WESTBOROUGH HIGH SCHOOL W XXX XX WEST MAIN STREET, WESTBOROUGH, MA 01581 Phone buddies, Jen Hall and Jean Pier- son. Karen McLaughlin tickles the ivories in the band room. JUST FOR THE RECORD Music is a world within itself. It ' s a language we all understand. This book is a record of our world of music. Although we could not provide actual music for your page- turning pleasure, there is a unique and unsung song that represents every aspect of Westborough High School life. We believe that it is time to record these songs and in the process, to record this year. This book is especially for those of us who have trouble remembering what happened two hours ago and will definitely forget some of the more interesting moments and aspects of this high school year very quickly. We have tried to record the more enter- taining, and maybe not so memorable, features of our student life, sports, academics, clubs and people with pictures and words. A record should be entertaining. So just for the record . . . THIS was YOUR YEAR! GOING PLATINUM It ' s not what people look like, or what they wear, or even who they hang around with that makes them spe- cial. It ' s what they do, how they react, what they say, Bruce Ledoux prepares for gradu- ation a year early on the night of the talent show. and in what they partici- pate that makes them unique people. That ' s what this, the first section of our year- book, is all about. It ' s we, the students, in our daily lives. It ' s what we exper- ience, how we react, and how we learn to grow from all that we accomplish. The activities portrayed in the following pages make us what we are in terms of a student body. Our student life, as a whole, is outstanding; and because of this, our record is going platinum. Senior Spirit The dreary weather didn ' t dam- pen the spirit of the school ' s newest senior class as the first Senior Breakfast got under way at Ab- dow ' s. The class of ' 86 had just fin- ished school, and we were eager to take over. The waitresses looked to- w ard the door with distressed ex- pressions on their faces as we all plowed in. Everyone crammed into the tables with their friends, and the chowing began. We have to admit, we were a bit rowdy. After the man- ager proceeded to yell at the whole group, which filled the entire back of the restaurant, students gradually started to leave. Abdow ' s wasn ' t thrilled with us to say the least. On the way back to the school, ro- tary traffic was held up by soon-to- be seniors. There was even an article about it in the next day ' s paper! When we arrived, we proceeded to take over the senior balcony as our first demonstration of senior spirit. Heather, Amy, Patti, and Sharon, wait- ing to be seated. Jeff Matthew ' s jams with his band I ' nder the Gun, featuring Kelly Harney on vocals. So this is where the Junior guys went! Their comical act was ac- companied by the song You Shook Me All Night Long. Stars on 45 ' s What could be more fun and enter- taining than a live combination of a lot of Star Search material and a little bit of the Gong Show ? Well, the answer is nothing, especially when it is hosted by the Class of 1987. The evening of March 20, 1986 launched this great and traditional undertaking known as the Junior Tal- ent Show with the help of the three Masters of Ceremony: Sean Linnane, Bruce Ledoux and Chris Gorak. These part-time comedians (and ex- cellent ad-libbers ) added a touch of humor and fun to the show between acts. Included among their most pop- ular material were the antics of Sears Driving School and their accom- ished students and an imperson- ation by Sean Linnane of the lovable but elusive, all-around good-sport, custodian, Fred. During the course of the show, some of the junior girls found the junior guys to be elusive also, which they ex- pressed in their rendition of Where ' d the Junior Guys Go? Several of the junior guys were eventually found, however, a little later on stage doing a diaper dance to You Shook Me All Night Long and were joined by the girls at the end (who were somewhat more fashionably clothed). On the more serious side, Johnny, Fish and the Flamingos swept the vo- cal band category with an outstand- ing performance of Come Sail Away sung by Brian Karski, who added an interesting flair to the act by starting out in the audience and working his way up to the stage. Joanna Tracy and John Pehl did justice to two Jim Croce songs which they performed like ex- perts, thereby winning the vocal cate- gory. In the dancing category, Penny Smith swung and swayed to The Conga in keeping with tradition. She shared her victory with Lauren Glick- man, Chris Barlow and Stephanie Travers in their spunky routine to the classic hit Leader of the Pack . Also included was Pete Ralph who did a great job of keeping the motorcycle seat warm and looking cool. Scott Messier, Pam Harding, Nick Lever- ne, and Amy Blanchard huddle for a snap- shot. Title Track Junior year is a big year for all high school students. Many things happen that year: SAT ' s, license, talent show, and that mythical highlight, THE PROM. Preparations for such a ceremo- nious occasion take a great deal of style and tact. Who to ask, and what to wear? After much indecision (and many surprising combinations), dates are found, garments are chosen, res- ervations are made, and the excite- ment builds. Limos, Caddys, sports cars, and Dad ' s old Chevy rolled in on May 17, 1986 to embark on this jubilant oc- casion. The court was picked, dubbing Heather Cromwell and Matt Day the Royal Couple, forever yours Faith- fully. Festivities were then moved to the open plains under the starry sky where a warm fire kept us going. The early dawn guided us through hours of traffic on our way to Hampton Beach. The unseasonably hot sun beat down on our tired, and now painfully burned bodies and made us all the more unprepared for school on Mon- day. Sean Linnane and Linda Richards take a breather. Most of us depend on these crucial concrete struc- tures as spots for socializing and general support (literally). Where else could a person make a friend, make a date, make a joke, or just lean in exhaustion for a while? Students even risk tardies in order to hang out and look cool for a few minutes between classes, which was especially hard this year with the reduced passing time. The different levels and locations of the balconies serve to separate class gatherings, the most established being in the infamous senior balcony. This par- ticular balcony is the most annoying when trying to use the stairs because this entails muddling through a sea of sen- iors. The balconies add greatly to the char- acter of the school Signs announcing ex- tra-curricular events can be hung here so that all students are sure to see them. These