1971 Wing and Spur Westbury High School Westbury, New York Volume 24 Learning — the give and take of lines and signs, the art of communication. Our high school years have related lines to images to signs to life, ena- bling us to feel the growth of knowledge within us. Through motions of participation and ob- servation we have gained a well-rounded pre- spective of life. Our trials and errors, our achievements and losses, have all been gains, for they have directed us toward success and happi- ness — the substance of a fruitful life. 2 We've learned — reflecting upon yesterday, living for today in peace, building for tomorrow. Our thoughts are channeled toward victory, but only thru defeat can we know its glory. With each new day we grow. We absorb a little more of life thru sharing our own 6 We must walk the tightrope, striving to keep our balance — A time for work — A time for play. Close your eyes and remember the times we've shared . . . 8 . . . the smiles, tears, confusion, understanding, and love. 9 As thoughts still hang on yesterday STOP . . . Remember the signs, the moments, the drifting days . . . the lingering traces of high school life. 13 The lifetime we leave, we open to you to tread upon and travel through. 14 Table of Contents Dedication 16 Underclass 76 Events 18 Sports 98 Faculty 30 Seniors 124 Activities 52 Business 172 15 Dedication 20 Villagers spread the word. What's all the broomin' noise! Poor little flower girl gets big break sound familiar? The Westbury High School students presented this story in the smash musical My Fair Lady on March 20th 21st, 1970. Brilliant performances were delivered by Nancy Rue- ger as Eliza Doolittle; Michael Cohen as Henry Higgins; Robert Cohen portraying Alfred Doolittle; and Michael Wil- liams as Freddy Eynsford-Hill. Cooperation from Mr. Kupferberg and the orchestra, the art department, Frank's Pizza, and many others; and the fine direction of Mr. Charles Russell, helped make the play the huge success it was. I just think it's a wonderful idea that's what I think! On the evenings of January 29 and 30, the class of 1971, produced Auntie Maine. Having to overcome numerous obstacles and delays, the production was quite successful. The play's content was a bit contro- versial due to the many ''taboo” words, and certain events involving an unwed mother. The title role of Auntie Marne was well portrayed by Carol Pazant. Special thanks were well deserved by those behind the scenes for their fine efforts. Introducing Carol Pazant as Auntie Mame. I Japanese! 23 RING DANCE — Astrology and Fun. Who the — put ice down my back?” 24 Class advisors, Mrs. Policastro and Mr. Russell, prepare for the ring ceremony One-two-cha-cha-cha. I'll ask Gail if you ask Carolyn. The Junior Prom of 1970 centered around the signs of the heavens, transforming the high school lobby into a sparkling array of stars, moon, and zodiac symbols. Each person received his horoscope for the evening and danced to the spaced out music of the Electric Soul Chase. Towards the end of the night, the traditional ring cere- mony began. This year, the juniors had their choice of green or gold stones, buffed or faceted, plus one of two dragon signets inserted under the stone. Mr. Kulchin presented the first ring to the class president, Cheri DeBellis, followed by the other officers and anxious juniors. In spite of the variety offered, the meaning of the high school ring remains the same. It represents a bond formed by four years of learning and sharing at West- bury High School. It is a symbol of loyalty and a sign of growth and maturity. Our rings are worn with pride and will bring us many happy memories in the years to come. The induction dinner began a new tradition in Westbu- ry High. The dinner presented the families of the stu- dents with a chance to witness the inductions. A tutoring program was provided for those students who felt they needed extra help in certain subjects. The main event was the College Night which was held in November. Over fifty colleges were represented and students attended from several local schools. 57 TOP: R. Gibralter, A. Giblin, A. Smetana, W. Levenberg, C. Cahn, L. Levi, K. Auster, M. Fireman, W. Harwin. Fasano. 102 Coach Tom Nunziata, voted Coach of the Year by his fellow men- tors in the division, brought this season's gridders to a 6-2 record, good enough for a third place finish in Division III. Under the new post-season play-off setup, the Dragons won both contests which made them the best third place team in their section of the country. Westbury football teams are usually strong defensive squads and this year's team was no exception. Linebacker Ed Levine and de- fensive end Jimmy Prewitt sparked a defense that gave up only three touchdowns in its last five games while shutting out two opponents. One basic element in the gridders' success was an outstanding offensive line. Line Coach John Fasano deserves much of the cred- it and Senior tackle Jerry Alaia was one of his best. Paul Napper, Beotis Carlisle, and Leon Sutton produced a strong running at- tack, highlighted by Napper's 161 yard performance against Val- ley Stream North. Junior quarterback Billy Allegra completed numberous passes to pass-catchers Alan Schur, Paul Rex, and Ronnie Bates. Seniors Jimmy Prewitt and Paul Napper and Juniors Alan Schur and Beotis Carlisle were all named to the All-Division team. Both Prewitt and Napper were further honored by making All-North Shore. Junior Alan Morton and Sophomore James McAnulty train hard for an upcoming meet. CROSS COUNTRY Harriers — a year of rebuilding. Hundered by inexperience. Coach Jan Wilgenkamp's Cross Coun- try Team compiled a disappointing 1-5 record. James Sharkey will be the lone harrier list to graduation and