The blazes finished the season atop the Big Eight Conference with a record of 12-2, and rode to the num- ber one spot in the class A tourney. Unfortunately, as the team went into the tournament, this book went into the pub- lishers, so all we can do here is express confidence in the team’s ability to go all the way. As usual, the team led the league in scoring, but this year’s blazes effort was a balanced operation. The starting five of Jordan, Manoogian, Mullen, Theriault, and Dibiase was acclaimed as the best in the state. Westbrook’s basketball future seems well in hand also, as the junior varsity combine led the league with a 17-1 record. These JV’s, along with several varsity holdovers, should make it a short off season for opposing coaches. 128 Blazes backcourt-poetry in motion Brad breaks for two Mullen bats away a Beatrie shot Jensen looks for help 129 Balanced Team Effort and Strong Defense Key Blazes’ Drive Theriault leads devastating press Jordan spearheads potent fast break Scoring leader Manoogian pumps one from the comer Big John launches one from the foul line Larry and John battle for a rebound Skinner clears the boards Sanborn moves for position as George shoots 131 Brad sets for quick jumper Tony heads for the hoop on typical two-pointer 132 Mullen drops in another . . . Westbrook’s 1972 indoor track team came through in fine fashion, runnings its way to the school’s first winning season in several years. The Blazes finished with a 4-3 record, which placed them in a third place tie with the eventual league champion, South Port- land in the league standings. Although plagued by lack of numbers, the team showed more depth than usual, due primarily to a promising crop of sophomores and juniors. West- brook had two state champions: Tom Getchell, who tied the state-record.in high hurdles, and John Gallant, who came within a half a second of the re- cord in the 1000. This was John’s second state championship. As a team, the Blazes finished sixth in the state, and fifth in the Northern New England meet. 134 Bill Getchell takes Sr. 600 Tom Getchell out front in high hurdles. 135 1972 Football Banquet 136 That long wait for dessert!
