Text from Pages 1 - 232 of the 1969 volume:

2 You have to take the road seriously even if it promises only perspec- tive. Seasons change with the scenery weaving time in a tapestry. Won't you stop and remember me? There are roaring rivers to be crossed and bridges to build and wild oats to sow as you grow. As naturally as the brown edged leaves are blown from the trees, we too must free ourselves from familiarity and accept the challenge of the unknown. 12 When you are old and grey and full of sleep and nodding by 14 the fire take down this book and slowly read... Dedication Events Faculty and Curriculum Activities Underclassmen Sports Seniors Business 16 18 30 58 86 114 142 190 15 Dedication Complete devotion toward one’s profession and pride in one’s work are two of the finest attributes that a person can possess. It is. indeed, rare to find these two traits in an individual. It is a person of great wisdom who possesses them in abundance. The ability to motivate and stimulate interest in a subject does not come easily. Rather, it requires discipline, dedica- tion. integrity, and a tireless effort. Most of all. it requires a scholarly mastery of his field. This teacher possesses this scholarship in rich abundance. He daily imparts his words of wisdom which include the following: “I think, therefore I am. ’You are what you are because of what you have.” and ‘‘Science has fulfilled her purpose when she has ascertained and enunciated the truth.” During his years of association with Westbury High School, he has earned the respect of many students. Many of his former students return to visit him year after year to ex- press their gratitude for the college level preparation which he has given them. In addition, he is a profound source of inspiration to our daily lives through his good example, his integrity, and his supreme devotion to duty. Year after year his students of Biology consistently score well above the norm on the Regents and on the College Boards. It is with honor and pride that we dedicate the 1969 Wing and Spur to you. Fifty-one years of dedicated service Mr. Sal Eannaccone It is a rare privilege to pay honored tribute to a man for a half century of dedicated service. We, the staff of the 1969 Wing and Spur, are so honored to pay this tribute to Mr. Sal Eannaccone. Mr. Eannaccone is loved and well remembered by many of our parents and by many of the members of our com- munity. He vividly remembers the days when the Westbury Schools consisted of four buildings with a total enrollment of four hundred students. With the tremendous growth of our schools, we are not all privileged to know this man. However, as we look around our fields and building we can truly appreciate the work and dedication of Mr. Eannaccone and his custodial staff. Whether it be shoveling snow at five o’clock on a winter morning or caring for our football field, he can always be seen doing his work in a cheerful manner. In this day and age when so few of us seem to have a minute , Mr. Eannac- cone is always there with a cheerful assist. We, the staff of the 1969 Wing and Spur, are proud to pay this small tribute to a wonderful man. We are proud and grateful to have Mr. Eannaccone to care for our school. Coached by Mr. Tom Nunziata. the team swept to its fourth straight Division III football title—a North Shore Athletic League record. The powerful football Dragons overwhelmed their first five Division III opponents with a strong defense led by captains Tim Garland and Jack Goode. Mike Patti, who threw 12 touch- down passes, quarterbacked the most balanced offense of recent Dragon teams. Bruce Ball, the team's leading ground gainer, and Richard Kaplun provided a powerful running attack while Scott Norris, Sal lanucci and Joe Daddio were capable receivers. The sixth, and last, league game pitted unde- feated Westbury against Island Trees with the division championship at stake. Ball's 84 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half inspired the Dragons to a 19—13 victory. Defensive linemen Larry Petrucco and Steve Stein overtake a Roslyn ballcarrier. The Dragons, seeking an undefeated season, lost star quarterback Mike Patti when he was injured on the first play from scrimmage. Joe Daddio did his best trying to fill in for the injured Patti, but it wasn’t enough. Massapequa broke the game open early in the second half and went on to win decisively 33—6. Bruce Ball and Tim Garland, both named to Newsday's All-North Shore team, led a parade of eight Dragons re- ceiving post-season recognition. Joe Daddio, Steve Stein, Jack Goode, and Mike Patti made the All-Division team with Jerry Abbatiello and Scott Norris gaining honorable mention. Under