Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1984 volume:

See p. 84 PEOPLE It seems to be the variety of people which makes Westboro High School interesting. If there weren ' t different types of people at WHS what would be left? A brick building with empty- headed zombies roaming the halls wearing their Levi jeans, t-shirts, and Nike sneakers. But seriously, laughs one senior, without freshmen crowding the halls, couples getting ' friendly ' on the balcony, school food thrown on the trays by the women with such pleasant smiles, Westboro High would be a boring place. The individuality of the students can especially be seen at social events such as the Junior Prom. On May 28, 1983, Westboro couples were seen dining at elegant restaurants such as Finally Michael ' s, Lizabeth ' s, and Bergson ' s 1790 House. Unbelievable as it seems, one unique couple, Garret Walker and Maureen Hensley, went to McDonald ' s. Fearing the risk of an unruly child throwing a french fry with ketchup on their evening clothes, they opted to go to the drive-thru win- dow. Since it was a special occasion, Garret offered to buy Maureen a Big Mac. Maureen, realizing that it was a night to be remembered, accepted his generous offer. Another night for students to show their peculiar talents was at the Class of 1984 ' s Talent Show. On that even- ing the audience was stunned to dis- cover the hidden talents of the most respected senior guys. John Burns, president of the class of ' 84 for two years, Steve Thibodeau, class treasur- er for two years and Boy ' s State re- presentative, Chris Anderson, star tennis player, along with Dean Ad- ams and Dave McKenney, who are all-around jocks, displayed their hid- den love for the ballet in their own version of Chauncy Lake. They seemed very serious, never cracking a smile, as they floated gracefully across the stage to Tchaikovsky ' s haunting tune. The only criticism re- ceived was not about the dancing, but the costumes. The only reason they didn ' t beat Kirk Merrow, explained one observant judge, is because their tutus weren ' t the exact disgusting shade of dirty, polluted green as Westboro ' s own Lake Chauncy. The senior class voted for the stu- dents who best fit the categories for senior superlatives. The actual votes were ignored by the yearbook staff; the honors were awarded to the high- est bidders. The highest bids came from Andrea Dunne and Steven Thi- bodeau (most spirited). The reason 2 they offered so much money was to get one more picture of themselves in the book. Rumors are that they pay off the photographers too. This is why they ' re in so many pictures. The highest bids came from Andrea Dunne and Steven Thibodeau (most spirited). The reason they offered so much money was to get one more pic- ture of themselves in the book. Ru- mors are that they pay off the photog- raphers too. This is why they ' re in so many pictures. Since the subject of pictures has come up, many photographers have complained how obnoxiously people behave when they see a camera. One junior girl, who wishes to remain anonymous, always tells photogra- phers Take my picture. My sister is the editor. So to shut her up, they take it. Freshmen are even more ridic- ulous with their behavior. Instead of remaining calm so that the photogra- pher can take a clear picture, they jump and twitch. This results in unu- sable pictures. So, all you freshmen out there, don ' t be mad if there are no pictures of you. It ' s your own fault. The wide spectrum of students at Westboro High School makes it a tru- ly interesting learning environ- ment. Surely everyone will remember their years at WHS as a unique ex- perience! (Editor ' s Note: We do not claim that any of the information stated above is factual — it is purely for entertain- ment.) By Two ' s People in pairs of two can always be seen at Westboro High. Whether it ' s two best friends walking to class, or a guy and a girl hanging around on the balcony. In the picture at the top right, John Burns and Mary Jane Mcintosh enjoy each other ' s com- pany while eating lunch. Carmen D ' Arcangelo and Jimmy Thompson at the near right enjoy the spotlight at the Junior Prom. Probably more important than having a boyfriend or girlfriend in high school is having a good friend. In the picture below Pam Carlson and Carlin Chrislu jock-out together, while Kim Masters and Patti Gallo (See picture at right) are ready for take-off on punk day. On the opposite page Reggie Tucker and Steve Thibo- deau duke it out. Beth Dewhurst and Lenore Pulaski demonstrate what close friends do the most, just hang around. (See bottom right) Festivities On May 28, 1983 the Class of 1984 held its Junior Prom. The theme song was You and I Performed by Mas- quirade. The highlight of the evening was the selection of the queen and her court. (Top right, opposite page) Car- men D ' Arcangelo, accompanied by Jim Thompson, was selected queen by the members of the band. Her court was composed of Kim Masters and Keith Fasold, Beth Braman and Ken- ny Kwiat, Terri Pierson and Dean Adams, Julie Steere and Mark Tep- per, Kerri Cahill and Scott O ' Con- nor, and Jane Dalton and Andy Ar- nold. As the night wore on, it was neces- sary for some prom-goers to take a rest. At the lower right Kristin McLaughlin and Scotty Scott take a breather, while others were still danc- ing the night away. Getting down at the far right are Julie Steere and Mark Tepper. Around 11:15 couples filtered out to go their separate ways seeing there was no class party. Some people went to Pam Bentley ' s, some to Billy Mar- tin ' s, and some even went to Harry ' s Diner. But everyone will look back on the fond memories of the evening. 