek. and we went into it with the vim and determination eharaeter- istie of the team. Again the elose work of the guards prevented ha Farge from mak- ing a basket throughout the entire game. The seore at the end of the game was 14-0 in our favor. The week following this. the La Purge team came here for the first game on our home floor. Tile large size of the players made our playing ineffectual. so we lost by il seore of twenty to twelve. Q what it 2- BRIGIITVILLE INDOOR l'HAIfTAUQI'A A very entertaining musical program for the benefit of the Athletic Association was held in October. under the general manage- ment of Mr. XVeiland. Appropriately called the 'Brightville Indoor f'IlZlllf21l'l4lll2l.u and consisting of sev- eral acts, each act was a specialty in itself. The entertainers of the first act. with Miss Schoonover as platform manager. furnished several line musical numbers in the form of vocal and violin music. The second act eon- sisted of living pictures which were very beautiful under the changing light thrown upon them. The third act. with Mr. Mutch as platform manager. consisted of cornet du- ets, violin duets, piano and violin solos. Act four. called Fai-mers' Night. with Herbert Neprud as presiding oflicer. made a y-lea for farm life and the farnier's wife in the poems. addresses. and farmerette songs. The fifth and last act. featuring the Coon- ville .lubilee Singers. with Miss Schoonover as manager dressed as a coon mammy, offer- cd a very pleasing ending to the program. The darky singers. with their bass, tenor. and soprano solos. quartets. duets. mixed choruses, pianologues. and special features by the Kentucky Belles. bore one away upon wings of song. to the sunny South. The preparation for the program fur- nished as much amusement for the partici- pants as it did for the large appreciative au- dience which gathered that evening. and we may have a similar program in the future. if we can be assured of an unlimited supply of lamp black and cold cream. AMERICA YESTERDAY AND TODAY On November 11, there was twice staged in the gymnasium of the High School. under the management of Mr. XVeiland. Miss Sehoonover. and Miss Hill, a beautiful pa- geant entitled. America Yesterday and To- day. Divided into episodes, the pageant mark- ed the general progress of the American na- tion from the days of the primitive Indians to that of the modern time. Episode Une was enacted around the dim light of the camp iire. and it revived the cus- toms of the Indian days through the pictur- esque corn dances. the smoking of the peace pipe. and the silent worship of the tribes. After the Spirit of Indian Days had made her plea for her people to the Sun God. the episode ended i11 the slow. stately march around the gymnasium. led by the Spirit. The second episode showed the primeval forest when the Iirst white man forged his way through the wilderness. to conquer the forests. to build his home. and to wrest his livelihood from the virgin soil. Here we have the Spirit of the Wilderness calling forth the blossoms, the birds, and nymphs of THE WASHINGTON AND The patriotic program which was post- poned for various reasons. was given in March and proved to be very successful. Much credit must be given to the le'u-hers who so conscientiously trained the boys and THE MA Preparations are now in progress for the observance of May Day. A Cantata. en- titled The Garden of l lowers. will be sung by the Girls' Glee Vlubg folk dances. and stream and wood. to dance and make merry. to live and rejoice. Episode Three marked the religious. ed uoational. civic, artistic. and industrial prog ress of our state and nation, and was beauti- fully exemplified by the procession of differ- ent spirits representing their particular place in this work of humanity and for its welfa re, The Fourth and last episode was highly patriotic in character. The father of a World XVar hero. Mr. H. O. Stevlingson. in taking the part of Abriham Lincoln and reading the Gettysburg Address. represented the Spirit of Yesterday. The Spirit of Patriotism well guarded by her World VVar hero.
