The Long And Winding Road As soon as teenagers hit high school, and sometimes before, they long for the day when they can drive away in the family car (minus the family). However, to reach this goal, they must experience the trauma of learning how to drive. This process starts with the infamous driver ' s ed. For what other reason would sophomores and juniors stay at school, notebooks in hands, for an extra two hours every week for several months, even when it was not a requirement. It ' s all for that sacred pink slip from the Registry of Motor Vehicles; the result of endless boring hours in the lecture hall. The most entertaining part of driv- er ' s ed is the celebrated road lesson. If you ' re lucky, your instructor falls asleep in the passenger seat after the first five minutes, or he she decides that ten minutes is close enough to an hour. If you ' re unlucky, you get the guy with bad breath who shouts at you constantly about your wheel turning technique and makes you do a three point turn in the rotary. The worst part about it is feeling like the sign on top of the car reads, That ' s right. I don ' t know how to drive. And when people from school pass you on the road, they all stare into the car to see if they know who ' s driving. Those can be traumatic days, but in the long run, it ' s worth it. You go for your license, fail the test three times, and on your first solo, you flatten the neighbor ' s cat. Or is it worth it? (Right)Jason Dibatista friends make the best of a boring time in the lecture hall. 18
