Webster calls a circle a group of people sharing a common interest. It ' s easy to see how this definition applies to our school. We have all shared a common high school experience. However, there are differing elements which have made up this experience. These inner circles are all independent, vital groups and their actions create the pulse of our school. The first smaller circle is the faculty. You can see their circle on Monday mornings in the teacher ' s room. They sit happily eating doughnuts and talking of their latest game of Trivial Pursuit. Once the teachers leave this room, though, they involve themselves in other circles. The next circle is sports and activities. Whether we huddle in a football game or debate the question of nuclear war, we all become more aware of the world in which we live. The students make up the largest circle in the school. We have our friendship, our language, and our own style. We are a circle shaded by many individual colors. At eight o ' clock each weekday morning, these three circles join together to form the large circle, our school. We chose the circle to symbolize the unity of the school. We are individuals, but we are all striving for similar goals. In these ways, the circle seemed to best represent this unity. IN THE SPO Everyone enjoys a turn in the spot- light, and the 1985 Junior Talent Show was no exception. The show was run by our four M.C. ' s, Doug Hanchett, Ed Hutner, Darrin Mac- Connell, and Todd Salmonson. Musical highlights of the evening i ncluded Irene Vail, Marianne Neil- sen, and the Westboro Blues, not to mention Joe Federman and the Evolution. At right, Erin Sullivan and Stacey Guagnini wait back- stage before their dance act ( Jun- gle Love ) with Penny Smith. As for comedy, both junior girls and guys provided plenty of that. Caro- lyn Breen (center right) does her imitation of our favorite chemistry teacher, in the junior girl ' s act What a Wonderful World. The junior guys, however, were led by Tom Schaefer in a chorus of What I Like About You , then proceeded to show us new mean- ings of the word shape-up. All in all, the talent show demonstrated the hidden talent of Westboro stu- dents. The M.C. ' s really get into the act! FORMING A NEW CIRCLE Yearbook is one of the smal ler cir- cles that make up the school. This group began to come together over a year ago, after many meet- ings and discussions. Eventually, we decided on our theme, Circles. To unite the group, and to raise money, we had a car- wash bakesale last June. It was a great success, even though we did eat most of the cookies. We ' ve also planned for a group trip to Boston. We had many ideas for this year- book, and we hope they ' ve worked out well. There are a lot of people who deserve a great deal of thanks. First, our business edi- tor, Gretchen Reents ( Miss Juice ), who sold all the ads ahead of time and relentlessly filled the juice machine. Also, Matt Swett and Kristin Macek, photo editors, who ' ve done a terrific job taking circular pictures; and our art staff, Ed Turner, Michelle Baliunas, Steph Foulke, and Jon Pehl, for their absolutely fantastic artwork. Finally, thanks to Mr. Kaplan, who ' s kept us running around in circles. Thanks to the entire staff for working so hard!! Lynne and Sue 4 Cv Life at Westboro High often goes in Students at each stage are easily identified by attitude and appearance. For example, the average student on a Monday morn- ing is not too wide awake. Most of us are recovering from an exhausting weekend and we need to catch up on our sleep. Scott Smith takes a short cat nap in above right picture. By Wednesday, most students have revived themselves and can manage a pretty smile like Penny Pano ' s, (far left). Others seem to be a little bored. D ina Baretti is a good example of this. HHhh However, when Friday finally ar- rives after a long week, a bizarre transformation occurs; students begin to act rather strangely. Ex- haustion and boredom are re- placed by hyperactivity. Kelly Mc- Namara pops unexpectedly in front of our lens in the far left pic- ture. Darrin MacConnell has dressed for a night out on the town, and Andy Foster can only stare blankly at the camera. At any time of the week, Westboro High school students are definitely interesting. TOP HATS AND SKIRTS The night of May 18 arrived and the long-awaited Junior Prom final- ly came. We all made many prep- arations for this big event. Girls put their dresses on layaway in No- vember while the guys strolled into Mr. Tux on May 15. Many of us made dinner reservations at Du- ca ' s, some at the Honolulu, while others lounged by the pool. After dinner, we all went back to the high school lobby and danced to the tunes of Down East. Girls took off their shoes and guys loosened their cummerbunds. By ten o ' clock we all gathered around the foun- tain to quench our thirst and watch the picking of the court. This year we had both a King and a Queen. Joe McGrady was chosen as King and Carol Burman became our Queen. The night ' s festivities be- gan to wind down and it was time for the romantic theme song. Even though the band didn ' t know What I Like About You, Ed Hutner saved the night with the ca- sette version. We all left our Junior Prom on an upbeat note and with many good memories. 