signs express the spirit of the school by congratulating our athletic teams, and anything that brings added spirit to the school is a great advantage. Mark Montgomery and Dave Coonan take a mental break. Kris Kahler shoots the photographer an evil eye. Mark Hensley wonders what ' s up. Tim Goland and others above overcome their fear of heights. Off the Record The high school has many ways in which it attempts to raise the general morale of the students. Whether it be earning funds, or increasing school spirit or even just getting students to- gether to have a good time, our school likes to think we stick together and give each other support. In April of 1986 we had a great time at the annual Competition Day. Each grade sent out it ' s best (?) and struggled to win. The final victors were the class of ' ?8 (who else could it have been but the seniors?). Later, in June, the class of ' 87 ' s new yearbook staff held it ' s carwash. It was a great way to get the new staff together, and we had a blast! — Oh, the customers that we had seemed farily pleased with the results as well! Richelle Olterman and Katie Strecker have some good clean fun. 14 Debi Concaugh supported by her teammates with an extra boost from Steve O ' Keefe. Pam Hemberger takes a reflective pause from the busy car wash. 16 Tail-gaters at large. The band plays in one of the traditional Ranger formations. The WHS Band jumps into action at half- time. Kim Martin grabs someone else ' s sung- lasses by mistake. The various hilltop spectators take it easy. The cheerleaders celebrate a touchdown in the ever-popular swinging circle. 17 The Long And Winding Road As soon as teenagers hit high school, and sometimes before, they long for the day when they can drive away in the family car (minus the family). However, to reach this goal, they must experience the trauma of learning how to drive. This process starts with the infamous driver ' s ed. For what other reason would sophomores and juniors stay at school, notebooks in hands, for an extra two hours every week for several months, even when it was not a requirement. It ' s all for that sacred pink slip from the Registry of Motor Vehicles; the result of endless boring hours in the lecture hall. The most entertaining part of driv- er ' s ed is the celebrated road lesson. If you ' re lucky, your instructor falls asleep in the passenger seat after the first five minutes, or he she decides that ten minutes is close enough to an hour. If you ' re unlucky, you get the guy with bad breath who shouts at you constantly about your wheel turning technique and makes you do a three point turn in the rotary. The worst part about it is feeling like the sign on top of the car reads, That ' s right. I don ' t know how to drive. And when people from school pass you on the road, they all stare into the car to see if they know who ' s driving. Those can be traumatic days, but in the long run, it ' s worth it. You go for your license, fail the test three times, and on your first solo, you flatten the neighbor ' s cat. Or is it worth it? Festivities ' Twas the week before holiday va- cation and all through the school, ev- ery student was smiling, despite the No Elfing rule. This year, the ad- ministration decided that they had had enough of certain holiday festivi- ties such as elfing at the high school. However, the School Commit- tee relented somewhat after a while, knowing that they really couldn ' t post elf snipers in the halls, and the tradi- tion lived on. Everyone was dressed in their best red and green and gave an atmosphere of holiday cheer to the school. Also, several seniors brought that holiday cheer to the streets of Westboro, despite the pouring rain. You just can ' t reason with elves some- times. Back at the school, the rest of the students were getting involved in the festivities. The foreign language de- partment threw a party (actually a fi- esta) hosted by Mrs. Boyle. There were decorations, music, and lots of food. Entertainment was provided by an up and coming magician, Kurt Mo- siejczuk, who put on a show that would put David Copperfield to shame. The high point of the party was the wild breaking of the pinata and of course, diving for the candy. After finishing the few last min- ute tests that our understanding teachers were kind enough to give us,the parties and elfing were a wel- come break to people who already had sugarplums dancing in their heads. (Above)Elaine Esper strings up one of the unsuspecting pinatas that will soon be defaced. 21 Feeding Time At The Zoo It has long been a tradition among students to complain about school food, but the kitchen staff does the best they can with what they ' ve got. Let ' s just hope that the saying, You are what you eat doesn ' t hold true at school. The cafeteria has different moods, which can be unfortunate for some people. For example, the student who either has a headache or needs to study an entire semester of biology in twenty minutes will not appreciate a jubilant chorus of Happy Birthday to you from one of the more enthusi- astic tables (usually filled with girls). These singers are usually told by a ta- ble of football players quite loudly to SHUT UP! , as they are trying to concentrate on their double lunches. As luck goes, the days when all is quiet on the lunch room front (which is not often) are the days when some poor kid drops his loaded, plastic tray with a resounding BANG in the middle of the floor. Of course, the echo of this humiliation is quickly replaced by the roaring applause of a standing ova- tion. Sometimes lunch isn ' t every- body ' s favorite period. What ' s the only difference between Westborough and some small hick town in Southern California? You guessed it; that unpredictable white stuff that falls from the sky. ..Snow. Up to the age of 10, it ' s a gift from God, a natural toy in which to throw, eat(when its not yellow), romp in, cre- ate dream forts, and glide over at 90 miles an hour. After that it takes on a new perspective. It is something which to shovel twice; once before the plow, and the second time after the plow inevitably comes and re-buries one ' s driveway. Snow is some thing to blow-dry and chisel off the car. It is also a parent ' s favorite excuse to why one should stay home on Friday night. When one says snow to the aver- age student, the immediate reaction is no school!! Scenario: Forecasters are predicting 5 feet, and one blows every- thing off and watches T.V. all night only to wake up late and find — black tar and warm sun. Then, there are those days when you wake up early, jump in the show- er, come out wide awa ke, refreshed, and one ' s little sister mumbles What ' s the matter with you-no school! . One crawls back into bed - a little damp. It ' s futile to try and deter- mine whether or not school is actually in session. The radio announcers, it seems, are always on ..and West Boylston . One usually remains clue- less till at least 20 minutes before 8:00. This year we have been particularly blessed with postponements during midyears, leaving us with even more time in which to put off studying ( there are no excuses for failing an exam having 5 days to look over mate- rial ) -and a white football season. To sum it all up - When You Least Ex- pect It, Expect It!!! 24 25 (Below)Brian Strong jammin at foot- ball practice. (Right)Sue Hall rehearses the French horn with the band. PRACTICES: What Price For Perfection? 