his leadership the hooters challenged perenniel Division III power Glen Cove for champion- ship honors. Midway through the season the Dragons held first place by a slim one point margin over Glen Cove with Roslyn a close third. Misfortune struck the Dragons as the sec- ond half of the season started, when high scoring forward Joe ladevia suffered a serious injury and was lost for the season. With ladevia out, the Westbury scoring punch suffered. In the latter half of the season the Dragon booters lost crucial games to Glen Cove and Roslyn due to an inability to score. These losses resulted in a disappointing third place finish for Westbury. The Dragon’s outstanding goalie John Ingram, along with sophomore star Joe ladevia, junior Nick Buffalino and senior Tony Poscillico were names to the Division III all-star squad. Bob Katz, a junior, finished the season undefeated while playing out of the number two single spot. Lenny Moskowitz was the netmen's number one single player and compiled a fine 8—3 record. Senior Donnie Ber- man (9—2) and junior Ricky Kaufman (6—5) rounded out Westbury's single participants. Lloyd Lense and Arthur Kirsch led four strong doubles contingents. Leading a talented team was senior Steve Pron- iewych. Proniewych compiled four wins as a pitcher and led the team in hitting with a .475 average. Adding to the potent Dragon attack was catcher Tony Buffalino, Rich Kaplun, Joe Carbone, Joe Dad- dio, Tim Garland, and infield captain Ken Thall. Kaplun, Carbone, and Proniewych contributed num- erous key hits, leading the team in runs batted in. The pitching staff was led by Vinnie Machynsky. Machynsky won six games and compiled three shut- outs—best on the staff in both departments. Behind him were Proniewych, John Barbati, and Tommy Donohue. Pat Piscitelli and Joe Carbone provided a more than capable relief corps. The Dragons' post-season activity was brief, bowing in a first round playoff game to MacArthur High School. MacArthur stopped Westbury with three runs in two innings. A last inning Dragon rally fell short but displayed the fighting spirit symbolic of the 1968 team. Please excuse my son ... 189 The Think Drink In Loving Memory of Mr. John Greenwood Business Manager Westbury Public Schools 1962-1968 Although he was not well known by many students, we all appre- ciated Mr. Greenwood because it was he, in his position as Business Manager, who took care of all of our material needs. Our food, buses, uniforms, classroom supplies, and textbooks were all secured through his office. Despite the size and complexity of our school system, Mr. Greenwood, through the conscientious per- formance of his duties, made certain that all of our needs were satis- fied. He was taken from us very suddenly and we were all saddened and shocked. We express our deepest sympathy to Mrs. Greenwood and the Greenwood family and ask that they receive inspiration during this crisis. May he rest in peace. Mr. Harris was first elected to our Board of Education in May 1967. He served us in this capacity until his death in December, 1968. During the period of his Board membership, Mr. Harris was very in- strumental in the struggle to integrate all of our schools and to promote racial harmony. We will all miss him and we thank him for the many contributions which he made to our education. We wish to express our sympathy to Mrs. Harris and the Harris family. May he rest in peace. BURKE PRCSIDCNT Lincoln Savings Bank FOUNDED 1866 BROADWAY AND BOERUM STREET BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 11206 TEL. 212 782-6000 Dear Graduate: Graduation is a most important time in any family's life. A time to reflect about the many good things that have happened in the last four years ... and a time to think about the years ahead. I am certain that you have considered furthering your education, either in college or in the many fine trade or nursing schools which are available. Perhaps you have already made a decision ... we hope it was to continue your education. Now here's how we can help.1 Under a cooperative arrangement with the New York Higher Education Assistance Corporation you may borrow from $1,000. to $1,500. a year with a maximum of $7,500. for attending college ... lesser amounts for trade schools. You make no payments and there are no interest charges while you are in school. Upon termination of studies you can take up to ten years to repay. Loans are made directly to the student ... no co-signers are needed. Dial either telephone number listed below for additional information. May we take this occasion to congratulate you on your graduation and to wish you a successful and rewarding future. Cordially, Michael .
