FROM THE EDITORS Funny How Time Flies is the theme of this 1988 yearbook. It was the theme of our (the (.lass of 1988) Junior Prom in 1987. I’m sure, like ourselves, many of you feel like it was only yesterday when you were just a little tot beginning your first day of school, many of us here in Westbury. It was not, however, it was at least thirteen long years ago and now we will be entering a new phase of our lives, whether that be entering the work force or going on to college. Whatever it is, it will be a step that we all must take. The first sixteen pages or so of this yearbook have been set aside for baby pictures. This was done in order to give you a perspective on how we have all grown and matured into the young men and women that we are now. As you l x k through this yearb x)k now and again in the years to come, we hope that the beginning section of baby pictures will cause you to think back and remember your youth, that the middle section of various activities will cause you to think back and remember your teenage years, and that the end section of senior pictures will help you to think back and remember the end of your youth, yet, the beginning of your adult life. In addition to bringing back youthful memories, while looking through the baby section try to make it a little fun. Instead of kx)king at the names and baby faces together, cover up the names and try to guess who the baby is in each baby picture. We hope the Class of 1988 enjoys and cherishes this yearbook for years to come and to the underclassmen, we hope it gives you something to think about when it becomes your time to start anew. Little did they know you well. The homage that you paid to Twain Never should have gone in vain. The literature you loved the most Will not find a better host, And though the books you taught are closed, Laurel in your classroom grows After we have drawn the shades Your footsteps in our halls won't fade, And though your blackboard now is dark Surely you have made your mark. Today we fly the flag half mast. Your time with us flew all too fast. The lesson of a life cut short Is not one that you should have taught Though Hemingway and Dickens tell Of courage that was hard to quell. Now their stories seem so pale. Yours the starkest of the tales. A fragile, fleeting, hasty span The time of life's mere mortal plan Cut short, your life was all too dear. There's no poetic justice here If we can see beyond our fears And try to look beyond our tears. We II find you, Dents, making jest With all the writers you loved best. by Susan Joan Fishbein, with thanks to A. E. Houseman in loving memory of Denis C. Castellano In honor of Denis C. Castellano, we dedicate the 1988 Wing and Spur. Mr. Catellano was born in Brooklyn where he attended local public schools. He attended St. John's University, and earned a bachelor's degree in English. American literature was Mr. Castellano’s specialty, and this was the focus of his master’s study at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro. He began his career September 1968 as an English teacher in Westbury High School. He was the designer and first teacher of the senior elective course entitled, “Modern American Novel.” Mr. Castellano was widely known to students because of his close daily contact with them as teacher and extra- curricular adviser. He assumed many assignments beyond that of his classroom duties. He served as Faculty Advisor to the Future Teachers of America, Class Advisor and Student Council Advisor. He was a dedicated teacher with a, deep concern for all humanity. Denis always respected the opinions of his students and peers and was often willing to spend additional time to complete a project or solve a problem. He contributed greatly to the smooth functioning of the English Department. Through his knowledge, experiences, and understanding, he brought to Westbury High School a willingness to motivate others. For these same attributes, we know that our lives are richer having shared them with Denis. 50 IN MEMORIAM Don Bo twin began his career in the Westbury public schools as an elementary physical education teacher in 1961. He joined the senior high school staff in 1968 as chairman of the department of physical education and assumed his present position as program designer in 1972. He also served as president of the Westbury Administrators Association from 1983 to 1986. From class ranks to cap and gowns, Lou Botwin was always a very quiet influence in our lives. Through his untiring efforts, he made it possible for students to move from one class to another with the least amount of difficulty. His contact with the staff was a rich and rewarding one. He was pleasant, good narured and served as an inspiration to many of us. His untimely death will leave all of us with a void that can never be filled. WE BID THEE FAREWELL Mr. Yates occupies a special place in the life of Westbury High School as a vocational guidance counselor. He came to this pan of the world from the state of Delaware, where he had similar positions in both high school and college. Preparing students for life as working adults has been Mr. Yate s first priority. He is a champion of the course offering and facilities provided to local students by Nassau BOCES. He applauds the concept of a wide-ranging work-oriented curriculum, continually upgraded to meet contemporary needs in the work place. WE BID THEE FAREWELL Mrs. Fontana joined the teaching staff at Westbury in 1968 and! she becamt a member of the high school staff faculty in 1980. Priori to that time she had been on the staff at Park Early Childhood Center, first as a teacher in the pre-kindergarten program and later as a teacher of special education. It is as a special education teacher that Mrs. Fontana is treasured at Westbury High School. Warm and understanding, she has beeiJ extremely “special.” Her concerns extend beyond the young mew and women in her class. Perhaps her widespread interest in children generally is rooted in the fact that she and her husband are the parents of seven children, all of whom were educated in Westbury! Public Schools. As class advisor to sophomores and juniors, she has widened hex acquaintances with the student component in the high school. That area of responsibility has given more students in the high school tl opportunity to know her better. We bid her a sad and fond farewel knowing that her continuing presence in the community will be reassuring to her students, past and present. i Mrs. Malone has been a member of the business education faculty for twenty years of service in Westbury. In those years, literally thousands of students have learned the skills and fine points that are needed to enter the business world or enroll for more advanced training. Even those who only sought to acquire personal skills in typing and shorthand — and, in these latter years, word processing — have profited from her expertise. Beyond her effectiveness as a teacher, Mrs. Malone has con- tributed to the enrichment of students at Westbury through her role as an advisor to serveral clubs and activities. She has guided the FBLA for many years, and more recently the Word Processing Club. Students in FBLA, in particular, have been stimulated by her zeal to attend state-wide assemblies, where they have distinguished them- selves as participants. Mrs. Malone also has borne the responsibility of business man- agement of the annual musical production at the high school. In recent years, too, she has shared the sponsorship of WISE with social studies teacher Jeanne Sadlow. By her own lively interest in many aspects of student life at Westbury High School, Mrs. Malone has endeared herself to her students. She will leave a gap that will be hard to fill because of her deep commitment to her field and to her students. Angela Yvette Roberts smiles as she is given her ring. Ghillaine, Samara, and Anthea chitchat a little as they move to the beat, 48 This year's Junior Prom was a big success. Everyone seemed to enjoy them- selves. They enjoyed each other’s com- pany like Laura and Eric or slow' danced with their favorite person like Roger and Judy or Guy and Nelsie. They also posed for some pictures like Elisabeth, Anita, Meagan, and Tra- cy, showed their joy with a kiss and a hug, or just relaxed for awhile with some friends. It really didn't matter what they did or how they did it, but whatever they did, they had a great time. 49 HOMECOMING “1988” (above) Homecoming King, George VanNooten, and Homecoming Queen, Armanda Torres.
