1968 Wing and Spur West bury High School West bury. New York Volume 21 John W. Kick ham. Principal Published by the editors A pattern is a consistent arrangement of qualities. Throughout time, the designs found in man and nature are repeated to form the endless dupli- cation of the universe. The soul of man is patterned after the admirable qualities of the past and the anticipated needs of the future. Nature recre- ates what she herself has destroyed, modifying the pattern only slightly to produce progress: that which is essentially good is reproduced, inge- nuity is but variation on a theme. It is that variance, however, which man has long sought to nurture and ysultivate through education. Our years here at Westbury High have been Sn attempt to foster growth and maturity. By weaving our own ideas to the facts inherited by our teachers, we enlarge the arrangement of qualities, thus strengthening the over-all pattern of life. 3- To be wise is the highest aim of man. is the most exalted achievement of human self- determination. To educate one's self and others, with consciousness, freedom, and self-determination, is a two-fold achievement of wisdom . . .1 The outstanding and dedicated teacher must be concerned with more than the immediate success of his students. He must gam an insight into the future which does not come easily. The acquisition of such insight requires dedication and tireless effort. A teacher's day never formally ends. This is certainly true in the case of this teacher to whom we. the staff of the 1968 Wing and Spur, are honored and deeply gratified to dedicate this volume. During his years of association with Westbury High School, he has earned the respect of students and faculty alike. His humor and warm smile are a constant source of inspiration to his students. As a result of his excellent instruction, his students have always scored well above average in state and national Mathematics competition. The Mathletes have also performed well in competition with Mathematics Clubs throughout Nassau County. It is with honor and pride that we dedicate the 1968 Wing and Spur to you. Mr. Anthony Moreno. iFriedrich Froebel. The Education of Man. International Education Series. Vol. V. (New York. D. Appleton. 1896). pp. 1-5. 4 Life is sequential time. Our years at school are a part of that sequence. 6 We move at signals. Our minds are attuned to stopping and going, yet whether we stop or go, we progress. We mature solely by recognizing the pre- arranged signs of growth. 7 School interlocks our thoughts with our surroundings. It is an impetus for the mind's sequence: ego— curiosity— understanding. 9 10 The learning process is partially suspended as social activities assume precedence. Yet social contacts continue the sequence of mind enrichment. 12 We learn, we love, we live. In knowledge there is power; and the sequence continues. Faculty and Curriculum Few in number, yet infinite in the high quality of the precepts they instill, the faculty plays a significant role in the woven pattern of learning. In their first league encounter the Dragons were the underdogs to powerful North Shore, but a strong defense and the running of Steve Proniewych came through to give Westbury a 20—7 victory. Steve scored on runs of 55 and 45 yards. After a 27—14 victory over Roslyn the Dragons had a big let down against Glen Cove as they lost 12—0. But against Plainview they roared back swamping the Gulls 40—6 in their finest perform- ance of the season. The next week Division Avenue came to Westbury and with Proniewych out. a Division victory seemed imminent. But Bruce Ball scampered 55 yards for a first half score giving the defense all the points it needed. The Dragons went on to win 12—0. The team finished the sea- son with a respectable, but disappointing. 4—4 league record. Only captain Lew Kostiner and playmaking forward Frank Buffalino returned from last year's starting team. Sophomores John Moon, Joe Piante, and Nick Buffalino and juniors Barry Schuster. Chris Schellhorn, Larry DeLorenzo, Tony Possilico, and Gus Mirich rounded out the starting squad. Mike Molloy, John Ingram, and Don Cambridge rotated at the goalie position and allowed an average of 1.1 goals per game. The capable substitutes include John Vinas and Dennis Flynn on defense and Mark Smith and Alan Dawkins on the forward line. The team’s inexperience was evident in early games, as many games were lost by only one goal. However, as the season progressed, the players gained needed experience and finished strongly with a four game winning streak. FRONT: J. Shulman. J. Ross. P. Perl. BACK: S. Bell; mgr.. J. Cody. R. The West- bury harriers, perenially a Cross Country power, finished in a dismal fifth position with a 1—7 record. John Applewhaite and Ray Elliot were the only seniors on a team dominated by under- classmen. Two surprises of this year were the development of sophomores Ken Franklin and Kevin Willis. Don Lewis, Bill Stewart and Joel Ross, juniors Richie Kaplun, and Gordon Roe and sophomores, Dennis DuVal and Scott Norris, the team overwhelmed most of their league op- ponents. Robinson was the key man for the Westbury attack as he averaged twenty points per game and usually dominated the boards. The second leading scorer for the Dragons was Soph Dennis DuVal who also was a phenomenal ball-handler as he guided the Westbury offense. Lewis, Kaplun and Roe rotated in the forward spots while Stewart and Ross filled out the backcourt. The season started slowly as Westbury dropped its first four games (non