Four years ago, the class of '55 entered the hal- lowed halls of Westbury Hugh School a congregation of nervous apprehensive freshmen Only 127 of us including welcome additions from other schools sur vnved the sling and arrows of outrageous fortune Regents Exams and football rallies Here rs our story As freshmen we were unorgamzed in our misery because this was the last year of active imtlatlons The girls were resplendent in their flowing pigtarls with multicolored ribbons We did our best to avoid the seniors but seldom succeeded We freshmen may have been bruised bothered and bewildered but we were clean Many an unsuspectmg urchm was thrown without mercy into the showers rn anything but a dell cate manner While freshman some of our more musically mclmed friends Including Monroe Flood Allan Person Peter Herdtmann Den ms Backus and Ronald Cata pano became band members and remained as such through out their four years Now at last we were Soph omores and could breathe easily once more This year ilu wi as of this writing a seven letter man, were elected Rifle Club president and range officer respectively and were to remam as such for three years All in all it was a good year for sophomores and we bemg a good vintage had quite a time of It As we look back on those wonderful days one thing stands out In our minds Room l2l will never forget when Raymond Reardon was elected its president Peter Heldtmann did such a good 'ob as vice pres: dent that we promoted him to the presidency Doris Gore became vlce president whrle we kept Linda Val secchl and Amelia Stellato as secretary and treasurer respectively This was our lumor year Honor Society mductrons were quite an event this year as many of us were made members Among those so honored were Laura Tedeschi president Denms Backus vice pres: dent Pat Reilly secretary Marcia Sheehan treasurer and Doris Gore Joan Arcarl John Barone Peter Heldt mann and Jerry Van der Eynden The lunlor year addition to Pl the cheerleading squad was Y Dianne Welch To assure domestic tran G36 , we organized and about time Moe Dyckman was elected mann veep Linda Valsecchl secretary and Dee Dee Stel lato treasurer Tom Carolan lovingly known to us all as Tish was elected secretary treasurer of the Student Association That year each homeroom chose a delegate to represent the class ln choosing cheerleaders We were given ballots and the candidates did their stuff Barbara Keown Priscilla Gray and Carol Russell were elected and did a fine 'ob for the team Not bemg used to such good government our class meetings were not always fine examples of parlla mentary procedure If we had discovered points of order back then nothing would have been done but Senate investigations had not replaced soap opera as yet Beany Catapano made the all scholastic soccer team and Mike Stellato won the Kiwanis baseball tro phy As sophomores Dems Backus and Bill Lascelles ?lk'F l W :,2 4 quality promote the general welfare and lust plam make flag drives For a few weeks beanies were the rage rn W H S and no self respecting student would be caught even slightly suck without one The newly formed gals rifle team under the able captamcy of Marcia Sheehan won first place in the Long Island Sectional Meet of the National Rifle Asso cltlon Along with Captain Sheehan the members were Phylrs Long Virginia Backus and Carol Warden West bury s answer to Annie Oakley who won the gurls sec tion championship The boys had to content themselves with second place This year we had our Jumor Prom and bemg lumors at the time this was quite logical The theme was Stairway to the Stars and the gym was resplendent in both stars and a stairway no less The music was provided by The Rhythm Kings and all who attended had a wonderful time Certainly one of the greatest privileges that can .J I I I ' I ' D l . , ' I I I I ' ' I , . . , Q I I I ' , .
