GLEE CLUB Concerts and rehearsals have provided many interesting experiences for the members in this year's Glee Club. During the traditionally exciting Christmas season, the girls gave Christmas programs at the Portland Men's Club, and the Kiwanis Club as well as making a broadcast of holiday music for a local radio station. Here at school, the Glee Club presented a concert preceding the annual Christmas pageant and they have added to the religious life of the college by singing at the chapel services every Wednesday. However, none of these appearances would have been possible without the assistance of two people -- Mr. Neily and Miss Johnson. Through 'his untiring eiforts, Mr. Neily has used his extensive musical ability to direct the Glee Club to success. Miss Johnson has been a very capable accompianist as well as assistant director. With leadership such as this and the continued rehearsals of work and fun, the Glee Club was assured of success.

WOMAN'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIGN Since the beginning of the year, the WAA looked forward to and planned their biggest event of the year - the Winter Carnival at WIC. This year's theme Carnival of Musicv was carried out successfully although there was no snow and the queen, Ella Gardner, had a throne of manufactured ice. The royal court consisting of senior girls elected by the students, included Joyce DeGoey, Ann Laird, Jadine Raynes, and Mary Ruddick. Many guests as well as students witnessed the individual house ice skits which were based on popular songs chosen by house members and the day students. First prize went to Lodge for its presentation of the Teddy Bears' Picnic. Whitman and Houghton gained honorable mention for their skating skits of Goofus and The Old Lamp- lighter respectively. House decorations were also based on the chosen song and these were judged because of the lack of snow for sculpturing. Here the first honor went to Houghton while Hersey Hall took honorable mention. A ski boot dance wound up the evening. Saturday the girls and their guests were found enjoying themselves at Tomlinson's Riding School where they participated in sports and had lunch. The main feature of the afternoon was the Varsity-Alumnae basketball game. The climax of this WAA event was the Carnival Ball held at the Eastland Hotel. The WAA Board organizes the athletic life on campus and promotes sports at WIC. Besides the Winter Carnival, they also sponsor annually the May Festival. Members of the Year's board include president, Mary Ruddickg vice-president, Peggy Rochfordg secretary, Ella Gardner, treasurer, Betsy Webber, senior maroon leader, Jeanette Crooker, freshman maroon leader, Jayne Goodwin, senior gray leader, Joyce DeGoeyg and fresh- man gray leader, Charlene Black.

RETAILIN G CLUB The Retailing Club was very active this year under the leadership of Betty Ackerman, president and Barbara Beck, secretary. The retailers all worked in department stores for a six-weelc period between Thanks- giving and Christmas recess. They learned many of the aspects of buying, selling, and decorating through these positions. In the early part of the school year the retailers were delighted by the demonstrations of Mr. Germaine, a hair stylist in the city of Portland. He experimented in hair cutting, dyeing, and waving on some of the more adventurous members of the club. The results were surprising and very fashionable. The club scheduled a discussion period in February for the members to compare and discuss their various experiences while they were out in the field of retailing. This en- able many students to consider their future occupations as retailers. In March an annual style show was sponsored by the Porteous-Mitchell Company which was enjoyed by the entire college. It helped bring everyone up-to-date on the latest fashion ideas. i The faculty advisors for the club this year were Miss Curry and Miss Bancroft.
