MAURICE TOMILSON , Equitation i ? w w A 1 S , . 1 ,Q N EW BUILDING April 1950 was a significant month for both students and faculty. Ar this time ground was broken for the New Library, the first building to be erected since 1900 at WIC. The past year has seen many drives to raise money by students, faculty, staff, and alumnae. A building fund campaign office was opened in Monument Square, Portland, headed by Mrs. Jane Garrison. She divided all possible sources of revenue into six groups, which are: 1. Trustees 2. Commerce and Industry 3. Faculty-Staff 4. Parents 5. Students 6. Commemorative Gifts The Alumnae Association took charge of its own fund raising campaign and have pro- mised a total of ,5i15,000. The new building consists of a basement and three Hoors. On the ground level there is a sound proof music room on the left and opposite it the Alumnae Lounge. Diagonally across from the lounge is a kitchenette which will be used for refreshments and teas. Next to the lounge on the right are a series of classrooms: 11 a sewing lab, 21 arts and crafts room, and a remedial reading room. On the first floor is the Nlemorial reading room given by Dr. and Mrs. Proctor in memory of their son. Across the hall on the right is the new library and a workshop for the librarian for repairing books and so forth. In back of the workshop is a stack room where books may be stored. There are three classrooms on the right which will eventually be used for extra stack rooms. These classrooms all have movable partitions. The second floor consists of two classrooms with a movable partition which folds into the wall to make one large room. Next to the classrooms is an office for the English depart- ment. The rest of this iioor is to be used for rooms to facilitate 28 girls. The third Hoor is to be used as a dormitory with two faculty suites in front. In future years the third Hoor will also house 28 girls, but it is not to be completed until the space is needed. On May 15 parents were invited to tour the new building. Back row: A. Foster, M. It strives to bring both students and faculty closer together by instilling within them a deeper understanding and appreciation of the beauty surrounding life. Members of SCA sponsor the chapel services, panel discussions with other college CA,s, fellowship hours, Sunday vesper services, prayer group meetings, a Christmas candle-light service, and other social hours. Delegates are sent to conferences sponsored by the Student Christian Movement of New England, not only to strengthen and en- rich their own lives, but to bring back and share with the rest of its members the experiences they have encountered. The officers for this year included: Vivian Wilson, president, Josephine Young, vice- presidentg Jadine Raynes, corresponding secretary, Joyce Wilson, recording secretary, Cynthia Ewell, treasurer, Cordelia Howe and Donna Hamilton, program co-chairmen, Betsy Hunter and Jeannette Croolcer, publicity co-chairmen, Ellen Bell, chapel chair- man, and Miss Marilyn Johnson, faculty advisor. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is composed of eight students, five seniors and three freshmen, who meet with Dean Dwyer on the first Monday of the month in Hersey 106. The Senate is composed of a representative from each house and club, depending upon the number of members. Thus, each collegiate organization and house are represented in the Student Association. The council works with the Residence Board and Miss Carter in initiating movements to give every student a well-rounded college program. It acts as a balance wheel between the college administration and the students by discussing and acting upon the sug- gestions of students and faculty. This year the association is under the leadership of Constance King with Ella Gardner, Dorothy Burton, Barbara Davis, Nancy Connors, Joyce Wilson, Joanne Greene, and Janice Hanninger as representatives. They sponsored their annual dance in the spring which was planned in collaboration with Portland Junior College Student Council. The association selected students who have made outstanding contributions to college life to be awarded special honors at graduation. It also compiled the Westbrook Handbook for freshmen. CLASS OFFICERS This year's senior class officers were elected last year by a unanimous vote of the stu- dent body. Acting again as president this year is Ann Laird, under whose guidance the seniors have put in an exciting and interesting year of activities. The two outstanding functions taking place this year under the supervision of the class officers were the Graduation formal and the Christmas formal. Many class meetings were held this year also to discuss pertinent topics of interest to the senior class. The freshman officers were elected at the beginning of this year and have taken part in many functions under the able leadership of Nancy Kaull. The freshman officers worked very diligently to make the Cotton Ball a success. Through the perseverance of Lorraine Ruel, Lois Nickerson, Beverly Morris, and Muriel Troy, the class dues were collected and placed with the profits made at the dances so that a sizeable sum remains in the treasury to be used by next year's classes. WOMAN'S ATHLETIC ASSOCIATIGN Since the beginning of the year, the WAA looked forward to and planned their biggest event of the year - the Winter Carnival at WIC. This year's theme Carnival of Musicv was carried out successfully although there was no snow and the queen, Ella Gardner, had a throne of manufactured ice. The royal court consisting of senior girls elected by the students, included Joyce DeGoey, Ann Laird, Jadine Raynes, and Mary Ruddick. Many guests as well as students witnessed the individual house ice skits which were based on popular