3? We hear it everyday. Mrs. Howland comes over the loud speaker and starts reeling off announcements. Girls ' basketball practice has been changed to 5:00 today. Senior play practice from 7:00 to 10:00; band re- hearsal today after school for the con- cert tomorrow; boys ' freshmen bas- ketball will be at the junior high today at 4:00; concert choir rehearsal from 3:00 to... Sometimes they make your head spin. One might ask oneself, Are all these practices really worth the trou- ble? I mean, heck, I know right now I ' ll be warming the bench in Friday ' s game, anyways. As always, the stu- dents trample off to their practices, unquestioningly. It ' s two twenty-two and they haven ' t eaten since seven thirty when they grabbed a doughnut while running out of the house, claim- ing that there wasn ' t time for break- fast . During lunch, they were too busy cramming for their Biology II ' cat-skinning ' test to care much about eating. (Left)Of course there ' s always time for winding down as the soccer team demonstrates by their frisbee game. 27 Yes, even the chaperones can enjoy themselves as Mrs. Boyle (left) and Mr. Juszynski (below) demonstrate. Shakin ' All Night Long Dancing is said to be one of the best forms of aerobic exercise. It increases the circulation of blood, tones mus- cles, and depending on whom you ' re dancing with, it can make a person lose weight just from the sweat pour- ing from their palms. WHS dances, whether they be for- mal, semi-formal, or the habitual yet madcap stag bash , rate fairly high on the old student interest-activity meter. D.J. ' s spin their records to sell- out crowds, and chaperones do all that they can just to keep the extra multi- tudes out. If a passerby was to look beyond the steam-fogged windows of the lobby, he or she might think it was jello wres- tling night at Jim ' s Slam Dance Pal- ace. However, although dances may seem slightly untamed, things are kept well under control by the fearless (and crazy) chaperones. These adults must be given due credit for their time and willingness to lend a hand (or a wastebasket). Our dances are so much more than just a social gathering. They act as an opportunity to unwind, get down, and hopefully (for some) as a chance to get a little closer to some particuar member of the opposite sex. At such events, students display untapped energy that lasts long after the music stops. By the time the last slow dance is played, the desire for another dance to be scheduled is well implanted in the minds of many. Of course, there are also those people who each time regret coming and swear that they will never go to an- other dance again. It is true that good times are not guaranteed. The dance provides the opportunity for a good time, and then the dancers have to fend for their own fun. In general, ev- eryone fends pretty well. 29 WORKIN ' FOR A LIVING Being a student at WHS can get quite expensive. Just the bare necessi- ties, such as music tapes, weekend parties, clothes, dates, food, and cars can add up to enormous sums of mon- ey. Not many of us can count on much financial aid from home; parents who are willing to spend up to $45 per achievement test seem strangely re- luctant to pass out a whole lot of extra cash on the weekends. Most of us have found other ways to support our lifes- tyles however. In and around town, WHS students are working at many different jobs to earn money for the essentials of student life. Some of us have turned to burgers for bucks. Local people can enjoy fast foods at Wendy ' s produced by West- boro ' s own Mary Hesselton or Kim Cove. It makes it much easier for ev- eryone to digest their fries and fros- ties kno wing that they were prepared with loving care. Others have sought jobs at clothing, grocery, shoe, and drug stores. Shop- ping at CVS is always a treat when one can have Debi Concaugh, Dawn Sei- benbruner, Heidi Stewart, Tara La- Traverse, or Jenn Hopkins check out one ' s deodorant, hair spray, note- books (of course), and other personal items. Sheila Walsh, Pam Hemberger, Ann Metzger, Allyson Kruse, and Jen Hall work hard to keep Westboro ' s elementary tots looking fashionable at Raschel ' s children ' s clothing ware- house. Late night snacks at Abdow ' s after a flick at the Flick are pleasantly provided by waitresses such as Amy Burke, Aimee DesRosiers, Laurie Richards, Julie Townsend, and Rita Thacker. These places are obviously only a few where our student body can be found, but these are typical of the types of jobs that teenagers acquire. After school and summertime jobs have not only provided us with a means of making money but with a chance to have some fun as well. With Westborough youth on the work force, Wendy ' s drive-thru is an adventure in itself and shopping for zit cream has taken on new meaning at CVS. At Julio ' s Ken Valk (above) tries to make off with some goodies, but Glenn McLeod (right) concerns himself with fine foods. 30 ing As much as we hate to ad- mit it, the most important part of school is academics. Everything you do in school Randall Currie cautiously removes his books from his locker. Records goes on a record for every college admissions officer and prospective employer to leer at. Remember that E in College Reading? It ' s on your record. Goodbye Har- vard! When it comes to academ- ics there are two basic per- sonality types. The first is the person who does all his home- work, studies for gym tests, and owns stock in the Worcester Public Library. The second type never does homework, and casually glances at their friends ' notes for the first time ten minutes before the final. Although these are the extremes, most people tend toward one or the other. The eagerness to gra- duate provides a common ground enabling both types to overcome differences and party together eight hours after that last bell rings every Friday. (Directly Below) Mr. Sharpe ' s Fan Club. (Far Below) Pam Hemberger and Amy Pendergast are dazed and confused. Day In Day Out Students go through their academic life with hoping for a fire drill. However, most of the eyes one point of view: us and