ikb Oj Blm U te 1979 Westbrook High School Westbrook, Maine EDITORS: Beth Hamilton. Kathy Leighton. Steve Patry. Steve Rand i IN MEMORIAM The Westbrook High School Community has suffered two painful losses during this school year — the death of Glenn Etheridge, a junior student, through a tragic accident, and Mary Melcher, our Assistant Librarian, through a short illness. The abrupt loss of a friend and or col- league under tragic and unanticipated circumstances is difficult to under- stand and accept. We shall look back with fond memories on their accomplishments and the good relationships and pleasant times we had with them. Glenn’s dedication to the music program has been recognized by his fellow musicians, friends and instructors through donations for a memo- rial trophy case to be installed in the Principal’s Office Lobby. Mary's friendly, cooperative manner, her smiling face, her concern for students and faculty will be sorely missed. Memorial gifts have been given in her name to the Westbrook Rescue Unit and the W.H.S. Library. We all can be thankful that we had the pleasure of their company and the joy of their friendship. 2 Those Who Lead TobkofrCo dtod ........4 14 186 ' v Seniors Activities 3 Advertisements wESgsm ■■■ TkoteWliO'Uai Education Skowhegan High School. These loyal supporters, the Westbrook cheerleaders, spend long hours in order to be the best that they can be. This year found our cheerleaders with a new style of cheering, and a new look for the Varsity girls (pants). It may take a while for both to be accepted but with their enthusiasm and drive it won’t be long. Please give them your support! VARSITY: April Fisher. Dottie McCarthy. The highlight of the season was a 1-1 tie against the State Champion Bonny Eagle team. Leading scorers for the team were Laurie Richards and Beth Hamilton. This year’s cap- tains were Missy Hawkes and Pam Tremblay. Stellar athlete Beth Hamilton was the team’s M.V.P. and Junior Kristi Hoy was awarded Most Improved Player. The seven seniors on the team will be sorely missed next year. Some fine underclassmen, including a once-beaten J. After the loss of 22 Seniors from last year’s squad the young Blazes recorded a 4-6 record. The high- light of the season was a 30-0 romp over defending State Champion Edward Little. This ended the Eddies long win- ning streak and gave 1st year head coach Dennis Walch his first regular season victory. The offense was led by the passing of quarterback Steve Patry to Steve Rand, Craig Girard, Tom Johnson, and Scott Jordan. While the ground attack was ably handled by senior Craig Girard and Jun- iors, Tom Johnson, Scott Jordan, and Danny Wight. The Defense was led by Gary Wescott, Kevin Young and Mark Johnson. Other solid defenders were Tom Bernier, Tim Grant, Steve Rand, Brad Marston, Tom Johnson, and David Jensen. Highlights of the season were wins over so. Portland, Portland, and Brunswick. After a slow start the team improved as the season progressed. Using Olmsted Field as the home field increased the number of spectators and sparked a stronger interest in the program. For the first time since the team was formed, a J.V. team was organized with its own schedule under the guidance of Mr. Peter Curran. The opportunity for underclassmen to participate in game situations will be invaluable to the team in the future. Two young men with soccer experience gave freely of their time and talents and made strong contributions of training and to the spirit of the team, Jeff Stevens of Gorham and Jim Hill, a University exchange student from England will be missed. We again had the pleasurable experience of enjoying the company of and the soccer skills of a Swedish boy, Ulf Zacknsson. Ulf will be thought of frequently by his many friends. My name is Ulf Zackrisson. I'm from a town in Sweden called Lerum. Lerum is about the same size as Westbrook. I live there with my parents and brother. I go to school in Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden. I have to travel 15 miles, by train, to get there. This year I have attended WHS as a senior, through the SISE (Student International Service of Europe) exchange program. During Christmas vacation I had the opportunity to go to Flo- rida, and I'm looking forward to a week in Washington and New York. When I return to Sweden, I will have 2 more years of school before university. The school I’m going to now is called “Gym- nasium” and is something like your “pre-college . I would like to thank all my friends and teachers at W.H.S. I also want to give a special thanks to the great Cummings family with who I have had a super year. This year has been the greatest experience of my life. I will never forget my year and friends in Westbrook. I hope to be able to come back and visit some day, and if any of my friends will visit Sweden, you are always welcome to my home. Er Van. 176 Column I: M. Cross. K. Lunt. S. Lemieux. M. Bouchard. H.