songs chosen by house members and the day students. First prize went to Lodge for its presentation of the Teddy Bears' Picnic. Whitman and Houghton gained honorable mention for their skating skits of Goofus and The Old Lamp- lighter respectively. House decorations were also based on the chosen song and these were judged because of the lack of snow for sculpturing. Here the first honor went to Houghton while Hersey Hall took honorable mention. A ski boot dance wound up the evening. Saturday the girls and their guests were found enjoying themselves at Tomlinson's Riding School where they participated in sports and had lunch. The main feature of the afternoon was the Varsity-Alumnae basketball game. The climax of this WAA event was the Carnival Ball held at the Eastland Hotel. The WAA Board organizes the athletic life on campus and promotes sports at WIC. Besides the Winter Carnival, they also sponsor annually the May Festival. Members of the Year's board include president, Mary Ruddickg vice-president, Peggy Rochfordg secretary, Ella Gardner, treasurer, Betsy Webber, senior maroon leader, Jeanette Crooker, freshman maroon leader, Jayne Goodwin, senior gray leader, Joyce DeGoeyg and fresh- man gray leader, Charlene Black. Janice Ifnnninger is the presiclent nf this year's clnh and is assisted hy ,Beverly NVithee, Andrey VVhiting mul jcnneilc- fil'lI0kClA, . GLEE CLUB Concerts and rehearsals have provided many interesting experiences for the members in this year's Glee Club. During the traditionally exciting Christmas season, the girls gave Christmas programs at the Portland Men's Club, and the Kiwanis Club as well as making a broadcast of holiday music for a local radio station. Here at school, the Glee Club presented a concert preceding the annual Christmas pageant and they have added to the religious life of the college by singing at the chapel services every Wednesday. However, none of these appearances would have been possible without the assistance of two people -- Mr. Neily and Miss Johnson. Through 'his untiring eiforts, Mr. Neily has used his extensive musical ability to direct the Glee Club to success. Miss Johnson has been a very capable accompianist as well as assistant director. With leadership such as this and the continued rehearsals of work and fun, the Glee Club was assured of success. liark row: M. Rollinson, E. Ilurtl, B. Glillgfll, li. lirown D. Berry, B. NYitl1ce. RETAILIN G CLUB The Retailing Club was very active this year under the leadership of Betty Ackerman, president and Barbara Beck, secretary. The retailers all worked in department stores for a six-weelc period between Thanks- giving and Christmas recess. They learned many of the aspects of buying, selling, and decorating through these positions. In the early part of the school year the retailers were delighted by the demonstrations of Mr. Germaine, a hair stylist in the city of Portland. He experimented in hair cutting, dyeing, and waving on some of the more adventurous members of the club. The results were surprising and very fashionable. The club scheduled a discussion period in February for the members to compare and discuss their various experiences while they were out in the field of retailing. This en- able many students to consider their future occupations as retailers. In March an annual style show was sponsored by the Porteous-Mitchell Company which was enjoyed by the entire college. It helped bring everyone up-to-date on the latest fashion ideas. i The faculty advisors for the club this year were Miss Curry and Miss Bancroft. Bark row: l'. llean, D, Grinnell, G. INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB This year the IRC was active on campus with informal discussions in which both faculty and students participated helped to enlighten and to create a better under- standing of the international conflicts. .The IRC sponsored a United Nations Day at which time faculty and students who had had the privilege of visiting or living in other countries throughout the world gave their impressions of how other people of the world live. A number of students participated in a discussion on the topic, Should we use the Atomic Bomb in Korea? Members of the faculty composed a panel, each giving their ideas of the use of the bomb. Later, the discussion was turned over to the students for their respective opinions. Miss Dunn gave an interesting talk on her experiences while hitch-hiking through seven countries in Europe. Miss Toussaint also gave us an idea of what living in France would be like, if any of us were ever fortunate to have the privilege of visiting there. Judith Westaway attended an International Relations Conference at the University of Montreal. Two representatives of the United Council on World Affairs, V. W. Jao of Formosa and Theodore Maclamba of the Phillipines, were guest speakers at a college forum. Members of the club comprised a discussion panel for the forum. The club was under the direction of Sylvia Kuraner, presidentg Patricia Currier, vice- presiclent and secretaryg and Barbara Meade, treasurer. Miss Pattee was the faculty advisor. llvrt- is thc huchliugf grmlln ul' :wlrcsscs who kt-pt XYJI' vulerlninml wilh their clr:1m:ltic zulnility this yn-nr. It included a Variety Show, a Christmas pageant, the Dramatic Drag, a three act play, and special events at the Winter Carnival and May Day coronation. A series of eight popular films were shown by the club. The spring production, Nine Girls, was presented March 16 and 17. The cast in- cluded Beverly Gough, Colleen Colson, Judith Westaway, Kathryn Tsomides, Elizabeth Ackerman, Betsy Hunter, Erla Lanlc, Elizabeth Lott, and Barbara Chase. Other mem- bers of the club pitched in on duties with scenery, publicity, props, ushering, make-up, costume, curtains, and