I must change. Though I will be able to come back and visit the past road, which was fun and unforgettable, I must at least try a new one. K. Reardon 5 The person next to you is the greatest miracle — and the greatest mystery you will ever meet at this moment The person next to you believes in something, stands for something, counts for something, lives for something, labors for something, waits for something, runs from something, runs to something. 7 10 11 12 Many things can’t always be expressed through verbal language — so we use pictures to explain. 16 table; of contents OPENER .................... DEDICATION ................ FACULTY..................... ACTIVITIES.................. AL TERNATE EDUCATION........ EVENTS...................... SPORTS...................... UNDERCLASS.................. SENIOR...................... BUSINESS................... 18 We know that you have always cared for us. even though we might not have always shown it. We realize that you are a very busy man. but somehow you always find the time for our little concerns: you might think that we do not notice such things, but we do! We are aware of all of your deeds of concern, large and small, and we appreciate them. You are active every moment of the day. involved in your duties revolving around us. Running a school is no easy job. our needs are enormous . . . we want field trips, dances, fund raisings . . . all needing your help, guidance and approval. Add to this the needs of the total school environment and you have an insurmountable job to fill: but. you never back away from that job — you tackle it. We know, for instance, that behind that solemn, stern look that is always sending us to our next class, there is a visage of kindness. You do not always show it for it is your duty to be our figure of authority. You have allowed us our fun. ever-watchful and vigilant, always realizing that youth must have guidance to suc- ceed in later life . . . for this we respect you. However, we also know that you cannot help but join in with us at special occasions. You are always at our dances and there is always a smile on your face because you enjoy these affairs as much as we do. Are all your efforts worth it? You know they are! On graduation day. as you stand in front of a sea of green and gold, there is no mistaking the gleam of pride in your eyes and the sense of accomplishment in your stance. Then you know for sure that you did right by us. For all this, and for the many things you do for us. we dedicate the 1978 Wing and Spur to you. Mr. Harvey Kul- chin. above all to indicate to you that we are aware of the role you have played in our lives, and that we appreciate that role. Perhaps it is long overdue, but the student body of Westbury High School gives you its thanks. 20 {J nbuiC Ln Cibiation DR. R. LANSKY Superintendent of Schools DR. J. Coaches John Fasano, George Hull and Tony Barchuck worked hard in preparing the team for the tough schedule that faced the team. The Dragons ended the sea- son with a 1-7 record. The team was led by two outstanding running backs: Richie Ravenell and Bryan Marshall. The line was inexperienced but Paul Ruiz. Jerry Gray and Paul Hoffer were bright spots. The highlight of the season was the 20-12 win over Floral Park on homecoming day. It was a year that found the Dragons experimenting with the sin- gle wing, in hopes of confusing their opponents. Much improved since early season games against non-league opponents, the Westbury High School Varsity Bas- ketball team is on its way to a fourth straight North Shore Division III championship. Though the Dragons lost to Roosevelt. Freeport. Hempstead and Southside. they are undefeated in league play through eight straight games. The current starting line-up is well balanced. Captain Rodney Crowe is a legitimate All-American candidate. Andre Williams and James Powell (both juniors) have been consistent performers at the forward position. Siegfried Nor- man. a senior, and Kerry Worthum. a junior, have given Westbury the best backcourt combination since the days of Dennis Duval. Bench strength comes from Philip Glover. Darryn Worthum. Levon Howard and Larry Minor. Other graduating seniors on the team that lend strength are Derrick Brown. Emmett Smith, and Johnny Thomas. Good Job Dragons. 87 FIRST: R Slornson. R Bulman. M Broun. This year's Varsity Swimming team was coached by Jack Lyons and was led by Captain Jim Gibney and fellow senior Jeffrey Kramer. The team was com- posed of three seniors, two juniors, four sophomores and seven freshmen. Due to the youth and inexperi- ence of the team the individual achievements depended on the guidance and leadership of the vet- eran upperclassmen. The big victory of the season was a 102-73 decision over Freeport. In that meet Jim Gibney and Jeff Kramer were triple winners while Karl Malchar and Tom Gibney were both double winners. With the wealth of youth on this year’s squad. Coach Lyons is looking forward to productive sea- sons in the future. 89 Captain Jim Gibney speaking al the Winter Sports Ralley. =£ OCCEZ 35? Playing with a team composed of mostly tenth and eleventh graders the team wound up with three wins. I tie and eight losses. Finding a durable goalie was a major problem. Broken fin- gers put two goalies out of action and this contributed to the porous goal tending. Through a lot of hard work and perseverance the team completed it season with an admirable record of four wins and three losses. Outstanding individual achievements were made by Audrey Watson in the sprint events and the discus throw. Sylvia Hicks was a valuable participant also in the sprints. In the High Jump and the Long Jump. Rachelle Willett excelled. The girls track team is a relative newcomer to the scene of Westbury athletics. The success that the team has had in the relatively short existence of their presence is something that Westbury should be proud of. Keep up the good work. FIRST: D. Dilliard. G Royal. R Agncsc. C.
