A wide range is offered to adequately supply this need. Each student is required to take four years of English. Basic skills of spelling, vocabulary, and grammar, in addition to creative writing and literature, are emphasized. Special courses are available in Speech, Short Story, Creative Writ- ing, Contemporary American Drama, and other areas. The history department offers various courses to provide students with a balanced background in histoiy. The courses include ancient and medieval, modern European, World, and United States histories, geography, World Af- fairs, and Problems of Democracy. College-bound students are required to take a foreign language. French, Latin, and Spanish are offered this year. French and Latin have four different levels; Spanish, the second-year level. Providing students with the background neces- sary for further education beyond high school in the field of mathematics, the math department offers four course areas, algebra I, geometry, alge- bra II, and Senior Math. Five study areas, biology, earth science, chemis- try, physics, and advanced biology, are available to the college prep students. Providing extensive training, the Vocational course is designed for practical application of student ability. Westbrook, a regional vocational school, offers seven major areas of training in the industrial program: Engineering graphics, Elec- trical and Electronics, Automotive, Building Trades, Machine Shop, Sheet Metal and Weld- ing and Cabinetmaking. Through thorough prepa- ration and training, the Vocational Department prepares a Shop student for successful entry into the occupational field of his choice and also for further training beyond high school. The Home-Economics teachers offer a three year program dealing with areas of great import- ance to future homemakers. Practical skills such as cooking and sewing are taught. Other courses offered include marriage and family living, home improvement, and home management. Ctrl Blazes Make Fiery Comeback The Girls’ Basketball Team’s season this year was one of justification. After many winless seasons the team finished off this year with a 4-win-l-loss record. The improvement and the morale of the girls proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they can do it if they tiy. Next year the girls are looking forward to being part of the Girls’ League of this area. Now that they have proven themselves worthy it is most probable that success has finally found its way to the world of girls’ athletics at Westbrook High. Throughout the year this staff endeavors to cover all the activi- ties of Westbrook High School. Honoring outstanding students, the Westbrook Chapter of the National Honor Society recognizes those students who excel in the areas of scholar- ship, leadership, character, and service. Chosen by a faculty committee set up by national re- quirements, the students first learn of their selection to the society during the traditional tapping cere- mony. The formal induction occurs at a later date. The National Honor Society serves the school by providing tutoring and ushering services. One of the largest and most active groups in the school is the Dramatics Club, an organization which provides an opportunity for the general pub- lic to observe the dramatic talent within Westbrook High School. Tlie Club, which is made up of over fifty members and led by Mr. Fish of the Speech department, sponsors such events as a field trip to Orono, All-Westbrook Night, a three-act play, an evening of one-act plays, and a dramatic work- shop.