sound. The production was under the supervision of Miss Jean Farren. Officers of the Masque and Candle are, Colleen Colson, president, Constance Perry, vice-president, Barbara Hesslin, secretary, Jadine Raynes, executive-secretary, and Ann Laird, treasurer. l L .fx Va 2 '- ZH 1 ' .H .ami W l1'urk row: K. THE SCIENCE CLUB Although still one of the more recently developed of the clubs on campus, the Science Club is one of the most progressive. An executive board works in conjunction with the club's ofhcers to insure greater success within the organization. The officers were: Dorothy Grinnell, president, Patricia Markowitz, vice-president, Beverly Morris, treasurer, and Judith Westaway, secretary. Among the activities of the club was a trip to Harvard Museum in Boston. More than half a dozen films were sponsored by the Science Club this past year on such sub- jects as heating, reproduction, television, and fluorescent lighting. Another field trip made by the members of the club was a visit to one of the more prominent hospitals in the vicinity for the medical students. This gave the students a chance to visualize the type of work they would soon be doing. The Science Fair which was such a success in 1950 was again presented. This year there were exhibits displayed by the students in chemistry, bacteriology, zoology, anatomy, psychology, and physiology. ljurk ron-: M. Knplzm, K. Spry, S. Friend, F. Bartlett. E. Hell. Tl. This year the clubhouse and stable at Tomlinson's has been alive with the activities of the club. Mom and Pop Tomlinson are endeared to all who know their careful guidance. Tests in bridling, saddling, and horsemanship were taken by all the members of the club. A drill squad was formed under the leadership of Barbara May. In October the club held a breakfast ride and everyone arose early for a refreshing Canter in the country. A Christmas party was given by the club for its members. Presents were exchanged and carols were sung. The outstanding events this year were the annual gymlchana and the Wiliter Carnival activities. Prizes were awarded at both of these events to the riders in all the classes who proved themselves worthy. Sally Friend, Mary Jipson, Jean Parfitt, Constance Staub, and Winnifred Simmonds won ribbons in many of these events. The freshman riders also proved themselves quite skilled in the activities. Hope our only freshman, Rickey, will carry on the spirit of Houghton next year. Our engaged mem- bers, Jo and Fletch will soon become Mrs. Willis and Mrs. Robinson. We are very fortunate in being the first class to share the numerous opportunities for fun that the farm offers. In April, 1950, the college purchased the 100-acre farm, which is located just off Route 302, about four miles north of Bridgron, Maine. The rambling eight-room Cape Cod style house is conveniently situated at the base of Pleasant Nlountain between Highland Lake and Moose Pond. As freshmen we made several work trips to the farm. Buildings were torn down, the house sand papered, and trails blazed to the ponds. This fall the farm took on a new coat of red paint when the first trip was made. Then it was ready to be opened for weekend trips. What fun was in store from then on! The crowd would pile into the new college bus and with all voices raised in song would head for Briclgton. A weekend trip at the farm might include volleyball and softball games, hiking up Pleasant Mt. and, of course, learning new games like Ha or I Saw a Barf' Also, many hours were spent in getting everyone In Cohootsv or introducing them to Aunt Tilly. Later in the evening, everyone would gather around the campfire or on colder nights, around that wonderful wood stove, and harmonize on the old tunes. Sometimes on Saturday nights a trip would be taken to Briclgton to see the not quite latest movie. It would always be either a six gun Western, a thriller-diller mystery or Superman. The time would come to turn in, but the more ambitious ones would choose to tell tall tales till dawn. Wasn't it heavenly to be awakened and get a whiff of bacon frying or coffee perking? With the coming of snow, Westbrook Acres turned into a winter resort for the ski and skating enthusiasts. Mt. Pleasant with its ski tow and the frozen surfaces of Moose Pond was all one could ask for. Alumnae weekend at the farm will be eagerly awaited for that means relaxation and healthy fun all rolled into one. Westbrook Acres - here we come! l ei l .. N EW BUS A newly acquired addition to the campus of Westbrook Junior College is the gray and maroon bus which has performed many services since its arrival in the Fall. To Glee Club programs, to basketball games and to week-ends at the farm, it has carried many students. . In reality, the bus has come to be regarded as a new and wonderful friend to the girls who have been offered its services. Since it was originally purchased for the Outing Club, it is only natural that that organization has received its most outstanding help- fulness. On many Saturday mornings whether sunny or rainy, a familiar sight to the whole campus is the bus pulling to a stop before Hersey or the gymnasium. The doors of various dorms open and students dressed in dungarees and sport shirts race toward the bus whose doors stand open awaiting their entrance. In anticipation of a few de- lightful days of relaxation, the Outing Club members climb on board. The doors close and in hardly any time at all, the bus with its merry-making occupants turns into College Street. Stopping at the end for a second it turns onto Stevens Avenue. The week-end has begun, for the Westbrook Junior College bus is steering a course straight for Westbrook Acres. 7 fzeafzmen Lfzeafofz Dona E. Ames Elizabeth A. Babcock Irene M. Babey Nancy A.
