Must have a code. That you can live by. And so. Become yourself. Because the past. Is just a good-bye. Teach the children well. Their father’s hell. Did slowly go by. And feed them on your dreams. The one they fix. The one you’ll know by. Don’t you ever ask them why. If they told you you would cry. So just look at them and sigh. And you know they love you. A C U L And you, of tender years. Can’t know the fears. That your elders grew by. And so please help them. With your youth. They seek the truth. Before they can die. Teach the parents well. Their children’s hell. Will slowly go by. And feed them on your dreams. The one they fix. The one you'll know by. Don’t you ever ask they why. If they told you you would cry. So just look at them and sigh. And know they love you. Rita Rodgers Jane DeRoche Carl Knowlton Superintendant Richard Duntley Vocational Education A Richard Getchell, Principal Walter Hansen Assistant Principal Porting Is Such Sweet Sorrow. A college education professor once stated that the key to success in the day-to-day operations of a high school is the support staff — i.e., the secretaries and custodians. One skeptic who later had occasion to recall and evaluate that statement has now been able to see its merits. For the past 21 years, Margery Charleston has served as Secretary to the Principal, working with Mr. Robinson and Mr. Getchell. Marge has been a very efficient and dedicated employee. Rarely absent, she often has worked extra hours in order to get a job done, and frequently has worked weekends on bookkeeping and other tasks requiring concentration and quiet, always without additional compensation. Like most secretaries, she has endured the abuse of irate parents and students when they complain- ed about real or imagined offenses, and has suf- fered the anger of the staff when they disagreed with actions of the principal. She has produced countless volumes of letters, memos, and materials for a variety of staff members, has handled hun- dreds of thousands of dollars for the activities pro- grams, and has prepared diplomas for over 5000 students in her long service to the school. It is never an easy or popular task to be the person who must remind others about deadlines, school rules, procedures, and administrative fiats, but she has endured that task with dignity for many years. Able to do a high volume of work in a short period of time, she has been a valued employee and her loyalty, dedication and vast store of knowledge about the school and its constituents — present and past — will be irreplaceable. Her thoughtfulness and kindnesses, often unnoticed, are much appreciated. She, too, will be greatly missed. Best wishes, Marge. 50 Many, many young people who have chosen vocations in art related fields can trace the origins of their interest to ex- periences they have had in the Westbrook School System. All will tell you that their careers were shaped, supported, en- couraged, and fostered by Mrs. Hawkes. Jane, as she is affec- tionately known, has given countless numbers of students the skills and know-now to use their creative talents and the courage to pursue their interests. Popular and highly respected amon her peers, Jane has been the architect of the High School Art Program; her enthusiasm and dedication have made it suc- cessful. She is retiring this year to seize the opportunity to paint, relax, and enjoy her family. No greater tribute can be made to a teacher than a sincere statement, universally agreed to, that she will be greatly missed. Best wishes, Jane. Richard Getchell “Just a minute. I’ll look ‘Checking it twice' “You, in the back of the room ... f Surprise” ‘Count Your Blessings” “And you think you're going to gtaduate?? If you wait and just don’t want to smile If it takes just a little while; Open your eyes and look at the day You’ll see things in a different way. Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow. Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here It’ll be here, better than before Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone. Why not think about times to come I know all about the things you’ve done. If your life was lent to me Just think what tomorrow we’ll be. All I want is to see you smile If it takes just a little while I know you don’t believe that it’s true I never meant any harm to you. Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow. Don’t stop, it’ll soon be here It’ll be here, better than before Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone. My trip to America was sponsored by the exchange program Y.F.U., Youth for Understanding. I enjoy staying here very much. It’s quite different from Holland. I came to BIG America to see what makes it big; to learn and understand another culture; and to learn more about myself and other people. Although my disappoint- ments, doubts and funny English made it hard in the beginn- ing. I think I’ve found the answer: You are all terrific people! I had the opportunity to travel in November when I went with my sister, Ruth Barnes, to Maryland and Washington. I like participating in activities so I joined the Art and Spanish Club. I’m very thankful the school asked us (the ex- change students) to join the Student Council. I love the op- portunity to be involved in so many sports. I'm a junior here. I’ll be a sophomore when I go back to Holland. 