the teacher. We who sit stray to the clock and follow the second hand for in desks mentally calculating our averages, and the bulk of the class. Gathering up some mental the person who struts and frets all period in strength, you toss out a few questions to the ex- front of the class and is totally forgotten during pectant masses. No answer. Maybe they ' re all looking at the spot on your No, not unless we have to do the dreaded oral shirt. Maybe... Time ticks by, notes are taken, report that day. Picture this. You are in the front never to be understood again, the bell rings and of a putrid gray room facing ranks of glazed eyes life goes on. Seriously though, the real question which wander around the room. O.K., perhaps isn ' t the teacher ' s perspective ,but the students: some of these eyes are feverishly reading over the the delve into the unknown, the unexplored. Well, incredibly informative class evacuation plan — perhaps it ' s better left a mystery. Put Hour Goggles On! I Below ) Debbie Powell con- templates the Laws of Ph s- For most people, academics is a part of life that they just don ' t like to advertise. Everyone does it although no one will admit it. With labs however, there is no way to be discreet. Whether you are in the middle of a lab, or have just completed one, you are easily picked out of the crowd. Take for example, the language lab. One can ' t hide the fact that they are engaged in academic lab work, with their big green cushy earphones and long metal mike wrapped around their head. Most students can ' t deny that they are caught in the act-unless they play it cool and try to pretend they are really tuning out on old-fashioned walk- men. There is no getting around at least one chemis- try or biology lab. They leave you trying to cover up the deep, red goggle mark cut into your face, or with a funny scent of formaldehyde or some sulfuric substance. You try to sneak into your next class subtly, and when the person in front of you turns around and asks you, Hey, what ' s that funny smell? , you smile and shrug, clueless. 37 A Day In Ghe Cife Of JOE C RA H6E C R 6:30 BzzzzzzzzWHAP! 6:45 Joe Ranger crawls out of bed and into the shower. 7:20 Joe runs out to the bus stop. 7:30 Joe is still waiting for the bus. Senior Survivalists (right) can ' t make it on their own. ' Ready Por Che Puture With the newly added seventh period, more stu- dents than ever can now take certain classes that help prepare them for what the immediate future entails. Courses such as Home Economics, Senior Survival, and Child Development teach the stu- dents the more practical aspects of life that will be necessary for independent living. Senior Survival has generally in the past gotten a bad rap for being a sleeze course . Sure, cook- ing cinnamon rolls for a midyear may not be considered as difficult as a calculus exam. How- ever, learning skills such as cooking and sewing is harder than many people think (or will admit) until they try it themselves. Next year when some students are out of school and on their own, and all of the buttons are pop- ping off their only shirt, they ' ll appreciate the extensive training that they received in Senior Survival. When they look into the refrigerator and see nothing except for a few sparse string beans and a can of tomato soup, they ' ll wish for the exquisite entrees prepared last year in Home Ec. Cooking and sewing are not the only tasks learned in the course. The students are also taught how to hold a budget, balance a checkbook, and wash and iron clothes. As exciting as all this may seem ,the students are learning valuable skills which pertain to the real world. Child Development is a class taken by many for a variety of reasons. Some sign up to take the course because they are interested in entering into the field of child education; others because they wish to someday be good parents. There are also a few who take it because they enjoy dressing up a hard boiled egg and calling it their baby. Child Development instructs students to under- stand and get along with kids. That can be helpful to anyone at anytime. Because of the addition of the seventh period, students are now exposed to new classes which are unique from the three R ' s: reading , ' riting, and ' rithmatic. Not only do these courses offer instruction on a variety of topics, but they also offer to students a break from the monotonous schooling they may be accustomed to. 40 (Below )Mr. Hayes makes an example of Gina Ritacco to demonstrate the right way to smile. Tjhc Arts: Ury it, You ' ll £ike It! What is art? What is drama? Are they the titles of some obscure poems from freshman Eng- lish? Are they perhaps questions that philosophy majors ponder for fun on the weekends? Or are they courses that Westborough High School of- fers? Yes, that ' s right, there are students that take these courses here at W.H.S. And strangely enough, contrary to popular opinion, these stu- dents work. Have you ever tried to make a model of an animal out of wire and sticky pieces of paper? Have you ever tried to memorize four pages of dialogue during lunch? That is real work. How- ever, the students that take these classes are very lucky. Not only do they work hard, but they truly enjoy their work (usually). We all have to take science, English, math, history, gym; but these students have chosen to take either art or drama courses. When a student takes a Fine Arts class it ' s because he wants to, not because he has to. When you walk by the art rooms or see a drama class in the auditorium, the students and usually the teacher are smiling. Why are they smiling? Well, funny things happen in these classes. Ever wonder why some of the art students have clay stuck to their faces, or stained hands? Ever won- der if Mr. Sharpe actually tells those incredibly inane jokes in drama class? Believe me, you don ' t know what you ' re missing. So the next time you ' re filling out courses to take, either in college or high school, be nice to yourself and round it out with a little art. They may be off the charts in the sense that they don ' t go on your report card, but, they are; nonetheless, important. In- volvement in clubs provides an ideal opportunity to learn by doing, an ex- perience not available within the con- straints of the academic classroom. Or, you may explore an area which isn ' t included in the academic cur- riculum, yearbook for example. At the start of this school year, for many of the traditional clubs the fu- ture looked dim. With the addition of the new seventh hour and the abol- ishment of the activity period, when would organizations have time to meet? Well, loyal club members wouldn ' t let their clubs die; they just compromised a bit. Often this meant after school get-togethers, or