10 A SPECIAL DEDICA TION The class of 1986 would like to toke this opportunity to thank our princi- pal, Mr. Vail for his dedication to Westboro High School. As principal, he has been responsible for growth in the music and athletic programs. Mr. Vail has also maintained high standards in academics. His encour- agement of clubs has given the stu- dents a better understanding of the world around them. He has played a key role in contributing to the stu- dents ' complete and well-rounded education. For this reason, we are saying a special thank-you to Mr. Vail. V (J 0 17 FACULTY IN THE TEACHER ' S ROOM Slowly, the teachers straggled into the Faculty Room. One by one they found a comfortable chair and settled down for a short nap before the eight o ' clock bell rang. Just as they began to doze, Mr. Kaplan burst into the room. The teachers sat up abruptly and rubbed their eyes, trying to focus on his bright green sweater. Mr. Kaplan declared he had heard a wonderful joke over the weekend which he would like to share with everyone. He ignored the grunts and started to describe in minute detail a barroom scene. At first, the teachers listened attentively. They sat with their hands folded, and every so often they nodded their heads. But as Mr. Kaplan ' s voice started to grate on Mrs. Boyle ' s nerves, she searched for something else to keep her busy. She hoisted her rather large black purse onto her lap. Flipping open the flap, she plunged her hand deep into its black depths. She just knew she had a Cert. As Mrs. Boyle continued her search, other teachers became restless. Mr. Markvenas rapped his pencil on the table a few times, and Mr. Cerasoli who recognized the rhythm started to sing the opening bars of Hello, Dolly . Across the table, Mr. Heckman passed a confidential note to Mr. Scenna. Sneakily, Mr. Scenna opened the folded piece of paper. He smiled devilishly and passed the note onto Mr. Vital. The three men looked at one another and giggled uncontrollably. Some teachers were not so lively. Mr. Pappazizis rested his head on his hand and licked the corner of his moustache. Mr. LaBrie found a tag on the inside of his jacket and read its cleaning instructions in all six languages. And Mr. Trahan doodled on the edge of a student ' s essay. After seeing her friend ' s pictures of a Christmas tree and flying saucer, Mrs. Morrel felt she had every right to make out her grocery list. Mr. Kaplan droned on. Mr. Sharpe whipped out a piece of paper and eagerly asked Mr. Juszunski if he wanted to play Hangman. But Mr. Sharpe tore up the paper when Mr. J. used the word Shorty . Other teachers blew their noses, reapplied lipstick or corrected exams. The hands of the clock ticked closer to 8:00 AM. Finally, Mr. Kaplan came to the punchline. He was in the middle of the last sentence when Mrs. Boyle shouted, I found my Cert! The other teachers, seeing it was almost time to start the schoolday, picked up their brief cases and canvas bags. As the bell rang, they all headed out the door. Mr. Kaplan promised he would finish his joke at the lunch table. 18 ■ To the Class of 1986: Thoughts of circles: Doughnut holes; circumference; radius; points equidistant from the center; Town rotary; rotary in front of school. Pebbles in water and ever-widening concentric cir- cles; and the circle of friends, too, is ever-widening. Go to Fales or Hastings, become tangent at Arm- strong. Arrive at the High School — four classes and again a widen- ing of the circles of friends, both peer and faculty. The circles contract: Senior Pow- er. Our Senior Play. The Yearbook staff — running around in circles meeting deadlines! Our Gradu- ation on June 1 — the closest cir- cle of all. Then the circles will expand to include jobs, further education, new friends. May the new circles be both rewarding and fulfilling, but, if sometimes restrictive and difficult, perhaps the optimist ' s view of the lowly doughnut will help to keep a positive out look for new circles to conquer: As you ramble on through Life, Brother, Whatever be your goal. Robert Vail Principal TO: THE CLASS OF 1986 It has been a pleasure for me to work with this year ' s Senior Class over the past two years. As Acting Assistant Principal, I have taken on the task of my two jobs (Coordinator of Physical Edu- cation, Health and Athletics also) with the same enthusiasm and concern that Mr. Kirby always showed for his students. Best of Luck to all members of the class of 1986! Coach Mewhiney THE CENTER CIRCLE After twenty