1973, Wing And Spur, Westbury High School, Westbury, New York, Volume 26 1 i® W We Are Comprised Of The Time Around Us. And With Time Pass All Seasons; — Seasons And Time Are One. The Seasons Mold Our Lives — So Much Of What We Are Is Shaped By Their Touch. 3 5 With every change begins a new cycle which brings life in some new form before unseen and untouched and ours for the taking. Our lives are guided not only by the four seasons of the year, but by every mood and phase that we experience. 8 o mimtutui HHHIIUUII mntuumi tmmimm luummm umnttimt HlttUUIMt niniiniiii immiiuti imiiiiiHii) nmmumi 11 Each One Meets His Own Season In His Own Time. Since I Am Not You Our Lives Are Never Identical, Although Our Paths Often Cross And Meet — Sometimes To Last Forever, And Sometimes Only Briefly. 15 Sometimes our paths run side by side, as our seasons coincide — and we walk together. But no one walks in our own shoes; these things are ours alone for we are each a being unique in this world. You may show displeasure at irre- sponsibility, but you will listen to reason. You care, quietly. You teach, quietly. You make us laugh, and you make us learn, all with the low- keyed style which is so much a part of you. We salute you. We know of your honesty and of your unique devotion. We have all heard the dry humor by which even the most hostile are con- quered. We have seen your concerned anger and your sympathetic advice; we know that our fail- ures are yours, and our successes are your triumphs even as they are ours. We respect you, and trust you. and have faith in your compassion. So to this, to all of this which is so good within you. we dedicate the 1973 Wing Spur. HOMECOMING PARADE The students of Westbury High School each year welcome in the new sports season and the first football game, by marching down Post Avenue. JR. dean of students RAY N. SOUTHARD Retirement is not an end — rather it is the beginning of a new phase of one's life. It offers the opportunity for travel, relaxation and some well earned leisure. In February 1972 our assistant principal, Mr. Ray Southard retired after 37 years of service to the students of Westbury High School. Mr. Southard taught Science and Health for many years before being promoted to assistant principal in 1955. Mr. Southard will long be remembered as the person who handled most of our scheduling. His warm smile and friendly manner will always be remembered. He will serve as a constant source of inspiration to all of us. He always seemed to have that extra few minutes to spend with us. So long, Mr. Southard and thanks. Thanks for your kind- ness, your warmth and your understanding. We hope that you and Mrs. Southard are blessed with many happy and healthy years of retirement. HARRIETTE KUHLMAN What are the most severe problems facing India today? Such a question might seem difficult to answer without the aid of an expert. We have been fortunate in having such an expert as a teacher for many years here at Westbury — Miss Hariette Kuhlman. Miss Kuhlman retired in June 1972 after 27 years of service in Westbury. During her years at Westbury she inspired fac- ulty and students with her understanding and wisdom. Her classes were always enriched with stories of her many trav- els to Europe, Asia and Africa. During her retirement Miss Kuhlman plans to continue traveling to all parts of the world. We want to thank you, Miss Kuhlman. for your contribu- tions on our behalf. We hope that you are blessed with many happy years of retirement. 39 The faculty of our school should not be separated from the various clubs of the students. Those activities in which the students hold an interest are an extension and a variation of the learn- ing available in the classroom. 40 JOHN FASANO chairman COMMERCIAL ARTS — PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE Education is synonymous with growth — there cannot be one with- out the other. Many try to educate, but no true learning can take place unless we want to be taught. A teacher cannot open our minds, but can cause us to open our own minds. The true teacher is that one who can instill in another person the will and desire to see new things. And once that desire is there, we find we can learn from every experience and from every person, even ourselves. 42 HELEN COX MERRILL DOLLAR CLARK HENRY chairman THELMA MALONE DRIVER EDUCATION —AIMING FOR SAFETY The best and most important part of every man's education is that which he gives himself. By exposing ourselves to other people and other activities, we broaden our field of learning and give ourselves more opportunity to grow. 43 THOMAS NUNZIATA ENGLISH — GATEWAY TO THE MINDS OF OTHERS MAY SHEEHAN chairman PETER BUTTNER We are warehouses, always being filled and increased and becoming richer with the wealth of learning. Learning compliments itself because all things are inter- related — what we have learned from past experiences stays with us to strengthen the future. If we listen to all that we have been taught, we will emerge wiser and more complete. KEVIN McGILL DENIS CASTELLANO LYNN KAPLAN VEDA NEU 44 MARKTANNEY LILLIAN WISNIEWSKI ROSALIE RAFTER DANIEL WILLIAMS Perhaps the full value of what we have been taught will not be apparent to us now, but at some other time. And in that other season, we will also see the teaching we have done for others, by the people we are and by the ways we have sown ourselves in each other. 45 WHISP —THE VOICE OF WESTBURY HIGH ON PAPER Editor-in-chief Roy Appelbaum. Their 2-6 record reflects the rebuilding season engineered by coach, Tom Nunziata. Junior running backs Al Davis and Darwin Glass emerged as outstanding prospects for 1973. as did defensive linemen Jim Reardon and Lou Allocco. Senior co-captains John Simeone and Frank Franzese directed the defensive and offensive units, respectively. Si- meone's aggressive play climaxed in the 8-0 shutout of Roslyn. Franzese ran the option well all season long, af- ter mastering the complex offense in the pre-season. The campaign was highlighted by the 12-6 win over Great Neck South. The winning touchdown came on a quarter- back Zeke sneak, after Davis had scored Westbury's first points of the season. John Simeone and Al Davis were honored by being se- lected to the All-Division III team. VARSITY FOOTBALL: First: A Stephenson. K. Little. A. Davis. J. Miles. F. Franzese (capt ). J. Simeone (capt). The team finished with a 5-5 dual meet rec- ord a vast improvement over last year's winless slate. Co-captains. Jim McAnulty and Darrell Lewis led the team with most of the firsts and seconds div- ided between them. Gary Russell. Jeff DeVito. Rich Shelley, and Pete McAnulty contributed most of the other points. Strong and determined performances were also turned in by Mike Clements. Clyde Dillard. Jeff May, and