11s lm ss xxl 1 1 1 lox s 1 xxe lxixxlx lll4lXllN N UN Xt I tl I en 1e1s11xx XX XI 111 11 M1111 X x lfllltf A1111 11 11 111 1 1: e Jl 1 xx lim 9 ,-51,314.1 LIL-1e'LL CL 111 fxi-3 5 HE SCHOLASTIC CLUB of long standing at Westbrook High School is made up each year of the sophomores in the college preparatory division Its activities are varied as are the interests of the members The club meets weekly with Miss Tarbell as faculty adviser and occa sionally hears a speaker For instance early in the year Mrs Sadie Holden Nissen spoke on l:locut1on as a Vocation Mrs Nissen s interesting talk included a number of amusing stories concerning her personal experiences in this field Later Mrs Pearl Bachelder lectured on the timely subject What Women 'Xre Doing in Defense At another meeting the Reverend R A MacDonald and Mr Clarence Emery outlined for the club the American system of civilian defense Both of these talks dealt competently with 1nformat1on which we are ill eager to receive these days Another highly entertaining and instructive lecture which the Scholastic Llub heard was that of Mr. George Peterson of the S. D. Warren Paper Com- pmy. using for his content the history of printing and of the printing experi- ments carried on at the S. D. Warren Mill. This sophomore group sponsors the annual junior prom and publishes a piper of short stories essays poems and news items, During the next few months the club hopes to hear other lectures. to have 1 meeting centered around hobbies and to hold its annual banquet, At the end ofthe school year the money remaining in the treisury will be turned into some worthwhile gift for the school. 1
