BLUE AND WHITE 1981 WESTBROOK HIGH SCHOOL WESTBROOK, MAINE DEDICATION We dedicate this yearbook to all the teach- ers of the Westbrook School system. Through their guidance, direction, and sin- cere devotion, they have fully enriched us. The knowledge we have gained from them will certainly have a bearing on our futures. As we prepare to go our separate ways, we are grateful for all that they, our teachers, have given us. They have truly played an important part in “The Way We Were,” as well as in what we will become. — The Blue and White Staff, 1981 THE WAY WE WERE Memories, light the corners of my mind Misty water-colored memories Of the way we were Scattered pictures, of the smiles we left behind Smiles we gave to one another Of the way we were Can it be that it was all so simple then Or has time rewritten every line If we had the chance to do it all again Tell me, would we, could we Memories, may be beautiful and yet What’s too painful to remember We simply choose to forget But it’s the laughter, we will remember Whenever we remember, the way we were! — Marilyn and Alan Bergman V'-rren Memoria! Library 479 Main Street Wsetbrook, Mains 04092 207-854-58S1 3 Memories light the corners of my mind Pride’s Corner School ... of the way we were Saccarappa School . . . But it’s the laughter we will remember. . . 8 whenever we remember the way we were. . . 9 REMEMBER WHEN... ... we were all afraid of the SENIORS? ... the seniors sold us tickets for the “school elevators?” ... SENIORS had open campus? ... the class of’81 (as freshmen) won the football championships? ... we raced milk carton boats? ... it was alright to socialize in the library? ... the boys used to peek through the hole into the girls’ locker room? ... we had to take violin lessons? ... we studied all night for SAT’S? ... the seniors had a war in the apple orchard? ... the cafeteria was for eating, and not for food fights? ... we filled out ALL those MILL REPORTS in office simulation? ... we had squeak-out’s in the library? ... at our school the moon(s) was always shining instead of the sun? ... all the alarm clocks went off in the halls? ... they sang the spam song in the library? ... we did those crazy things for Homecoming week? ... we had some embarrassing moments in Health class? ... HOW COULD WE FORGET!!!??? To the SOPHS— the hopes and anxieties of one day becoming an upperclassman. To the JUNIORS — the memory of the library as it used to be. And finally, we would like to leave one school building, slightly worn, but still able to withstand the footsteps and pranks of over 1000 people at once. 155 Uta Schmidt Exchange Hallo, W My name is Uta Schmidt and I come from Frank- furt, a relatively big city in West Germany. I am stay- ing here in the United States placed by my exchange student organization Y.F.U. (Youth for Understand- ing) because I think it gives me a new view of life. I really enjoy staying here. The people are very friendly and open. I’ve had the opportunity to do some traveling and see some interesting places. I hope to do some skiing and play some tennis, etc., while I’m here. I enjoy the many music and sports activities that your school offers and my school in Germany doesn’t offer as part of its curriculum. When I return to Germany, I'll have three more years of schooling until I graduate. I am going to a college preparatory school called Gymnasium. I also want to take this opportunity to say thank you to my family the Weirs, my friends, and all the teachers who made this year a great experience for me. I hope to return in 1983 for my sister’s graduation. I would also like to spend a year at one of your universities. I hope all my friends will keep in contact with me and feel free to visit me in Frankfurt if you are ever in my country. I know I will never forget this year. Auf Wiedersehen (good-bye) Love Always, Uta 156 Maria-Antonia-Suances-Cruz Students Hej! My name is Catarina Borjesson and I’m the Swedish exchange student this year. I am sponsored by A.S.S.E. (American Scandinavian Student Exchange). I live in a small village, Asa, on the southwest coast of Sweden. I attend a school about the same size as W.H.S. When I go back to school at home, I will have one more year left before I graduate. I’d like to take this opportunity to tell everybody how happy I am that I’ve been able to attend Westbrook High School. I want to thank everyone for making my stay here so pleasant, especially the faculty and my host family. Barbie and Theresa Lutick. Many people asked me why I would spend a year here at Westbrook when I don’t get any credits for it in Sweden, but this is such a great experience. It’s been very interesting to take part in the life of an American family. You have other tradi- tions and other ways of living which are new to me. I’ve been active in extracurricular activities, especially the theater club, which I found very enriching. I’ve made so many new friends. I have memories that I’m going to cherish all my life. In other words, this has been a super year!! If you’re ever in Sweden, I would appreciate it if you came and visited me. Catarina Borjesson Love, Catarina Borjesson Hola! Before anything else, I want to thank the people who first greeted me at this school! Mr. Segee and Mr. Snow. I also want to thank all my teachers: Mr. Hayes, Mrs. Hawkes, Mr. Fol- som, Mr. Rodgers, and Mr. Snow. I especially want to thank my family, the MacDuffie family. My name is Maria-Antonia-Suances-Cruz. I am from Mex- ico City. I live in a suburb of Mexico City called Hociendo Ojo de Agna. It is smaller than Westbrook. I have particularly noticed all the extra curricular activities at this school and I’m sorry I can’t participate in them. You see, I take courses in Portland in the afternoon to learn English. These classes have helped me a lot and I believe that now I can understand your language much better. The opportunity that I had to come to the United States as a student was one of the best in my life and I’m sure I won’t for- get it. I have realized, little by little, that although we are all the same age, you are all very different in many ways. In this country I have experienced things (for me) most of them in school. I have certainly learned a lot from all of you. I would hope that someday you might all visit my country. I give thanks for being able to conquer the doubts and fear that I had at first ... Thanks for the joy and happiness you have given me every day ... Thanks for this year and a future together (in spirit) ... Thanks for loving me and accepting me as I am. Gracias, Sarah. Los quiero, Maria. 157 163 Bathing beauties!