years as Superin- tendent of Schools in Westbor- ough, Dr. Edward Kelleher is retir- ing. Over his many years as Super- intendent he has overseen many improvements in the Westbor- ough school system. During his ad- ministration, the present Senior High School and the Hastings Ele- mentary School were built, as well as an addition to the Junior High School. Many new programs have been introduced at the High School, such as new athletic pro- grams, the AP program, a comput- er education program, SCAT, and departmentalization. The guid- ance and pupil personnel system has been greatly expanded. The school budgeting system and the teacher evaluation have been rec- ognized by the Department of Edu- cation. As he leaves the Westbor- ough school system for retire- ment, we would like to express our gratitude for all he has done for us. (left) — the impossible quest for the better student! 32 It is the activities which take place after 1 :44 which really i cement the bonds of the school. Whether it be marching band or volleyball, sports and activities form the larger circle of the school, uniting freshmen through seniors into one group. Clubs are especially popular with freshmen. This may be due to the fact that an AFS meeting is much more attractive prospect than the horrors of homeroom. However, by sophomore and junior year, students have discovered much more — shall we say — creative methods of escaping homeroom, and spend much of each activity hanging out in the auditorium, the gym, or on the balconies. But with the close of the junior year, kids seem to rediscover clubs like Morpheus and Model Congress. The threat of an empty college application provides the incentive this time, and seniors are devoted club members, on paper at Athletics are part of this large circle. Although some members of our yearbook staff (certain editors who shall remain nameless) are no varsity athletes, we can give you a view of sports from the spectators ' perspective. It ' s easy for us outsiders to tell who the athletes are. In the fall, volleyball and soccer shirts, as well as field hockey skirts and cheerleading sweaters, abound, and separate the jocks from the non-jocks. In the winter the habit of wearing uniforms on the day of a game drops off. School spirit succumbs to comfort, as it gets a little nippy wearing basketball shorts in January. Sports at Westboro are as much of a social event as an athletic contest. Football games in the fall, as well as basketball and hockey in the winter, get big crowds, although quite a few kids aren ' t playing close attention to the game. You can tell these fans by the way they occasionally interrupt their conversations to yell ' Yea team ' and look vaguely in the direction of the game. Even if some fans are a little hazy on the game itself, every athletic event unifies the school, and assembles stu- dents into one group. In this way, sports complete the circle of the school. least. SPIRALS The 1985 Ranger Football Team, defenders of the Central Massa- chusetts Division I Championship, showed what hard work and deter- mination was needed to defend such a title. Led by head coach, Jan Gebo, and assistant coaches, Marty Hayes, Mike Healy, and Jay Tortora, the Rangers were on a mission to secure their title. The outcome was unknown until the last play had been played and the final game was over. The Ranger ' s season was filled with many thrilling moments de- spite the assortment of injuries which hit the team hard. Led by Tri-Captains, Eric Berquist, Peter Landry, and Tom Schaefer, the team was forced to use a lot of new faces, including Juniors Ron Tebo, Carl Johnson, and Jason Lanzetta, as well as Sophomore Bob Haynes. The Rangers also counted on big plays from return- ing starters Joe McGrady and Tim Twombly and the upcoming skills of Marc Clifford and Bob Cove. One of the highlights of the season was the convincing 21-0 win over Hudson, who had been on a win- ning streak until our Rangers stopped them dead in their tracks. Unfortunately, in front of their hometown crowd the Rangers lost the duties of defensive leader, Joe O ' Brien due to a severely broken leg. However, the team has man- aged to keep close and keep in high spirits through the efforts of a terrific Senior leader, Jeff Koroski. The will to succeed to improve as individuals as well as a whole team, was displayed by each member of this team on a daily basis, especial- ly Kevin Ulhman. FACE-OFF To the Field Hockey Team, Well you guys, we had a heck of a season, and an unforgettable one at that. There were a lot of laughs and a lot of bruises. Al- though we weren ' t number one according to the midland league, we topped the charts when it came to decorating the coaches ' houses, stealing pumpkins, and even slurping spaghetti. We had a sensational season, and we ' ll never forget you. Thanks for making our senior year in field hockey a great