Westbury Downs Lackawana For State “It’s Truly Been That Championship Season” By DAVID WINZELBERG Glens Falls, N.Y. — The Westbury Green Dragons had heard much about their opponents in the days and hours before their battle with Lackawanna for the New York State Class B Basket- ball Championship. They heard that the Steelers were too big and too quick. But from the opening tip. the Steelers began to hear from Westbury Friday night in the game that gave the Dragons their first ever state title, with a 6560 victory over the Steelers. After a fairly even first quarter, when both squads appeared a little shaky, Westbury's 6-5 center John McCallum asserted himself inside, scoring eight of his game high 25 points. Mc- Callum dominated Lackawanna center Quinton Jacobs underneath and with three minutes left in the half sent one of Jacob's attempts into the Glens Falls Civic Center's seats. With Westbury leading 26-23 at the half, the Dragons came back from the intermission looking much more confident. Although they didn’t score another field goal till near the end of the third quarter, foul shots by McCallum, guard Tim Prewitt and forward Jonathan Northcutt helped secure a four point cushion for Westbury into the final eight minutes. McCallum, who was voted to the tournament's Class B all star team, opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play after fighting three Steelers for an offensive rebound. A minute later the Westbury center blocked a shot at the other end of the court to begin a fast break by Prewitt who fed Northcutt underneath for the Dragon's biggest lead, 45-33 with 6:45 left. But the team from Buffalo, (22-3), fought their way back with pressure defense and a one man offensive show from their highly regarded forward Jeff Taggart. Taggart, who scored 18 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter, made several steals and kept Westbury from breaking the game open. The 6-3 Taggart almost stoke the title with his heroics, and when his 15 foot jump shot fell through the net with 45 seconds left, Westbury's lead had been cut to two, 60-58. But Dragon guard Peter Larsen made two pressure foul shots to widen the gap, and Prewitt raced downcourt for one of his patented jams to end the contest at 65-60 and give Westbury the state championships. For Westbury, it was almost over before it started, as several of the players were feeling the pressure of the biggest game of their lives. All our kids were sick before the game, revealed assistant coach Ed Johnson. “One of them threw up three times. But they sucked it up. They hung tough.” “We worked so hard preparing them psychologically, that I think we over prepared them, said Dragon coach Martin Reid. But this feels good. Sitting on the bench after he had contributed 18 points to the winning effort, a beaming Northcutt screamed. “Who said Westbury wasn't legit? The six foot junio was also voted to the Class B all star for his weekend's work. It's a very happy day.” exclaimed former Dragon coach Ed Krinsky. “This is a thrill that's difficult to describe. After their state championship victory, the Dragons went up against a team from Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx for the Class B federation title on Saturday. Unfortunately, with the state championship already under their belts, Westbury (23-5) lacked the motivation for this contest and were defeated by the powerful Stompers 72-54. We were not mentally in this game, said assistant coach Ber nie Strauss after the loss. We won our championship yesterday. Our kids were celebrating Iasi night. Although the Saturday loss to Gompers put a temporary damper on the Dragon's spirits, they left Glens Falls with the respect they sought all year and the state championship they deserved. The season's been a dream plus some come true, said coach Reid. It's truly been that championship season. 87 88 89 90 class UNDERCLASSMEN To the Underclassmen we leave legacy of Unity and remember: To do all that is possible you must attempt the impossible, To be as much as you can be you must dream of being more, The past cannot be changed but the future is whatever you want it to be. — Laurene Williams 92 93 Christine Tanya Natasha Danny Abbateillo Abrams Alleyne Andujar Joseph Deborah John Anteri Ashley Bahrenburg Marc Baker Phillip Vincent Andrew Kevin Barber Bell Bel la mo Bellamy Simone Cecila Be I lot Benavides Donald Comer Anthony Eason La verne Blackwell Michelle Avent President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer °ctavia Denise Charlene Robert James Benjamin Beswick Blackwell Blount Boyd Peter Boyle Jody Brinson 94 Monica Deborah William Britton Brooks Brown William Bull Thomas Lynette Angelo Burke Carr Caruso Ward Cooper Ellengton Cavasco Karl Clarke Greg Cobbs Richard Cochran Vladmir Coe Danny Collins Richard Robert Carmella Mary Nicole Carl James Core Core Constanzo Cotten Dave Davis Davis Felix Desarmours Jean Der osiers Michael James Edmund Mildred Gerry Davis DeCiutiis Deguzman Dejean DeLucia Marie Pierre Winfred Fabian James Bernard James Dextra Ducarmel Dukes Dunkley Dykes Eliis Ellerby George Fagan John Saeastizado Nicole Flore Flores Francis Warren Finley Beverly Garza Piere Gallazar Tammy Garrett Sarah Getoff Adrienne Guice Carla Pamela 95 Gumm Hallman Tracy Little Manny Marano Giancarlo Marchesi Alysia Mas sop 96 Luis Perez Benita Persa ud Judith Peterson Joseph Pettway Cheryse Phillips Nerissa Phillip Joseph Piscitelli 97 Yolande Stallworth Nina Strachan Eugene T ribble Redonna Sweeney M.
