' nk Xe 1 ,f,,,?H so l DEDICATIO 1 it 'I l. in Q i'-ii-f , ,,-,. A' tit TO MR. ARTHUR FREUNDLICH, psychology instructor, advisor and friend, we, the Senior Class of 1962, dedicate our yearbook. In the challenging days of our stay at Westbrook, his warmth and sincerity have inspired each of us to continue reaching toward higher goals. Mr. Freundlich has constantly revealed his keen interest in the students as individuals, as, with deep understanding, he has helped us work out our own, often petty problems. Through his guidance and example, we have come to a better understanding of ourselves and the World in which we live. Mr. F reundlich's sincere interest in people extends beyond the limits of his active role at this college. In addition to teaching and guiding the students at Westbrook, he is a practicing psychologist and group therapist at the Maine Medical Center. Here too, Mr. Freundlich's unique insight and understanding bring a renewed sense of assurance to everyone with whom he is associated. In grateful appreciation of his enthusiasm, interest, and sincerity, so evident in the congenial smile and twinkling eyes familiar to us all, we are happy and proud to dedicate THE TOWER to Mr. Arthur Freundlich in 1962. westbrook jumor college, 1962 - - - CHANGE D URING these past two years, the members of the class of 1962 have witnessed a period of remark- able progress in the history of Westbrook Junior College. The traditional atmosphere of this friendly, individual-oriented college has inculcated a basic interest in learning, while the constant advancement evident on this campus has taught us that learning is a continuous and ever-changing process. Expansion in the established courses of study and the introduc- tion of the new Dental Hygiene course have been a challenging stimulus to our education. As the West- brook students have grown in understanding and re- sponsibility, so the Westbrook campus has changed as a result of the far-sighted development program. The Dental Hygiene Building, begun in the early spring of our freshman year and dedicated in October, 1961, and the new student center, Oakey Logan Alex- ander Hall, begun this March, are Visible evidence of Westbrookis answer to the demands of education in our World of phenomenal growth and development. Thus, by precept and example, the leaders of West- brook have delineated the interest and application by which we may discern and 'bridge the vast semantic chasm between the degree and education,' we have obtained at Westbrook. iff 9, I' 29 tag 1 Phil A f administration X PRESIDENT OF THE COLLEGE EDWARD YORK BLEWETT The remarkable progress of Westbrook Iunior College in the past three years has come about largely through the efforts of our capable administrator, President Blewett. His dedication to the present and future of this college is, like this yearis convocation series, based upon the theme New Horizons for the 60,s.', In the modern and fully equipped Dental Hygiene building, a new door of knowledge has been opened to Westbrook students as a result of Mr. BleWett's endeavors in the Anniversary DeVel0p- ment Program. Another achievement through this program is now just rising on the VVestbrook horizon. The new student center, dining area, and dormitory of Oakey Logan Alexander Hall will enable this college to uphold its traditions by opening ever more Widely the Westbrook doors to knowledge. Thus, through President BleWett's leadership, students of West- brook are able to see that beyond the horizon there is no setting sun, but rather, a rising sun - if We Will only look far and hard enough. 9 10 Dean of Residence . . . Miss Margaret L. Giroux With sincerity and Warmth of character, Dean Giroux has taught the girls of Westbrook how to live enjoyably and successfully as members of a community While re- taining their individuality. In carrying out the varied functions of her ofilice with understanding and practi- cality funderlined by a Warm sense of hurnorj, Dean Giroux has Won the admiration and affection of us all. f,, xn Dean of the college . . . Mr. Richard F. Bond In the past nine years, Dean Bond has combined his excellent ability and tireless effort in directing the academic functions of the college. For his constant willingness to discuss scholastic problems or future aspirations, and for his able guidance to' adjustment andiacceptance of respon- sibility, every Westbrook student is deeply grateful. The results were Peggy Snow, a Day Hop, president, Winnie Gale of Bell House, vice- presidentg Sue Thomas of Deering House, secretaryg and Amity Peirce of Melville House, treasurer. These well-qualified girls were given a great deal ,of responsi- bility in leading their class through their last year at Westbrook. It was hard to believe that our last year at W.I.C. had come and that in a very short time we would be facing the world on our own. The Christmas season was upon us before we knew it, bringing with it our traditional Christmas Weekend. After much planning and prep- aration, the entire school enjoyed the festivities of the long-awaited weekend. With the coming of spring, many of the seniors spent an enjoyable week in Bermuda basking in the sun. Climaxing our two years at W.I.C. was senior week with the excitement of graduation and the rather sad realization that the time had come when we all would part to travel our separate paths into the future. fi fi N84 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS. The results of the election were as follows: Elizabeth Johnston from Goddard Hall, presidentg Cynthia Chaffee, vice-president, joyce MacDonald, secretary, and Iudith Quist, treasurer, all from Hersey Hall. The winter months brought much excitement and en- joyment to all. Christmas activities, parties, and Christ- mas Weekend itself were events in which all partici- pated. The campus turned green once again with the coming of spring, and preparations for May Weekend were begun by the freshman class. Given in honor of the seniors, the weekend was highlighted by the tapping of the junior Deans. These freshman girls, chosen as examples of the Westbrook Way, will assist the student body and the college throughout the following year. With their first year of college life near completion, the freshmen leave for summer vacation with many fond memories. It is the duty of these seniors to set the example of the Westbrook Way. VVhenever ushers or guides are needed, the junior Deans come to the rescue. Within its eight issues, the W.I.C. News highlighted off and on campus activities with feature articles and student and faculty interviews. In the Woman of the Month articles, revealing a special senior personality who has displayed respon- sibility and leadership on campus, in the editorials, letters to the editor, and various other columns, the paper provided interest and stimulus for its readers and exhibited a professional touch which only hard work and concern can achieve.
