WE BID THEE FAREWELL Mrs. Fontana joined the teaching staff at Westbury in 1968 and! she becamt a member of the high school staff faculty in 1980. Priori to that time she had been on the staff at Park Early Childhood Center, first as a teacher in the pre-kindergarten program and later as a teacher of special education. It is as a special education teacher that Mrs. Fontana is treasured at Westbury High School. Warm and understanding, she has beeiJ extremely “special.” Her concerns extend beyond the young mew and women in her class. Perhaps her widespread interest in children generally is rooted in the fact that she and her husband are the parents of seven children, all of whom were educated in Westbury! Public Schools. As class advisor to sophomores and juniors, she has widened hex acquaintances with the student component in the high school. That area of responsibility has given more students in the high school tl opportunity to know her better. We bid her a sad and fond farewel knowing that her continuing presence in the community will be reassuring to her students, past and present. i Mrs. Malone has been a member of the business education faculty for twenty years of service in Westbury. In those years, literally thousands of students have learned the skills and fine points that are needed to enter the business world or enroll for more advanced training. Even those who only sought to acquire personal skills in typing and shorthand — and, in these latter years, word processing — have profited from her expertise. Beyond her effectiveness as a teacher, Mrs. Malone has con- tributed to the enrichment of students at Westbury through her role as an advisor to serveral clubs and activities. She has guided the FBLA for many years, and more recently the Word Processing Club. Students in FBLA, in particular, have been stimulated by her zeal to attend state-wide assemblies, where they have distinguished them- selves as participants. Mrs. Malone also has borne the responsibility of business man- agement of the annual musical production at the high school. In recent years, too, she has shared the sponsorship of WISE with social studies teacher Jeanne Sadlow. By her own lively interest in many aspects of student life at Westbury High School, Mrs. Malone has endeared herself to her students. She will leave a gap that will be hard to fill because of her deep commitment to her field and to her students. J2

IN MEMORIAM Don Bo twin began his career in the Westbury public schools as an elementary physical education teacher in 1961. He joined the senior high school staff in 1968 as chairman of the department of physical education and assumed his present position as program designer in 1972. He also served as president of the Westbury Administrators Association from 1983 to 1986. From class ranks to cap and gowns, Lou Botwin was always a very quiet influence in our lives. Through his untiring efforts, he made it possible for students to move from one class to another with the least amount of difficulty. His contact with the staff was a rich and rewarding one. He was pleasant, good narured and served as an inspiration to many of us. His untimely death will leave all of us with a void that can never be filled. WE BID THEE FAREWELL Mr. Yates occupies a special place in the life of Westbury High School as a vocational guidance counselor. He came to this pan of the world from the state of Delaware, where he had similar positions in both high school and college. Preparing students for life as working adults has been Mr. Yate s first priority. He is a champion of the course offering and facilities provided to local students by Nassau BOCES. He applauds the concept of a wide-ranging work-oriented curriculum, continually upgraded to meet contemporary needs in the work place.