limiting meetings to the bi-monthly activity period. Let it be remembered though that the clubs and organizations of Westborough High School continue to thrive, with or without a daily activ- ity period. Another member of the video club, Dan Flavin learns the basica of filming. ressure; Stress. ..we ' ve all felt it: that indescribable confusion created when one ' s mind overrides the body ' s basic desire to choke the living daylights out of some idiot who desperately needs it. You know how it is. It ' s one of those days. You spent all night typing a twenty page paper, and this morning your dog reminds you that you forgot to let him out when he uses your paper in place of his favorite tree. PRES- SURE! But your teacher doesn ' t believe you. Oh, sure, like you drew those huge dark circles under your eyes and overdosed on No-Doze just to fake him out. Nontheless, your teacher is kind enough to give you an E. But wait! That ' s not all. You completely forgot about your oral report, not that it would have been humanly possible for you to do it anyway. And, of course, it ' s a major grade. As you feel your hair turn gray and ulcers instantly form on the caffeine-induced knots in your stomach, you try to imagine what it will be like graduating in the 21st century. Yes, this is a sob story of the average student, but that is exactly what needs to be understood by teachers and parents from time to time. The best student-teacher relationships come from the teacher treating the students as busy people (with other classes besides their own) and not by belittling their roles in life and underestimating their responsibilities. For the most part, teachers understand these things and respect the various pressures on students, and it has to go both ways. Teachers are allowed to also have their sob stories about correcting exams and getting in grades on time, besides going home to being a parent or trying to run a home, pay bills, etc. Better understanding can reduce everyone ' s pressures. SCAT which stands for Students Communicating with the Administra- tion and Teachers, is a group which discusses the problems within our school. (SCAT reps are Tracy LaBrec- que, Heather Candon, Caroline Judge, Jen Rochette, Monica Pow- ers, Jon McSweeney, and Rachel Ir- win.) SCAT meets once a month with an informal get-together where they discuss ways to improve communica- tions between teachers and students. The SAC to the School Committee presents the ideas and complaints, many times from SCAT, to the School Committee. This year our Student Advisory Council Monica Powers, Tracy LaBrecque, Karen McLaugh- lin, Shelley Manifold, and Caitlin Mor- iarity assisted in the formation of our bi-monthly activity period, allowing clubs and activities to meet with greater ease. The regional SAC Advisory Mem- bers, Monica Powers and Jon McSweeney once a month work with committees of other school reps to discuss common ideas or complaints. This year, letters to the senators were written to pass the new School Im- provement Council. SIC Reps Jon McSweeney and Jen Berquist are finding ways to improve our school. 48 Regional SCAT Members: Monica Powers and Jon McSweeney. Christine and I were cer- tain that this would mean the end of the yearbook. But, luckily our eter- nally optimistic business editor had the wonderful idea of a yearbook study. Every other day the yearbook staff meets during a regular class hour. It works out well, (we think, any- way) since our staff has the option of coming to the yearbook room if they have yearbook work to do, or attend- ing open study if they have home- (Above) Robyn Alie is intrigued as she learns the basics from Amy Burke. The editors also appreci- ate it since it decreases the amount of time we have to stay after school. Nonetheless, you will often find one of us in room 301 after hours. Have you ever driven by the school late some night and seen a solitary light gleaming out of the corner classroom on the third floor? It simply means that Chris and I (and anyone else we can coerce into staying) are rushing to complete last minute work on our deadline. The success of these bands — Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Marching Band — is made possi- ble through the hardwork and pa- tience of our Band Director, Mr. Al- ton Baggett and all the talented musi- cians at WHS. These bands are a source of entertainment and are real spirit raisers. This year ' s Marching Band, led by Drum Major Valerie Smack, had a successful season and was really a lot of fun. The band made the foot- ball games by playing the familiar tunes of California and On Broad- way in the background. Although half the band were freshmen, and there was only a handful of dedicated seniors, somehow it turned out al- right. The Concer t Band, made up of stu- dents from every class, now meets every day. The Concert Band puts on a festive Christmas Concert and an excellent Spring Concert each year. The Concert Band members conduct an annual solo and ensemble con- sert. The extremely talented students who wish to show off for a night par- ticipate in this terrific performance. Another really excellent band is the Jazz Band. It is now an everyday class since there is no longer an activity period. Just for the record, the three singing groups at W.H.S. are: Choral Ensemble, consist- ing of freshmen and sophomore girls; Mixed Chorus, made up of junior and senior girls and freshmen through senior guys; and Concert Choir, a small group of selected singers from Mixed Chorus. Every year, the Mixed Chorus trav- els to another state (or country) to compete in a music festival. They have always returned with a number of medals. Each spring, the Concert Choir puts on a Madrigal Dinner where singers in Medieval costumes entertain guests while dining. The Choral Ensemble has the distinction of opening the winter and spring con- certs held each year. Through AFS, she went to Canberra, Australia, where the kan- garoos roam. ' Their school system is different from ours. There is a cre- ative energy contributed by most of the students. It ' s more of a relaxed atmosphere. She stated how the schools worked on an open campus basis, much like the colleges in the United States. The city itself is not polluted or overpopulated, a nice change from the U.S. In her free time she went to parks, saw some of the Australian culture, and learned to ski. Joanna was an ex- change student through American Field Service, which took her to a six- ty acre dairy farm called Keta. She lived with a family consisting of three girls and one boy. They are a hard working, farm oriented family. The jobs on the farm were many and nev- er ending. Milking thirty four cows at 7:00am and 6:00pm, shearing sheep and heading them to the mountains