1 have three more years before I graduate from school. My school is a college preparatory school called Gymnasium and it lasts for six years like your High School. A lot of funny things have happened here. People have asked if my village was near Amsterdam. “No, 1 said, it’s at the other end of the country.” Near which city they ask? Holland is a very small country so I end up telling them I live near Amsterdam. I want to thank all my friends, and teachers. Especially my school counselor, Mr. Segee. Also, I want to thank my family. Joyce and Allen Barnes. To my friends I think you’re all neat kids and I hope we'll get to know each other better. I want to thank you all very much. Lots of love and warm fuzzies, Janneke Hej! My name if Per Rotzius and I’m from Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city. Malmo is situated in the southern-most part of Sweden. The organization that sponsored my trip to America is called EF, the Educational Foundation for Foreign Study. This has been a great experience for me, and hopefully, for my host-family, Norman and Rae Walker, whom 1 would like to thank. The Walkers have made this year so great for me. At the same time I would like to thank all my teachers and new friends that I’ve made here. When I return to Sweden, I don’t have to go back to school because I’ve already graduated. Instead I’ve a mandatory military service to serve. After that I’m going to a university to study to be a physical education teacher. Living in another country for a year has been a great experience for me. I think more people should have the opportunity to live in another country as I have. Sincerely, Per Rotzius Per Rotzius Hei, My name is Tove Vibeke Amundsen and I come from a lit- tle place in the northern part of Norway; the land of the mid- night sun. My town is called Laleselv, and has only 2,500 citizens. The summers are very short up there, and the winters arc very long. It’s light for 10 days and nights during May and July, and in the winter it is dark from November to February. The sun is gone from November to February. We get a lot of snow, and it is very cold. Thirty degrees is not an unusual temperature in the winter. I am sponsored by the EF, the Educational Foundation for Foreign Study. I came over here because visiting America has been my biggest dream. This way of life is very new to me. People are more open and friendly, and 1 have made a lot of friends here; 1 hope to make more as the year goes by. The school is different, but I like it this way. Many people have asked my why I came over here, because I don't get any credit for coming. Well I graduated a year ago, so when I go back I can decide whether I want to continue my education or go to work. I know this year is going to be great, and I hope I will be able to travel and visit a lot of new places before I go home. Anyway, I hope I will be able to come back one day. Well, I want to thank everyone for a great year so far. And a special thank you for my American parents and brothers who made it possible for me to come over. If you ever come to Norway please get in touch with me. My house is open for you. I also hope that my friends will keep in touch with me when I go back. Love, Tove Tove Vibeke Amundsen My name is Henning Kaffka. I am a 16-year-old from Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Denmark is smaller than Maine and is made of many islands, with a total population of 5 million citizens. Our language is Danish. In Denmark we sell meat, cheese, and butter to other countries. We do not have any nuclear power; we use oil. There is no drinking age, but we must be 18 to drive a car. There are many reasons why I came to the USA. The first was to learn the language. 1 also wanted to see the American way of life from the inside and meet new friends. I love Maine and its people. I am in a program called ASSE, the American Scandanavian Student Exchange. ASSE sends students to all of the states, ex- cept Hawaii and Alaska. I applied and was chosen by a family from Westbrook, fortunately, and that is why I am here. I would like to thank my family and teachers for being so nice and understanding. I am happy about all the new friends I have made over here. The first quarter of the year I played soccer. Mr. Jordan and Mr. Curran were the coaches, and I thank them. I plan to join tennis and track later this year. I am looking forward to skiing this winter in the mountains of Maine. I have already been to 5 other states and I will be going to New York, Washington, and Florida. I want to see as many places as I can while I am here. I have already graduated from the high school in Denmark. We go to school for 9 or 10 years. I am planning to attend business and accounting school for three years. Then I will pro- bably sign up for the military. When I return some day, I would like to get a job in importing or exporting goods. There is a possiblity that I may be sent back to the USA to learn more about the business. Listen kids, if you ever feel like coming to Denmark, just stop in and say hello. P.S. Only for the girls! Good luck to everybody! Love and Kisses, Henning Henning Kaffka 83 Back, L to R: Cindy Leighton. The Sophomores the ability to deal with the frosh's arrogance as a class and as individuals. To the Juniors the foresight to get college applications out before the deadlines. Tom Jackson leaves his dedication and perseverance, along with 42 pairs of worn out basketball sneakers, to future basketball teams. To Captain Chemistry we leave Steve Samuell and Jessica Roy's shattered lab kit. Mike Rawding leaves his massiveness to Sheldon Remick. The Senior class leaves the chance of winning a Rally to the Juniors. Todd Anderson leaves his charming personality to his sister Kelly to carry on the family tradition. The Physics classes leave Mr. Libby all their projectiles, algebraical equations, and mental gymnastics. Wenda Saunders leaves her season's pass to Pleasant Mt., her drugged euglenas, and her superior grades to anyone who's willing to listen. Kevin O'Brien leaves his '57 troll-mobile and all Buddy Holly albums to Mr. Dyhrberg. Danny Blake leaves his stupid jokes to Mr. Cutter. The seniors leave John Kennie's body to science.