one. To top it off we even went to districts!! We sure gave North Middlesex a run for their money as we scored the first unforgettable goal of the game. Good Luck next year! Beat May- nard!! Love, Nancy and Carolyn } : 38 39 CENTER KIG The 1985 Boy ' s Soccer Team opened the season with an excit- ing 1-0 win over Holy Name, but the rest of the season went against the Rangers. However, their final record of 2- 1 0-2 does not show the actual talent and effort of the team. It also does not show the true ability and effort of first year Coach, George Kent. Though the team in general didn ' t do well, many individuals had an excellent season. Tri-Captains, Paul Anderson, Ed Powers, and Mike Johnson man- aged to display their talents again and again. First year player, Adam Thompson, was a key defensive player for the Rangers as were un- derclassmen, Rob True and Carl Joechal. Unfortunately Justin Le- land was injured during the season and unable to play in the Ranger ' s remaining games. The team will be losing only six seniors, so next year ' s team, led by Craig Martin, should prove to be an excellent one. 40 OFF THE HEAD It was an encouraging season for the girls soccer team, who fin- ished off the season with a 3-12 record. The improvement of the girls ' individual and teamwork skills was displayed by their three wins, which were so earnestly achieved. Despite the immense losses of pre- vious seasons, many of the girls quickly adopted the attitude of a winning team. This attitude also helped to keep their spirits high throughout the losses. Co-captains Beth Viscardi and Karen McLaughlin courageously led the team through many mud fights, pasta parties and above all, WIPES. The quick forward line, consisting of Laura Stone, Beth Viscardi, and Beth Hanlon, scored many of there 20 goals on break- away plays. Melissa Wolf, with Booster spirit, and Dina Barretti led the midfield line. The teams defen- sive line was strengthened by Chris Chouinard and new comers Mari- anne Jankauskas and goalie Terri Balser. The team would sincerely like to thank Coach Lowbridge for his extreme dedication to the girls soccer program, from which we have learned very much. The sen- iors would like to wish the team luck and to Go Forth and achieve success in next years sea- son. 42 AROUND THE TRACK Senior tri-captains Dan Bean, Mike Hopkins, and Dan Sullivan led the 1 985 Cross Country team to a 7-5 record. Mike Hopkins was the first for Westboro for most of the sea- son, while the rest of the team packed it in to win 7 meets. Al- though the team is losing three seniors, Coach Masters has high hopes for next year. There were many injuries during the season, such as sprained ankles, pulled muscles, and a broken thumb. Many more injuries may have hap- pened if it wasn ' t for the use of Sparky Packets. If these had not been invented it could have been a very painful season. 44 LAPS This year ' s girl ' s Cross Country team with a 9-3 record, did a super job, thanks to Coach John Doyle. We were led by our 1 roadrunner Donna Straight; she ' s unbeliev- able. The coyote, Michelle Ba- liunas, came close to catching her many times this year. After our fa- vorite invalid, Kim Cove, had to leave us, Debbie Powell was the only Junior left to spell our syn- chronized gymnastic stretching. Unpredictable (yak) Sam Brown did great as usual, as did her soph- omore companions, Betsy Stone, the smiley face of the bunch, Lau- ra Lightbody, our gullible buddy, and Camille Vaughn who danced her way through the season. We can ' t forget Katie Cox who was al- ways shooting her foot before practice. The freshman Kate Thomas (how ' s Tim?) is sneaking up to the top. Our Cheerleader, Holly Lightbody, always had a rea- son to cheer when Melissa Foss showed us one of her strong fin- ishes. Sherri Conna and Melissa Turner made up a twosome which showed top effort. Thanks every- one for a great season. 46 ROTATIONS This year ' s varsity volleyball team ended its season with a respect- able 7-7 record, thanks to Miss Corcoran and the boys J.V. Soccer team (Hudson). MISS McDonald led the J.V. team to a fantastic 12- 2 record. The season was success- ful due to the setting of Stephanie Foulke and to spikers, Denise Pratt and Sheila Walsh (when she didn ' t leave parts of her hand on the ball). Kate Allen ' s blocks, and Pam Lusek ' s pokes, and Angie Fernan- dez ' s serves led us to many victo- ries. The highlight of the season was the trip to the Centrum, where we watched our future teammates — the U.S. Women ' s Olympic Vol- leyball Team — bump, set, and spike against Japan. We all left this year deaf (Mine!), bruised (Tach!), and satisfied. In short, we would like to thank Miss Corcoran and Miss McDonald for putting up with us and blah, blah, blah, so on, and so forth. 