the team should be strong next season. Sophomore Lorn Moon attempts a shot on goal. The 1970 hooters had a very successful season, finishing 3rd in division III with a 10-3-1 record. Despite scoring a total of 34 goals to their opponet's 9, the soccermen narrowly missed a playoff berth. The squad was marked by a con- siderably large number of sophomores and Coach John Hotchkiss may be de- veloping a championship-caliber team during the next 2 years. Joe and Camille Iadevaia combined to score 20 times, and Joe Iadevaia, despite missing 3 games, tallied 3 goals in a single contest three times. A considerable amount of dragon offense was supplied by wing Gary Franklin an all-Division selection. Center-halfback Mike Pascarella, the other- all-division choice, led a stingy Westbury defense that shut out rivals in 7 of the 14 games. Ken Krech and Ken Auster shared the goalie spot. Two extremely talented sophomores, Lorn Moon and Danny Smith, helped make the defense one of the ruggedest in the country. One notable accomplishment of the booters was defeating arch-rival Glen Cove twice. After winning 8 of its last 9 games. Coach Hotchkiss might have enough momentum to win a division title next season. VARSITY TENNIS: TOP: G. Greenberg, R. Gibralter, B. Shugoll, Coach Michael Fiedler, H. Seltzer, G. Simon, P. The netmen finished the season with an 8-2 record, behind the fine coaching of Mr. Mike Fiedler. Junior sensation David Small strains to aceopponent. The standouts for Westbury were its first four singles players; David Small, Harry Seltzer, Richard Heckler, and Bobby Shu- goll, paced the dragon attack throughout the season. The doubles teams were very versatile. The mainstays of the doubles teams were: Robert Gibralter and George Greenberg, Paul Schertz and Joel Adler, and Glenn Simon and Paul Shein- heit. Rounding out the team were Billy DeBear, Bobby Cohen, Lenny Shulman, Lester Rodes, Tony Murro, and Tommy Unger. Placing second in Division III behind Roslyn, Westbury ob- tained a playoff spot for the 4th consecutive year. Led by senior Paul Napper and junior Lenny Kendall, both of whom were selected to the All-Division Three team, Westbury finished 11-8 overall. Leon Sutton, Wal- ter Ebron, and Alan Schur rounded out the starting five. The squad got off to a slow start, dropping its first three games, including a five-point loss to Maria Regina and a last-minute two-point loss to LI Lutheran, two of the top teams in Nassau. The Dragons then started winning — capturing the Christmas Tournament at New Hyde Park. All hopes for a division championship were ended when we faced Plainview-Kennedy in a do-or-die battle which resulted in a 58-55 Dragon defeat. Finishing in second, the Green and Gold entered the county playoffs, facing MacArthur in the first round. The Dragons were defeated, 70-61, and the season and all hopes for a county championship, had abruptly ended. Ill JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL: TOP: J. Rawlings, C. Williams. M. Gillum, B. Anastacie, M. With a newly innovated type of schedule, the team participated in no dual or regular season meets and went directly into the Division III Championships. In contrast to previous years, the strength of this squad was in the short distance runs, rather than in the field events. Miler Nick Papain, established himself as one of the best in the county by winning the Port Washington Invitational, in a school record of 4:26.7. Vincent Trice and Lenny Watson were strong in the 100 yard dash, as was Mike Propper, in the 440. Ken Buddington dominated both the 120 and 180 yard hurdles. In the field events, Jasper Andrews and Buddington consistently won the high jump, and placed first and second respectively in the Port Invitation- al. The varsity baseball team ended its 1970 season with a disappointing record of 5 wins and 11 defeats. The dia- mondmen, under the coaching of Mr. Michael Fiedler, had a strong defensive infield with George Heron at third, All-Division Scot Norris at short, Bobby Katz at second, and Jeff Shoobs at first. The outfield was shared by Sophomore Paul Rex, and seniors Danny McKillen, Mike Neway, and All-Division Honorable Mention Tom Dona- hue, when he wasn't pitching. Westbury dropped two games to Roslyn, but further into the season the team picked itself up with two strong wins over Plainview-Kennedy. After these two wins, the team went into a slump, from which it never recovered until the last few games of the season. Senior hurler Tom Donohue giving his all. 117 Intramurals The intramural program in Westbury High School, under the direction of Mr. Louis Botwin and Mr. Albert Handy is one of the finest and most organized of any high school on Long Island. The program is broken up into three units; Fall, Winter and Spring, and a great variety of athletics is available for non- varsity participants. In the fall, boys participate in tennis, pad- dle ball, soccer, and football. In the winter: volleyball and bas- ketball, and in the spring: softball. Each sport has individual or league competition; the leagues with the names N.I.L. (A League) and A.I.L. (B' League). The seasons are very exciting, culminating with a playoff program at the end of each sport. The boys exemplify good sportsmanship while developing their athletic abilities, and most of all enjoy these sports just for the desire to participate, rather than for pure glory. 118 G.A.A. — competition, cooperation and friendship. Two tennis players with gutless raquettes, we've nothing to say. Except about football (we nod in the bleachers) Or the Scholastic Aptitude Test. With such a small past behind you, you talk of future, of college, your career. A high school teacher? — not here, I hope, I joke. He shifts weight leg to leg.