for the summer took a week. The work would go well into the night since the sun only set for three hours maximum, so it was never very dark. Their eating habits are different since they eat four meals a day. Lamb is a very popular meal and, as a special, whale meat is served. Milk is fresh from the cow. All in all she had a good trip, despite a language barrier. I ' m glad I got the opportunity to go to Iceland. DRE CKIP (Above left)The Coca-Cola Company in Reyk- javik, Iceland. (Directly above) Joanna gets a look at haying season in Iceland. Of course, these teams are usually the ones that do not win as of- ten as they would like. How- ever, winning is far from ev- erything. There are sports Well-balanced punter Paul Bielski goes to work. records to break that deal with things other than vic- tories and championships. Being a member of a team is one of the best opportuni- ties to start new friend- ships. When a group of peo- ple work together for a few months out of the year, sharing common goals and interests, new friends just come naturally. There are inevitable good times and laughs at practices and on bus rides. In addition to the fun aspect, playing a sport is an excellent way to feel good about yo urself and your achievements. It is a chance to set new goals and break your own personal re- cords. Although the Rangers couldn ' t quite pull it all together this year, there were talented players in ev- ery position, and the forces are gradually being rebuilt for another soon-to-come Superbowl Cham- pionship. The team would like to thank Coach Gebo and all agreed that Coach Bliss was an excellent and entertaining addition to the team. As for the JV team, due to a technicality, their record was dis- counted. If the games had count- ed, their record would have been 3-5-2, as shown, but unfortu- nately, it resulted that they only won one game, and lost the rest. The next two games were ties, but from then on, the victo- ries started, even with some key players warming the bench in Hudson. Occasionally, the team celebrated victories with a sleeze practice the next day, in- cluding ice cream and games like Red Rover , until this became too hazardous. The team ' s undefeated record continued with the help of Megan Fay, who played goalie in place of Mary Beth Domenico against Clin- ton. The victories ended with the disappointing Milford night game when new playing conditions worked against the team (espe- cially Jen!). The team never lost spirit, and they finished off the season with several wins to be- come the Midland League Champs. Westboro was clearly a defensive team with Brian Nash, Rob True, Carl Joeckel, and Chad Christie as fullbacks, and with Paul Martino in net. At times the Westboro offense was explosive with Jon Steen as goal leader. A serious injury prevented senior captain Craig Martin from playing in 6 games which deeply hurt the team. It was another year of hard work for the girls ' soccer team who may have only won one game, but had several near misses. It did not help any that several key players were lost to sickness and injury over the sea- son. Their record, however, was strong enough to beat out Hudson and to take fifth place in the Mid- land League. The team, led by captains Ka- ren McLaughlin and Jean Pierson, was an odd combination of veter- ans and newcomers. Throughout the season, Westborough played mostly a defensive game, which was strengthened by Jean Pier- son at sweeper and stopper Moni- ca Powers, a first year player who used her athletic talents to be- come a dominant force in our de- fense. In goal was another new- comer, Erika Reents, who played well for the team. Senior Dawn Seibenbruner was an indispensi- ble fullback, along with Shannon Seile (when she could make it through a game without falling down). The midfield was held down by Karen McLaughlin, who not only supported the defense but was this year ' s lead scorer. Kathy Legs Cullen and Amy Cox, who was sidelined towards the end of the season due to illness(?). Freshmen stand-outs were Ally- son Morse and Chris Norkevicius, who kept alive the age-old tradi- tion of scoring on the wrong net. Boys ' Cross Country They ' re Still Standing This year ' s boys ' cross-country team had a tremendous amount of energy and promise. The most memorable event of the season took place at the meet against Hopkinton, when captains Mark Stevens and Tim Goland led the team into victory by taking the first six places. Although the Hop- kinton meet was their only win of the season, it will not be forgotten by Westborough ' s own. This year ' s team has displayed a great deal of effort and potential, parti- culary on the part of freshmen members such as Brad Masters, Joe Miller and Casey Aylward. While their record was not a good one, the season was a lot of fun and now that Pete McClymer has learned the courses, he is looking forward to becoming captain next year. Although several players had to serve time in detention hall, the team and Miss Corcoran managed a 10-4 record, placing them sec- ond in the league, and qualifying them for districts for the first time in four years. Many interesting and unique experiences added to the character of the season. The grand finale was their only district game, where they scored more points but ended up losing the match three games to two to Newton Catholic. As a show of their good sportsmanship, the team members decided not to ask for the bus shift back, but instead cruised home with Mom and Dad. Miss McSweeney and the JV team showed fine spirit and had some very promising players. Al- though next year ' s team is sure to do well, the intensity and domina- tion will not be the same without the character of the departing seniors and ringleaders: Sheila Walsh (MVP) and Joanna Tracy (co-captains), Robyn Alie, Jen Hall, Mary Hesselton, Sue Gillis, Tracy LaBrecque, and Cheryl Rich. Individually, however, everyone on the team improved considerably from last year with the help of two new coaches, Noreen Johnson and Liz MacDougall. The team may not have won any meets as of yet, but they cer- tainly kept doing their best and kept their spirits up at the same time. There were plenty of laughs during girl talks with coaches Noreen and Liz. Favorite team pasttimes were impromptu runs through the McDonald ' s drive- thru whenever possible (before, during, and after practices or meets!) and playing with color- forms. The year wasn ' t all fun and games of course. The coaches kept the team busy in the weight room, and as a result, all of our WHS gymnasts agree: We may not be the best team, but we ' ve got to be the strongest. Ice Hockey The Main Attraction When you think of the West- boro High School hockey team, you immediately think of a bunch of great guys playing