leaguers) with Robinson out of the line-up. Upon the return of Robinson a swift change came over the Dragons. They seemed a completely different team as they swept through the remainder of the schedule at an 11—3 clip. In the play-offs, Westbury took the North Shore Crown and lost to Lawrence in the county Finals. It was the first time in twenty years that the Dragons went so far. The veteran Westbury wrestling team put together another fine season. They com- piled a 5—3 league record and were 9—4 — 1 overall, and finished third in the division. The standout wrestlers for Westbury were Moses Ebron and Charlie Lyons, both of whom went through the season undefeated. Fred Schwartz, Sande Caplin, and Charlie McGhee were also outstanding. The big surprise of the season was Anthony Buffalino in the 157 lb. class. In his first year on the squad he won 8 bouts and proved himself a top wrestler when he captured fourth place in the North Shore Championships. Fred Schwartz excelled as a clutch perfor- mer when he captured the third spot in the tourney at 130 lbs. Lyons was second on the North Shore and fourth in the county despite a severe head injury which forced him to forfeit the North Shore title bout and lose his semi-final match in the counties. But he still placed higher than any other Dragon. Prospects for next season look excellent as many lettermen are returning. Breaking down his man for two points is Charles McGhee. 132 Westbury Opponent 22 Hicksville 22 22 Locust Valley 23 24 Glen Cove 21 27 Floral Park 15 44 Roslyn 8 28 Carle Place 18 18 Levittown Div. 25 29 Manhasset 16 23 North Shore 25 33 Wheatly 17 29 Garden City 17 18 Island Trees 33 55 Plainview 5 32 Jericho 14 A reversal is a sure two points for Sande Caplin. The Sea Dragons experienced a very disappoint- ing season as illness, bad breaks and injuries turned pre-season optimism into post-season gloom. John Erickson and Joe Carbone were stand- outs throughout the season, as each man usually won two events per meet while breaking various pool and school records. Dennis Younghams was also a consistent scorer. Despite the disappointing team performance, many individual school records were broken. These in- clude Vincent Machynski's diving records which placed him sixth in the county. Dennis Younghams was seventh in the County in the back stroke. John Erickson placed third in the County in both the 100 yard butterfly and 400 yard free style—and. Joe Carbone took a second in the County's 50 yard free style and a third in the 100 yard free style. FRONT: J. Coll. E. Dadario. E. Raphael. A. Prince. R. Henry. V. Machynski. The 1967 Dragon Baseball team was one of the best in recent Westbury history. The dia- mondmen finished third in Division III compe- tition just one game out of a playoff berth. Many outstanding players formed the squad, among them shortstop Gary Scott, whose .475 batting average and near perfect fielding percentage earned him a spot on the All- Long Island team. Outfielder Ed Farkas made the All-North Shore team with a hefty .400 average, as did ace pitcher Ron Newman who had a near perfect pitching record including a three-hitter and two shut-outs. Speed was a major factor in Westbury’s play and Speedy Al Collins stole eight bases and had many extra base hits including three home runs. Sophomore Richie Kaplun, and Junior Ken Thall also provided offensive power that con- tributed much to the Westbury game. The Dragon pitching staff was one of the tops in the Division. Besides Newman, the other pitchers were southpaw Steve Pronie- wych. ace reliever Pat Piscitelli, and senior Steven Augenstein. Proniewych picked up three victories and Piscitelli recorded sev- eral saves. Behind the plate were Tony Buf- falino, Joe Daddio, Joe Carbone, and Jimmy Simeone, a quartet that provided top hitting power and excellent control. Belting an extra-base hit is slugger Al Collins. In addition to extending its winning streak to five years and thirty league wins, the Dragons captured six invitational meets. Consistent winners all season long were seniors Kevin James. Jon Brower, William Penn. Ron Furcht. Pete Bould, and Jay Buongiavanni, and juniors Rich White. Don Cockeran, Sam Jenkins and Mario Zaino. The year’s highlights included first place in the North Shore Relays, first place, with a record 67 1 2 points, in the Port Washington Invitation, first place, for the sec- ond year in a row. in the Englewood, New Jersey Invi- tation, first place for the second year in a row, in the North Shore Championships, and a repeat triumph for the Section Eight track title. Jon Brower (13’ 6 in the pole vault) and Rich White (6’ 3 3 4 in the high jump) set county records, as Westbury amassed 32 points to clearly outdistance its nearest rival. 139 Amid cheers from the Westbury crowd. A time to reflect about the many good things that have happened in the last four years ... and a time to think about the years ahead. I am certain that you have considered furthering your education, either in college or in the many fine trade or nursing schools which are available. Perhaps you have already made a decision ... we hope it was to continue your education 4 Now here's how we can help! Under a cooperative arrangement with the New York Higher Education Assistance Corporation you may borrow from $1,000. to $1,500. a year with a maximum of $7,500. for attending college ... lesser amounts for trade schools. You make no payments and there are no interest charges while you are in school. Upon termination of studies you can take up to ten years to repay.
