R0GER BAILEY Roger Bailey Roger Bailey has served Westbrook High School for 29 years as a teacher of social studies, as assistant principal, and as a guidance counselor. Whatever his role has been, his basic concern has been for his students. As a teacher, he sought to vary his classroom procedures to keep the students' interests and to assist students who were having difficulties with their work. He had high standards for his students and for himself and always gave a little extra. As a guidance counselor, he has been a strong student advocate, yet he has been insistent that students exert the best effort, accept the responsibility for their behavior, and look to the future. He has provided understanding, support, and assistance to all who have sought help. When he served as Assistant Principal, he participated in all phases of the school program even though the major aspects of his role were to take care of discrepancies in attendance and to handle discipline problems. He put the same wholehearted effort into the Assistant Principal role as he had in teaching and guidance, and he showed the same kind of concern for students. After several years in this tax- ing position he returned to his greater love, counseling students. Roger Bailey has served the Westbrook School System faithfully and well; he has directly or indirectly influenced the lives of hundreds of students, and has achieved a great deal of personal satisfaction in their successes. The students, administration, faculty, and staff wish Roger the best in his retirement and extend a profound and hearty thank you for all he has given us. 50 Front Row, L to R: Eugene Leighton, Scott Alley, Jeff Dunphe, Paul Black. My name is Tapio Saarelainen and I am an exchange student from Finland. I am staying at Norman and Reinette Walker’s, and they are VERY nice people. They have made my stay here possible, and I am very thankful to them about that and everything that they have done for me. I have met many interesting people during my stay here, and we have had a good time. It’s very interesting to change opinions and learn something new all the time. I have always admired the United States, and I admire it even more right now. I’m very happy I ended up here in Maine, too. People here have been very nice to me, and the nature is beautiful; just like in Finland. You have a very nice country, and the school system here is much better than ours. People are nice and friend- ly, too. So, you have very good reasons to be proud of your country!! Tapio Hi! My name is Magnus Peterson and I come from a city called Boras in Sweden. Sweden is a fairly small country with about 8 million citizens. Boras is a city with about 75,000 citizens and its major industry is mail order companies. I have a sister and a brother. My sister is 16 years old and her name is Sofie. My brother is 17 years old and his name is Mathias. I would like to say thank you to everybody that has helped me and especially to my host family. Magnus P.S. They wouldn’t let me have my briefcase with me in the picture. 81 Seniors Front Row, L to R: Daron Manoogian, John McCar- thy, Mike Richard, Patti Jensen, Cathy Arsenault, Kathy Gillis. McKinley to Prince William Sound. Visiting the Nazi extermination camp at Dachau outside Munich. To see the reality of what had only been words in books, to sec what man is capable of doing to his fellow man, is certainly memorable.” Ms. Worcester: “I was able to truly admire and appreciate the splendor and beauty of our country when I drove from the East to the West coast.” Ms. Locke: “Three months on my own in the Greek Islands.” Mr. Michaud: “High School and China.” Mr. Dawson: “The moment of birth of each of my children.” Miss Norwood: “My College years — I finally realized that all that ‘dumb junk’ told me by my parents and teachers in High School was ‘valuable information.’ Mr. Curran: “Life and waking up each day.” Anonymous: “There are so many — College, marriage, children, teaching, living, and travelling in various parts of the country — it’s all memorable! It is impossible to choose one! Mrs. Skillings: “I hope the most memorable time is still to come. A very special memory would be the surprise 25th wedding anniversary celebration our children gave us.” Mrs. Michaud-Bailey: “Being born? Fortune of being raised with 6 sisters and a good home with parents who cared and loved us. Getting married last year to a wonderful guy. Coaching and developing gymnastics at Westbrook High for the past 10 years. Having been blessed with 2 beautiful nephews — change from all girls. Mr. Walch: “The birth of my three children. Playing College football. Canoeing the Allagash River. Coaching wrestling for the past ten years.” Mrs. Wheeler: “When I went away to college and discovered I could make very adult decisions for which I could take total credit and for which I could accept total blame. Successful independent living gave me a lot of confidence and my initial college days were everything and more than I had ever expected.” Mr. Libby: “If I must pick one, it has to be the day I married my Queen, Juliette Libby. Now I ask you Ms. Sullivan, does this classify me as a male chauvinist?” Mr. Snow: “First trip to Europe.” Mr. Estabrook. “Favorable or Unfavorable? Since I enjoy each day. it is difficult to select one period of time. I thoroughly enjoyed the four years I was stationed in the Canal Zone — 1954-1958. Anonymous 2: Most memorable time has yet to occur. Ms. Wood: “There are too many to choose, but my most recent ‘memorable lime’ was last summer, seeing the West for the first time. A real thrill.” Mr. Bailey: “At each and every high school and college graduation, where I am able to reflect on the growth and maturity that has taken place in each of the graduates, over the period of time I have known them.” SENIOR FAVORITES I Favorite Color: Blue Average Height: w Average Weight: i39ibs.
