Mabel Stewart , who has devoted her life to being an inspira- tion to her students. Our wonderful association with her will long be rem- ClbO1'Qdc 4 v , Q WNW, My heartiest congratulxdnn and best wishes for the future to every grad- uate! Your success will be tempered by the thought expressed in these words of an unknown author:WThe most powerful things in the world are in- visible---honor, character, love, electricity, and your power to visu- alize and make dreams come true.u Carl S. Ingebrigtson Superintendent Board of Education The authority for establishing the policies of the school rests with the Board of Education. They de- termine the financial and educa- tional needs, and provide facili- ties for the school. Election to the board is an honor and a major responsibility. They serve without pay, hold regular monthly meetings, and also special meetings Whenever the need arises. Two of the most important items of busin ss confronting the board during the schodlyear are the hir- ing of the faculty and other school employees, and levying the taxes that operate the school. Ed. Kleven, Francis Anderson, T.V. Peterson, Clifford Peterson, Oliver Kleven, Carl Ingebrigtson, Ancil Budolfeon. 6 It is our sincere hope that you, the members of the class of 1955, have acquired throughout your high school years the desire to continuously broaden your spheres of knowledge. May you always use this knowledge to sense the values in life that will enable you and your society ever to reach greater satisfacdnns and high- er levels of living. May you always realize that knowledge is so essen- tial to living in a democracy, and that you are the leaders in its perpetuation. Best wishes for a full and happy life, a life of service and acc om- plishment. Charles R. McCoy Principal Student Council The Student Council was organized to promote the general welfare of' the school, and to create closer co-operation between the students and the faculty. Our purpose is to promote and maintain school spirit, and to plan and carry on the student activities, one of which was an all school party. Homecoming The l9Sb Homecoming will long be remembered by both students and alumni of Westbrook High School. The afternoon parade, an attrac- tion added to the Homecoming fes- tivities this past year, included the band, queen candidates, attend- ants, grade and club floats, the football team, and grade bicycle units. Because of rain, the traditional snake dance scheduled for Thursday evening was cancelled and a pep h t was held in the gym. The highlight of the 'Sh Home- coming was the crowning of Queen Eunice Keller, who was chosen by the student body from a field of five senior girls. Queen Eunice was crowned during the half-time ceremonies of the Westbrook-Comfrey game by co-captains Jim Dibble and Leo Wilson. The High School Mixed Chorus is composed of 65 selected singers. Those students interested in vocal music are given tryouts to choose those who best fulfill the requirements of tone, pitch, rhythm, and sight-reading ability. Rehearsals are held two hours every week. At these rehearsals attempts are made to unify sections, develop a better tone quality, and to learn new selections. Com ositions studied this year include works by F. Melius Christiansen, Bach, Fred Waring, and several contemporary composers. Several novelty numbers are also re- hearsed. The Chorus gives a Christmas concert, spring concert, and participates in the annual district 7 music festival. Ex- change concerts with neighboring schools are also a part of the busy music schedule. Mixed Chorus at work! Boys' Quartette Gary Nelsen, Ronald Hubin, Jon Rongstad, and Arlo Gertner. 38 Row 1: D. The Girls' Chorus is heard at the same concerts as Mixed Chorus. The Boys' Chorus provides all boys an opportunity to sing selections written only for male groups. Among these are many negro spiritualq sea shantys, and m of the popular hits. To run off a bit of musical en- a 65 voice choir is formed. This any thusiasm in the Junior High, beginning in choral singing assists in the development of in- dividuals who will later become the vocalists in the High School Choir. 39 Girls' Sextette Adele Hanson, DeLores Budolfson, Judy Carlson, Lora Lou Peterson, Dixie Severson, Arlene Vosberg. Only a hard-fought ballgame with Walnut Grove stop- ped the Wildcats after a five straight win. They didn't seem to have much trouble winning Us remain- ing games with the well-balanced andorganizedback- field and line. The Wildcats elected Leo Wilson and James Dibble as co-captains. Wilson, Dibble, and Norstegard were placed on the All-Conference Team. The lettermen for the year were: Seniors: Leo Wilson, James Dibble, Myron Barrie, Orland Norste- gard, Errol Villa, Fredric Lindall, Luverne Grams, Richard Taarud, and Gary Nelsen. Juniors: Jon Rong- stad, Dean Knudson, Stanley Roll, Ronald Christian- son, and Gilmore Peterson. Sophomores: Ronald Mor- ton. The team ended a very successful season with six wins and one loss, out-scoring their opponents l56 to 89. Much credit should go to the coaches, Hr. Jacobson and Mr. Klassen, for a job well-done. They led a team through a season both school and com- munity can be proud of. 48 Jr. High Football Squad Row 1: R. Nelson, L. Franz, R. Lein, T. Patterson, D. Zinda, L. Johnson,'C. Patterson, F. Varsity Basketball The Wildcats started fall practice with five returning lettermen, which showed possibilities for a good season. The Wildcats lost two ballgames in conference play, both to Storden which caused a two-way tie for the North Sub-Dist- rict title. An extra game was played at Jeffers, that found the Wildcats conference champs, downing Storden 62 to h8. Westbrook then advanced to District play. The Wildcats won the opener from Brewster S8 to 35 in a rather one-sided game. Knudson sank 18 and Dibble lh to lead the scoring for both teams. The second game found Westbrook losing to Windom 60 to 52. It was a close game all the way and one of the best def- fensive games of the year. The Wildcats lead at the first quarter mark, and only down by three at the half, and two at third quarter. Knudson and Dibble lead with 21 and 13 respec- tively. The season's record was fair--winning seven and losing tan Knudson lead in scoring over the season with 299 points, Nel- sen with 2hl, and Dibble with 2lh. The highest scoring ballgame was played against Butter- field. The Wildcats had a field day winning 8h to 73. It was one of the fastest ballgames of the season. The Wildcats looked their sharpest in many years. New warm-up pants, jerseys and uniforms were addedin the athletic department this year. Thanks go to the coaches, Jacobson and Klassen, andmmnagen Bob Barrie. Also to all the fans who showed good sportsmandnp and support. 513 E ff A f . :Z f' -1, , 4 . - ' 1 QL 31 X.
