K U uw There are very Few people that we meet during the course of our lives whose advice and reassurance are able to lead us in the proper direction and show us the way to achieve our goals. From this small number there are 'few people whose warm person- ality and sincere interest in our futures can give' us the courage to strive toward self-betterment and success. Among these outstanding people there is one who is the symbol of the qualities which we all admire and seek to attain: honesty, gener- osity, congeniality, kindness, and unending devotion. Because all who come to Westbrook Junior College agree that you are unmistakably the person so described, we proudly dedicate this, the 1961 Tower, to you, Myron Hager, our Director of Admissions. is it it M it wits, 755, ':2 J- ig' ll .sign wiiiiz, ii in iw ip eq, H. Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being - let me do it now. Let me not deter, nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. - Author Unknown You may ask what is the Westbrook Spirit? Yet it cannot be expressed by a word or group of words. lt is the mark that comes from spontaneous kindness which can only be shown through true devo- tion. It is an idea of giving help to others with no thought of self reward. lt is an action which is never ending in personal satisfaction and grateful appreciaton. It is Rupert J. Westcott, our beloved Rupe, who will be fondly ,remembered for being the symbol of the undying spirit of Westbrook and the friendliness that prevails. 5 Xi? x 5 ' N, akii W -15 - h V, ' 'ff ir, up M ' iii D ' 2 Q ik ' , I' 11151 x E im , 5 QW, EA 5 5 W s ' gf. The election of Senior Class Officers was one of the first activities on the agenda for the class of 1961. The results of the election: Sally Ramslourg, president: Penny Marsaw, vice-presidentf Claire Bellegarde, secretaryp Mary Anne Barretta, treasurer. With this election came the realization that we were all seniors and in ten short months we would graduate. lt was a happy thought but sad too as it marks the end of our student life at W.J.C. The next time we return it would be as Alumnae. Before we had turned around twice the Christmas Dance was upon us. Almost half a year gone! Then came finals in January with much to our pleasant sur- prise, thirty-six seniors on Dean Bond's prized list. Our next step was Bermuda or for those who preferred native land, Fort Laud- erdale. For the perennial skier there was North Conway or Stowe. All too soon May Weekend and then graduation came. As we tried on our caps and gowns many pensive faces were observedp but the excitement of Senior Week brightened us all and we looked forward to Commencement with enthusiasm. l 5 1 l -'wir me 'V ffl GIS? After overcoming the initial impact of orientation, the freshmen of Westbrook settled down to the serious task of becoming adiustecl to college life. For many, it was their first venture away from home and the routines of studying, extra- curricular activities and college life in general were very confusing. However, they managed to find themselves and elect as their officers: Beth Kendall, presi- dent, Lu Jenson, vice-president, Amity Pierce, secretary, and Suzanne Van Kuren, treasurer. December brought the Christmas Dance and Christmas vacation, both of which were anticipated. After returning from vacation, they found the problem of mid- year exams facing them. These were not anticipated, but as the saying goes, This too will pass. They did and it was time for Winter Carnival. The advent of spring brought plans for May Weekend, which was given by the freshmen in honor of the Senior class. This was a great success and as usual, the tapping of the Junior Deans was one of the most important events of the weekend. Now it is time for finals and the thought of summer vacation is second on the minds of all. Then it will be home for the summer with the hope of returning in the fall. 54 5 DAY HOPS ,P- V . Among the things they have worked on aside from the regular campus activities are the Day Hop Dance and tea. They have shown their artistic ability through participation in clubs, student sponsored activities, sports and the many other extracurricular activities of the campus. The Day Hops have elected as their officers: Martha Galbraith, president, Mary Lou St. Peter, vice-president, Robin Shaw, secretary, and Jane Hallowell, treasurer. With the adequate help of the seniors, the freshmen have been able to learn much that will help them to carry on the friendly spirit through their senior year. 55 DONNELLY HOUSE l . 1 l 1 5 t l Row 1: 5. Being members of the newest house on campus, the mixture of freshmen and seniors has proved very beneficial to all concerned in participating in many of the campus activities. The girls have become almost sisters to one another under the guidance of their house director, Mrs. Blair. Among other things they seem to be avid animal lovers and have found that this has its drawbacks. The girls who were chosen to lead Donnelly were Sandy Ross, president, Shally McCarron,' vice-president, Donna Anderson, treasurer, and Linda Cassey, secre- tary. The girls formed a close and lasting relationship that will not be forgotten. 56 1 GODDARD HALL 2 ei , ft 'tal 3-mg Q Row 1: B. Matthews, A. Rittenhouse, N. Murphy, S. Wakefield, C. Busher. Row 2: W. They were represented in many of the activities on the campus. Pizza . . . Who wants to play cards? . . . Do you now who's pinnedfl . . . They elected as their house offi- cers: Beth Kendall, president, Sandy DeCiccio, vice-president, Polly Pugsley, treas- urer, and Carol Williams, secretary. They have done many things to make Mrs. Hill, their house director, very proud of them and have proved that, even though they are a large dorm, they can work together as a team. The close- ness of freshmen and seniors is very important and this has been shown time ancl again by their participation in the activities on the campus. The many sorrows and ioys that have been shared by this group of girls will remain in their minds and hearts for many years after graduation. The otticers of Houghton are Adrienne Cyr, president, Sue Clapper, vice-presi- dent, Gerry Brockway, secretary, and Shirly Abbott, treasurer. They are the tirst examples of W. J. C. that freshmen meet upon their arrival in September. The Junior Deans are responsible for orienting the freshmen in the Westbrook spirit, making them feel at home, and setting the tone of behavior. Because of the responsibility placed on a Junior Dean, there can be no greater honor than to be tapped a J. D. at the traditional ceremony during May Weekend. The traditional talent show was given, thoroughly enioyed by all, and of course there was the smoker competition, helping to end the weekend with excitement and fond memories. 83 CHRISTMAS. WEEKEND 3 H, EAE. ff y Q Q A 1' What could set a more delightful atmosphere for this year's Christmas weekend than Mistletoe Mist. Even the weather was cooperative. This year, for the first time, a buffet and a dance were held at the Eastland Hotel, which was beautifully decorated to suit the theme of the weekend. Of course, there were many house parties and the traditional carol sing was held on the mall. The carol sing is perhaps one of the most memorable events held on campus. There is a true feeling of togetherness and a memory firmly imprinted on every Westbrook student's mind. 84 .45 5 , L sh-.LT f-L13 1. ,': I ff, . 45g'fifL I , QQ 'Y ' A 'Puz-tug-,H V x I5 Q ifiwar-3 ' 'ff' 31' ' . The weekend began with an ice show, iazz festival, and house parties on Friday. Of course, no one would miss the Alumnae-Varsity basketball game on Saturday. Saturday, the piece de resistance, the carnival formal, and at long last came the crowning of the queen.