Irv Campbell. Mr. Gully and his entire team are to be congratulated for their fine season. The harrier's outlook for next season is excellent with the only graduates being J. McAnulty. R. Shel- ley, and I. Ill SOCCER All County halfback Lome Moon and all North Shore fullback Danny Smith led the Dragons to an undefeated Division III championship. Moon was later named to the all-middle Atlantic team and was chosen honorable mention as an All- American. Moon's injury late in the season cost Westbury a possible county championship. It was because of this injury that Smith was chosen as the team's most valuable player. Randy Mirkin had an outstanding year as an All-Division right winger. Phil Compte, an outstanding year in goal, and Marshall Seally, a great year at fullback. Unfortunately, fate kept the three year dynasty from its goal — a county championship. The New School is an educational concept that has been developed as an alternative approach to the tradi- tional senior year of high school. In general, its purposes are to help students assume responsibility for their own learning and to allow stu- dents and teachers to create a school community of their own de- sign. In order to best serve the fifty students' needs a wide variety of courses, work experiences, and work-study programs are made available. Teachers and counselors come from within the school com- munity as well as from within the local Westbury community. 135 The New School has done many things for its students Life is made up of goals, and for most people, these goals are met after and outside of the bounda- ries and invisible barriers of the high school. The New School is removing these barriers, and of- fering to its students the oppor- tunity to individualize their goals, their actions, and their thinking. It's difficult to place ourselves In another's situation. In between class time is just as important. The students are offered a chance to leave the given security of the high school, and to learn how to know themselves enough to teach themselves. It is a step out of high school, and into a world of self- determined learning, behavior, and decision mak- ing. In addition to subject learning, New School members are learning now some of the realities they must contend with in life, and they are learn- ing how to use and how to handle who and what they are. to form their own valuable relationships with themselves, each other, and the outside world. 136 Dependent study.” Democrat Bob Rowan and Assemblyman John Kingston debate the 1972 election. High school has been a season in our lives. The hours and days and years spent here; think what we’ve given to them and what they’ve given to us. We were young and sus- ceptible, vulnerable and open, and we have been molded; educated — our characters have been shaped within these walls. For some it brought about a conflict of val- ues, for some it was a re-evaluation of one's own values. For all it was an education of what value is. For some these years have brought answers and fulfillment, for some they have raised questions and left doubts. But for all it was an awakening; all have been a part of the process and flow of knowledge. Bambi deer, would you get off my back. Make sure you get my good side. This is your life Lome Moon. 182 Tony your rates are outrageous. I hope no one's looking, I wouldn't want this studying to ruin my reputation. And we have learned that although we are so much the same, we are also different. Although we are together, we are also distinct. We leave this phase, or season of our lives and enter the next cycle, with the memory of all that has pas- sed. We are armored with our own human worth, and all the knowledge we have accumulated, each in our own way. The Three. 183 What is he smiling about? Zzzz What is our own culture? High school life has changed. Is it more intellectual, or more apathetic? Are we a generation of meaning, or of emptiness? Are we more individualistic, or do we merely wear the costumes different from those of the past? Our culture is whatever each one of us takes away with him — our own feel- ings and thoughts, our own memories. 184 Look, you've either got it or you don't. U! 185 Were they talking about ME? Surely if you agree your gift is a personal ex- pression of good taste, then purchase it from an organization designed for quality but never forsaking price considerations. During the holiday season of Chanukah and Christmas, many salesmen make three cardi- nal mistakes: 1. Their gift is inappropriate. 2. Their gift is not in proportion to the dollar volume of the order. 3. They are spending entirely too much mon- ey for that gift. Sales Gifts Ltd., with over 4000 items, has the largest degree of latitude in executive gift sales available in any region in the United States today. A variable number of gifts and price considerations are offered in any amounts offering great fluctuation to meet demands for appropriate items. The cost, due to the large volume, is approxi- mately 40% below retail cost. All items are gift wrapped and sales greetings are. if desired, art crafted and inserted in your gift. The entire order is then shipped prior to the holiday sea- son to you. Samples of all items will be shipped to you for your inspection and our guarantee as always — “If you can buy this item at a lower cost in any store in a gift box, gift wrapped, simply return the items at our cost and your money will be promptly refunded.” write or call: j. ussia 1005 park blvd massapequa park, long island, n.y. 11762 516-544-3838 SALES GIFTS LTD. The complete significance of this time in our lives can never be fully appreciated or understood until the season has long past. Only the future will bring the knowledge and perspective to understand all that the present is. For this reason, „ change is vital to learning and growing. And so growth not only continues with, but is dependant upon, every new turn. May each one be able to face and accept the changes in his life, and be able to carry whatever each change may bring. May we also use the power within us to guide ourselves and to bring about change when it is due. Our sincere thanks to Mr. Robert Seckler, Mrs. Eleanor Merritt, and Mr. Joseph Ra- ziano, our faculty advisors; Mr. Phil St. Pierre and the American Yearbook Compa- ny, our publishers, and Carol Studios, our photographers. In addition, we would like to extend our warmest thanks to all the stu- dents who contributed their time, effort, encouragement to the making of this year's yearbook. 223 “There are places I’ll remem- ber all my life, though some have changed. Some forever, not for better, some are gone, and some remain. All these places had their mean- ings, with lovers and friends, I still can recall. In my life, I’ve loved them all.”
