To be wise is the highest aim of man. is the most exalted achievement of human self- determination. To educate one's self and others, with consciousness, freedom, and self-determination, is a two-fold achievement of wisdom . . .1 The outstanding and dedicated teacher must be concerned with more than the immediate success of his students. He must gam an insight into the future which does not come easily. The acquisition of such insight requires dedication and tireless effort. A teacher's day never formally ends. This is certainly true in the case of this teacher to whom we. the staff of the 1968 Wing and Spur, are honored and deeply gratified to dedicate this volume. During his years of association with Westbury High School, he has earned the respect of students and faculty alike. His humor and warm smile are a constant source of inspiration to his students. As a result of his excellent instruction, his students have always scored well above average in state and national Mathematics competition. The Mathletes have also performed well in competition with Mathematics Clubs throughout Nassau County. It is with honor and pride that we dedicate the 1968 Wing and Spur to you. Mr. Anthony Moreno. iFriedrich Froebel. The Education of Man. International Education Series. Vol. V. (New York. D. Appleton. 1896). pp. 1-5. 4

A pattern is a consistent arrangement of qualities. Throughout time, the designs found in man and nature are repeated to form the endless dupli- cation of the universe. The soul of man is patterned after the admirable qualities of the past and the anticipated needs of the future. Nature recre- ates what she herself has destroyed, modifying the pattern only slightly to produce progress: that which is essentially good is reproduced, inge- nuity is but variation on a theme. It is that variance, however, which man has long sought to nurture and ysultivate through education. Our years here at Westbury High have been Sn attempt to foster growth and maturity. By weaving our own ideas to the facts inherited by our teachers, we enlarge the arrangement of qualities, thus strengthening the over-all pattern of life. 3-
