WING AND SPUR WEST BURY HIGH SCHOOL VOLUME 29 JUNE, 1976 2 Leisure at its best may be a form of art; how we express ourselves is a reflection of who we are, or who we'd like to be.......................... Leisure is the mirror that captures and radiates this light — making us sparkle even brighter — or it can reflect inwardly to let us see how we really are inside. In short, our free time may show us hidden aspects of ourselves and the people around us, but this is not its primary function. We NEED these hours to escape the regimentation of daily life. 8 Get up ... . Eat . ... Go to work .... Work Eat .... Work some more .... Come home . Eat .... Sleep .... Get up.............. Since it is frequently a change of pace from our routine, free time is regarded as a valuable thing, and rightly so. fagine how dull we would be if each f had one job onp nil ' eac'L °f Us 1 ’ °ne all-™nsuming interest. PERIOD 12 3 4 11 Our leisure time, on the other hand, allows us to dabble in a variety of subjects. We may not be experts; the only criterion is that we WANT to be involved ... or not be involved, as the case may be. During our idle hours there are so many possibilities that at times it's difficult to decide what must not be overlooked. Those students who have never had you as a teacher have truly missed an experience. Your dry humor, your dissertations on life, your anger when we didn't do our assignments, your efforts to share with us an appreciation of life through art, music, and literature—all this has made you a person not easily forgotten. To those of us who have known you, however, you have become more than a teacher; we know you are someone in whom we can confide, from whom we can seek advice, and with whom we can share our dreams and aspirations. Although at the time we may not fully understand, nor appreciate your sincere concern for our welfare, we value your opinions because we know they are drawn from vast personal experience. You sometimes advise us against doing what we want to do, because you care about us. As you once told us, you will miss us when we graduate. We thank you for your feelings for us and for your twenty years of yearbook service, Mr. Joseph Raziano. LIBRARY FIRST: N. Darcelin, L. Zee, C. Sokoloff, B. Ludeman, adv., C. In general, its purposes are to help students assume responsibility for their own learning and to allow students and teachers to create a school community of their own design. The concept of a school building as the educational center for learning is minimized and, instead, students are encouraged to find their classrooms, their curricula and, in many cases, their teachers from among the bounti- ful resources of Long Island and its surroundings. Under the guidance of Ms. Marilyn Silverman, Mr. Tony Moreno and Ms. W. M. Mem- minger, the fifty seniors enrolled in the New School have created a program that is serving as a model for hundreds of school districts throughout the nation. the Gaera g-ccaooL 47 BOCES — the Board of Co- operative Educational Servi- ces — provides career train- ing for thousands of students throughout Long Island. The 1975 varsity soccer season turned in- to a disappointment for the Dragons, as an injury-riddled squad missed the playoffs for the first time in five years. After a fast start, the hooters were hit by injuries and slowly began to lose their 'lock' on a playoff spot. As the season came to a close, Westbury lost two crucial games to Great Neck North and South. These games knocked them out of the pic- ture. Post season honors went to Charles Beck- ett (All-County) and Louis Stasi (All-North Shore). SOCCER Louis Stasi on his way to a goal against Plainview Kennedy. With their guidance, the team won its first jj three games and appeared to be on its way to the playoffs. Two key losses in the team's next three games, however, ended any dreams of a championship. Individually, 9 four Dragon players went on to capture post season honors. This does not really reflect the ability of the team, however, as many matches would have been dif- ferent if not for numerous forfeits. Three Westbury wrestlers went on to the North Shore Championships. They were Joe Martin, Marty Lavergne, and Craig Arnel, who all eventually lost. TRACK The track team started out strong by winning four of their first five meets, but lost the last three and had to set- tle for an even 4-4 record. Led by captain Michael Walker, the Dra- gons opened the season slowly, losing many of their pre-season games. When Glendon Vernon got into the lineup, how- ever, the Dragons started to jell. After finishing their pre-season, the Dra- gons opened up at Division and won that game and their ensuing eleven games. Many of these were one-sided games as the Dragons methodically tore through their schedule. Westbury then went into the playoffs and played four exciting games, finally losing to Malverne, 60-43. Those who received honors were: Michael Walker (All-North Shore), Ray Dumpson (All-Division), and Glen Vernon (All- Division). Next year, Westbury has a good chance of having another strong team. 69 J. V.: FIRST: R. Jackson, D. Wortham, D. Brown, E. Craft, capt., J. Nurse. SECOND: S. Mason, N. Palmer, J. Watkins, P. Although the team's record was a paltry 3-14, swimmers Eric Hahn, Rich Gibney, Jim Gibney, and George Bohcali all scored over 100 points for the season and were involved in the breaking of several school records. Eric Hahn was the only Westbury swimmer to compete individually in the Section 8 championships, finishing tenth in the 100 yd. backstroke. 71 Varsity: FIRST: L. Shelley, G. LeClaire, P. Daddio, F. This team, which was the first Westbury team ever to take a spring training trip to Florida, came back with high hopes of a divisional title. After their 5-1 start the Dragons lost six games in a row, making any chance of a playoff spot dim. Coming into their last series with Great Neck North, the Dragons needed to win two out of their three remaining games to make the play- offs and they were unable to. Four players that deserve to be mentioned are Seniors Gary Burns (All-Division), Mark Dunham (Honorable Mention), John Wygand, and Junior Pete Daddio (All-Division). J.V.: FIRST: J. Komaroski, H.
