On Friday evening, April 6, 1984, the First Mates provided cruise entertainment with a talent and variety show. Student stars , as well as potential comedians, were brought to the surface as a series of lively performances took place on stage. M.C. ' s Mike Holmes and Richie Maloney (picture at bottom right) led the show, which was full of surprises. The l4-act program included music, dance, and comedy. Musical selections ranged from hard rock (see Impact ' s Peter Oikle on opposite page), tunes by the Jackson 5 (Joe Federman, Doug Hanchett and Mike Demma at bottom corner) and vocalist Kim Girard (You ' ve Got a Friend — opposite page, upper left) to classical piano solos. Dance acts included a comic Sophomore Shout (picture at right), and jazz performances by Bonnie Carlson and Penny Smith. Comedy was the highlight of the show, however, and it took on a variety of forms. The Newlywed Game was featured, and skits included School recited by Mike Powers (opposite page, bottom), Priscilla by Jen Linnane and Marianne Seidman (far right corner), and special appearances by several anonymous First Mate sailors. Winners were announced at the end of the show. First place went to Lianne Wong for her piano solo, followed by twin singer-team Janet and Lorraine Fisher for second, and Neon Garbage Bags , a barbershop quartet featuring Mike Holmes, Dave Rand, Scott Kruse, and Garret Walker, placed third. Overall, the Talent Show turned out to be an interesting evening, and is thus recorded in the log of our travels. 18