48 Somersaults The Girls Gymnastics team under- went another building season. The team was very young due to the lack of seniors, but there were sev- eral freshmen to balance this off. Nikki Stone and Kathy Rigsbee helped the team out with their ex- perience from earlier training, where as other sophomores and juniors were there to help the team. The girls on the team pulled together to get some wins this year and finished up second in the mid- land league. The gymnastics team had a lot of fun and would like to thank Mrs. B. for coaching us. 50 The Rink The Hockey team was led this year by Tri-Captains Andy Fay, Darrin McConnell and Kevin Grant, with support from returning Seniors Matt Swett, Eric Tepper and Brain Grehowski. They were led by Coach Shililie who enabled the team to have a good time on the competitive game of hockey. This year was a time for growth and ad- justment. The loss of Andy Fay and other key players made the team form a closerbond and work ever harder. The team has a definite potential next year with returning players and support from the school. 9 mm — -m 52 REBOUNDS The 1985-86 Girls Varsity Bas- ketball team had tenacious sea- son in general. Tri-captains Lorri Matuzek, Gretchen Reents and Megan Fay led the team with an unstoppable amount of intensity. Nancy Scott would psyche the team up by singing a verse of The Congo before entering. Monica Reach In Powers had an excep- tional power drive when she wasn ' t out of the game with five fouls. Chris Judge, also called Judger, was the sharp-shooter in the crowd. We are quite proud of our record this year, and know that next season will be even more suc- cessful, with the help of two aspir- ing sophomores, Erika Reents and Heather Candon. Good luck next year! Lorri, Gretch Meg 9 i) ) 54 HOOPS Following an unbelievable 22-1 season, Varsity Coach Richard La- Duke was left with no returning starters. The youthful team, with co-captains Rob Park and Tom Schaefer, had a long road ahead of them. They had a strong start beating Holy Name by a wide mar- gin, but then had many very close losses. When the strong rebound- ing of Carl Joeckle and shooting of Chris Gorak came together with the other key factors, the true tal- ent and ability of the team did come through. Keith Taylor and Chris Devaux, also made strong contributions to the Rangers ' suc- cess. Though the record may not show it, the team far exceeded any of the earlier expectations. The Rangers did sink or swim as a team. 56 POM-POMS Thanks to the hard work and dedi- cation of this year ' s cheerleaders, school spirit has really been cap- tured. The cheering season began in August, with cheering camp, where many new cheers were learned. The cheerleaders kept spirits high throughout football and basketball season even when things weren ' t going Westboro ' s way. The captains this year were Carol Burman and Nikki Vallee. Seniors Stacey Guagnini, Beth Har- ding, Kelly Harney, and Karen McKenney along with all the un- derclassmen, made for a memora- ble year. Everyone worked very hard at making a great year and an exciting season. As tournament time draws near, the cheerleaders work hard and strive for the best. Thanks to the great ideas of this year ' s creative cheerleaders. The tournament cheer should prove to be the best ever. Thanks Laurie — we love ya! Good luck next year — we ' ll miss ya! The football game between the senior and junior girls benefit- ted young Ben Horgan. The sen- iors, coached for the second year in a row by Mr. Kazeirski, were the obvious favorite because of their talent and experience. But despite Beth ' s Viscardi ' s passing and run- ning ability, the young, upstart Ju- nior team coached by Richard La- Duke came out on top. GO BACK TO DETENTION HALL DRIVERS ED You refused to watch Mechanized Death . GO BACK 5 SPACES 7 o 5 81 82 83 STUDEN DEFINITION: Well Rounded Student — n. male or female. An adolescent between the ages of 14-18 who attends some type of high school. He or she is involved in a combination of the follow- ing items: 1) a sport — not necessarily of the contact kind, but girls find this type more attractive. 2) scholastic studies — usually en- tails the opening of a text book once a week and the purchase of monarch notes in place of opening a literary book. Also involves learning how to complete a 3 hour home- work assignment in a 45 minute study period. 3) musical groups — can be either instrumen- tal or vocal. Reading music is not a require- ment for participation but a person must be able to wear polyester uniforms without de- veloping a severe skin condition. 4) Clubs — can range from serious political organiza- tions such as Model Congress to fun, casual groups such as square dancing or cake deco- rating. Must occur between 1 :45 and 2:22 to allow students to escape homeroom. 5) Friendships — relationships which have grown since a young age and have formed a close circle whose bond will last beyond our memorable high school years. 84 Freshmen L Abladian S.