hockey in a way which is exciting to both the fans and the players themselves. It isn ' t until you walk into North Star that the realization hits you that you ' re stuck in a cigar-smell- ing, freezing rink for the next two hours with a bunch of other screaming fans. It ' s a bit confusing at first. The puck moves so fast it ' s hard to know who ' s in possession of it-if anyone. Unless the players stand at the exact angle so that you can read both the name and number off their shirts, it ' s pretty tough figuring out who ' s who. Some- times, it seems as if the best part of the game is when Zamboni comes out to clean the ice. Karl Johnson, Steve Tepper, and Kevin Grant led the victorious team to districts and states. Even with such great leadership, the team wasn ' t just a bunch of indi- viduals, but rather a group of ath- letes striving for team unity. The hockey team would like to thank the fans for all of their amazing spirit and support. The 1986-87 team was a group with an abundance of tal- ent and an abundance of individ- ual personalities who, for the most part, got along really well together. Co-captains were Me- gan Fay, Monica Powers, and Chris Judge (Juez), who kept the team morale up with impromptu spirit-raisers like Megan ' s sponta- neous break dance circle at prac- tice. The favorite team pasttime was the celebrated busride sing- a-long (when we weren ' t threat- ened by our bus driver). Another favorite pasttime was seeing who would bring the wrong colored shirt to the games. There was al- ways at least one person who ei- ther had only one sneaker(Kim) , or no sneakers(Megan), or the wrong shirt(Erika Reek Reents). Although the Rangers might not have been the most fashionable team on the court, they were usually the best. Team centers forwards and key rebounders were the tall and tenacious Megan Fay and Kim McLean. Forwards under the hoop included the talented juniors Rachel Ballard, Heather Hez Candon, and Kerry Matthews. At guard forward position were the fiesty Erika Reents and freshman bullseye-shooter Jen Gorak. Monica Tasmanian Devil and Reach In Powers brought the ball up the court as the team ' s fast-moving point guard with back-ups from Jody Thurber and Judy Bond. Congratulations to Coach Young and a team of good friends and good athletes. Congratulations also to a super JV season. Mr. Mongeau ' s team unfortunately broke a long-time no-loss tradition but remained the same great quality team that Mr. Mongeau is used to. Co-captains were Lori Riedel, Kate Whitin, and Amy McAuliffe. Good luck next year to the future varsity team. Boys ' Basketball Close But No Cigar The 1986-87 Varsity Boys ' Hoop season wasn ' t as rewarding as the Rangers were expecting. Despite a number of close games, the team shared many good times. Senior leadership included Co-captains Chris 19 ' 9 Gorak, and Keith The Butler Taylor, and Karl Yokel Joeckel, with help from Brian jello Chouinard. When perusing talent for next year, one must not over- look the abilities of Chris Pearl Devaux, Mike Roons Burns, Jeff Top Gun Galicki, Matt Lead Tuttle, Dave Fake Shot Awad and Paul Janna Jankaus- kas. Some of the seasons more memorable events were when Carl Joeckel told the Coach, after he had left the room for a minute, that they had shot the eight free throws in a row which they were supposed to. Another highlight was Keith Taylor ' s half court Hail Mary shot in the Holy Name game. This year was not an un- successful year for the Rangers in terms of talent, but luck just didn ' t seem to be on their side. Good luck to next year ' s team! Different schools may have the same types of sports teams, clubs, or student ac- tivities, but the wide variety of people and personalities at this school insure that this record is one of a kind. Therefore, the pages that Buddies Lisa DeArmond and Michelle Gregoriou hang out in the lobby. follow are this years ' person- al records of WHS. Meet the latest arrivals to our new ad- ministration and faculty, and find out more about a few of our newer teachers through our exclusive inter- views. If you seek even more excitement, turn to the stu- dent pictures. Find your own, circle all your friends, and cross out your enemies. It ' s your book. Also, the senior section offers a chance to take a good look at some faces that will not be around next year. Finally, just for fun try to interpret a senior grid, or look for your initials in someone else ' s. If they ' re not there, put them in yourself. Remember, it ' s your book. Dedication Mr. Mewhiney On behalf of the Class of 1987, the Year- book Staff would like to dedicate this book to Mr. Joseph R. Mewhiney. For twenty -five years, he has been more than an athletic di- rector and an assistant principal. He has been a loyal friend to us all; an administra- tive adult that people feel they can approach and talk to. Through his years of dedication to Westborough High School, Joe Mewhiney has been a key figure in boosting and main- taining the spirit and morale of our school. Mr. Mewhiney ' s commitment to his posi- tion as athletic director has led him to win many awards. Just this year, he was award- ed the Central Massachusetts Athletic Direc- tor of the Year award. Mr. Mewhiney has always been respected by teachers and stu- dents alike. Recently, he gave up his job as Athletic Director in order to put all of his time and effort into being Assistant Princi- pal. His humble devotion has been greatly appreciated by everyone — especially the sen- ior class. Once again, we would like to thank you, Mr. Mewhiney, for all of the hard work and time that you ' ve put into helping us through our high school years. Love, The Class of 1987 97 The New Administration Meet Dr. Holland Since this is his first year here, we thought it would be interesting to interview Dr. William Holland, the new Superintendent of Schools. Two members of the Yearbook Staff asked Dr. Holland about his various reactions and opinions of Westboro. YB: What were your reactions to Westboro when you first came here? Were you in any ways sur- prised or disappointed? WH: Westboro was everything I expected. I haven ' t been surprised or disappointed. My experience has prepared me. I was Superin- tendent in Narragansett as well as Lunenberg. I was Assistant Su- perintendent in Dartmouth and School Administrator in Newton. People are extremely apprecia- tive of service here. This is not true everywhere. They hold high expectations. Teachers here are highly professional. They ' re part of an excellent tradition. One disappointment has been the weather. I was expecting a more severe winter. YB: What do you do in your lei- sure time? WH: I have very little leisure time. I ' m a superintendent, a father, and a husband. I used to enjoy nautilus, but lately I jog and go for walks with my wife to relax. I ' m (Front Row) Eileen Gress — Assistant Superintendent, William Holland — Superintendent. (Back Row) Earl Baker — Director of Guidance, Vernon Willard — Business Manager. A 98 an avid golfer, but I haven ' t played much lately. I also do a lot of read- ing. YB: What is your favorite movie? WH: I liked Gone with the Wind and a movie that didn ' t get enough recognition, The Color Purple. I also enjoy Disney mov- ies. Song of the South brought back many childhood memories. YB: What do you think of the school food? WH: I can ' t comment on the food — I haven ' t had the opportu- nity to sample it to a great degree. I like the tacos at Hastings, though. ..and I like the Fales ' piz- za. YB: How do you like the High School ' s physical appearance, in general? WH: The High School ' s physical appearance is a strength. It ' s clean. There ' s a sense of pride. Smoking leaves its mark, but it could be worse... or better. The school has a sense of warmth. Or a scale of one ten, the school has an appearance of about a seven. We can make it nicer and more aesthetically beautiful. YB: Here ' s a thought question for you... Do you do your superin- tendent duties in accordance with your daily horoscope? WH: No, I don ' t. At times, I might be accused of it. Probably I should ponder that as a new approach. When all else fails, I ' ll use that tactic. I was born on April 20 — that ' s on the cusp between Tau- rus and Aries. YB: What would you do at a yel- low light? WH: Now, I would stop because I learn from my mistakes. I ' m very cautious in terms of traffic. It scares me to death to know that people think they know what they ' re doing when they drink and drive. It only takes one mistake. YB: Who is your favorite group or singer? WH: I like the creative genius of Lionel Richie. Maureen Zolubos — Principal Joe Mewhiney — Assistant Principal To the Class of 1987: It has been a pleasure to work with all of you over the past four years. Your days in high school pass by very quickly, and now you will step out into the world. You will be on your own for the first time. There are so many great things to do, see, and accomplish! Take advantage of everything that is offered, and particularly, never stop learn- ing. Good Luck to All, Coach Mewhiney Members of the Class of 1987: Four years of high school are over. For some of you, they have been the best; for others, they have been the worst. I have only known you for this one year at Westborough High School; your last and my first. From the opening assembly on September 9, 1 986, at the begin- ning of the school year, I knew that the class of ' 87 would be special to me. You will always by my first class to graduate from Westborough High School. The future stretches before you, uncertain but hopeful. There can be no sadness now. The Sen- ior year is a time of anticipation of things to come, and then good- byes. Congratulations to each of you. Sincerely, Maureen H. Zolubos The School Committee(Front Row) Karen Ingerman, Sheila Ci- zauskas, Joan Bentley. (Back Row) Dennis O ' Neil, Donna White- side, J.J. Malone. William Walsh— Athletic Director 99 Too often, students misun- derstand the lives of their teachers. Why does it always shock someone who sees an adult from school at a foot- ball game in jeans, sitting with his or her three kids, looking like a parent. It is hard to picture them any- where but in front of a class- room, wearing teacher clothes. Many students can not grasp that the faculty do not sleep overnight at their Faculty desks and that they eat food that comes from places be- sides the cafeteria. It is im- portant to realize that these peoples ' lives do not revolve totally around the school and that they have their unique styles and interests. To illustrate this point, and in keeping with the theme of the book, the year- book staff has taken a poll of the teachers ' favorite tunes, since music is such a big part of personal style and taste. Hopefully, this will change the image of the WHS staff member as being a perma- nent fixture of the school ' s corridors. Under each teach- er ' s name, we have given his or her favorite album or art- ist. You can tell a lot about a person by the kind of music he or she likes, as you will see. Prior to Westborough, she taught high school in such places as Canada, Boston, and New York, and has also graced the faculty roster at several junior colleges. Thus, she has had experience at a variety of levels and in several environ- ments. The suburban area and small size of WHS make it the most desirable location for her. She prefers a school which is not overly crowded or contusing! Mrs. Gore does find grati- fication in teaching, but. as with any job, there are frus- trations. She recalls one ex- perience which occurred dur- ing her first year of teaching. In the midst of conjugating Spanish verbs she noticed one of her students had com- pletely lost interest: he had fallen asleep. When Mrs. Gore politely asked another student to wake him up, he, just as politely replied, You put him to sleep; you wake him up. Born and raised in Massa- chusetts, Mr. Vital attended Bridgewater State and North Eastern University, where he earned his under- graduate and graduate de- grees, respectively. His gra- duate fellowship was re- ceived from Louisiana State University. Before coming here, Mr. Vital taught in sev- eral other Massachusett towns as well as at the American Embassy School in Bolivia, South America. Sur- prisingly enough, he also used to teach courses in his- tory, sociology and econom- ics. Mr. Vital regards West- boro ' s computer department highly and finds the faculty and students to be ' top- flight ' . Anyone who has ever taken a computer class can verify that it can quickly give you high blood pressure, but Mr. Vital always seems to keep his cool. Mr. Vital defi- nitely adds to the quality of this school. Zwicker Most Spirited: Karen McLaughlin Bruce Ledoux SENIORS: Breaking Traditions There can be no doubt that the Class of 1987 is a unique one. Therefore, we felt that the senior section of this yearbook should be unique; breaking the mold of past years. It ' s always hard for people to accept change, but we have taken the risk this year because we think it is an improvement. We have added some new superlatives and killed off some previous ones, and the superlatives have also been cleverly interwoven into the section. It is true that grids have been shortened slightly, but this allows for a different look: the 1987 look. Isn ' t that special? Besides all of this, something has been done in this book that has never been done before(at least not in Westboro). We have expanded the senior class picture onto a three page fold-out!