4 f iJ 7 Yearbook Staff After selecting the yearbook staff in April, 1983, the challenge of find- ing a theme arose. We decided a fair- ytale was a fresh idea. So to promote unity on the staff, we took a trip to Newport, R. I. last May. Instead of bringing us closer, we drifted further apart. In the midst of the confusion, our theme changed from a fairy tale to a magazine format. Mr. Kaplan is still waiting for us to change our minds again. We feel this format is appropriate today because of the great impact the media has on our lives. Instead of being just a photo album, we hope it will give a realistic account of the 1983-1 984 school year. We ' d like to thank all the people who worked on the yearbook this year. We give special thanks to Sue Torres, our business editor, who sold all the ads ahead of schedule, Mark Langston and Kelly Sieger, photography edi- tors, who supplied us with enough pic- tures to make the book work, and Kathi Matuzek and Maureen Hens- ley, art editors, for helping us meet the deadlines. Without the help of Mr. Kaplan, this book wouldn ' t have come together. (Thanx Bob!) Your editors, Sue and John Stars! = On Friday evening, March 25, 1983, talent came from many new and unexpected sources. The Class of 1984 was holding their Junior Talent Show. Music dominated the evening, with selections ranging from heavy metal to classical piano solos. Com- edy was presented by the Girls of 1984 in their in between act skits, (See picture at right) and by the M.C. ' s, Chris Orff, Garret Walker, and Peter Valinski. The most humor- ous performance of the night was Chauncy Lake . In the picture on the opposite page, Dave McKenney, Steve Thibodeau, John Burns, and Chris Anderson strut their stuff. At the end of the show the judges passed in their ballots. Kirk Merrow was named the winner for his classi- cal piano solo. The general consensus was that the Class of ' 84 ' s Talent 12 Good Friends Good Times Even though there are many other places we would rather be than at Westboro High, we manage to make it through the days with the help of good friends. These friends help to make slightly boring classes a little more interesting. (See pictures on the opposite page) Booster week is a time when mem- bers of each class pull together for one common goal. And they have a good time doing it. Spirit week gives the whole school a chance to show its school spirit, or lack of it! For some reason underclassmen get psyched up for the daily events (See pictures at right) while seniors are a little less enthusiastic. Lisa Puopolo and Mau- reen Hall are prime examples of the Senior Attitude . (See Picture be- low) The memories of the good friends and good times of high school will always be with us. The Three Stooges 14 Woman of the Year The Class of 19 dedicates TlJVLEy to i4 Iaa. JwwtT $oyk ln addition to instructing us in the f rench language, she has succeeded in teaching us something of other- cultures and ways of life. Wc are grate ful to her for broadening our ed%Lcation beyond what can be learned tn tejet books. To a Knowledgeable and elegant lady, this is our way of sayiny t lAX . 17 The Best of ' 84 21 World Leaders The teachers at Westborough High School never cease to amaze their stu- dents. They are usually boring, occa- sionally witty, and often times upset- ting (like those essays assigned a few days before Mid-Years). Like our world leaders today, each has an out- standing characteristic that amuses the people around them. Take Mrs. Lorusso (PLEASE!). She will always be remembered for exclaiming OH SKUNKFACE! whenever she makes mistakes. She ' s also known to use this expletive when a female leaves the bathroom heavily scented. Likewise, Mr. Juszynski ' s swell attitude will go down in WHS history. In spite of its strange idiosyn- crasies, our faithful faculty has man- aged to teach us much along the way. This year, teachers are being awarded for their noteworthy charac- teristics in the form of teacher super- latives. Mrs. Boyle and Mr. Pappazi- sis were ecstatic upon learning that they were voted best dressed. They are happy to know that they haven ' t spent their money for nothing. Ms. Ferrari and Mr. Heckman were rec- ognized for the devilish grins they give students who flunk tests. Ms. Ferrari was heard saying, Thank God for ULTRABRITE! when she was awarded the honor. Mr. Heck- man attributes the popularity of his smile to his boyish charm. Mrs. Mul- lin and Mr. Sharpe were nominated and actually won The Shortest award. However, in order to avoid conflicts and possible lowering of our grades, we gave them Cutest in- stead. Most Gullible went to Mrs. George and Mr. Kaplan. When they asked us if they were REALLY gull- ible, we said no and they believed us!! We placed two lucky teachers. Miss Spinney and Mr. Juszynski, in a class by themselves. Miss Spinney has impressed us all with her valient pro- tection of the third-floor girls ' room. Mr. Juszynski, with his charming dis- position, has shown us the finer things in life. After all, what self-respecting student would eat his lunch without a bottle of Diet Moxie? No one could compete for The Swell Guy and Gal Award against our own Charlotte and Walter. One controversial issue among teachers was the invasion of the National Guard. Although the Na- tional Guard ' s mission was to pre- serve peace at WHS, some teachers and students were not pleased by its presence. Other teachers got into the army spirit. Mrs. Rouke-Dupuis got a little confused as to whether she was show- ing a filmstrip or shooting a student. Another controversial issue among the teachers was the guarding of our 22 parking lots in the morning. As stu- dents, we feel safe knowing that no one will steal the lot. It is also refresh- ing to drive into school and be wel- comed by a freezing, friendly face. We are comforted by the fact that the se red-nosed undercover agents are guarding and protecting the pave- ment from all the pavement-snatch- ers rumored to be lurking in Westbor- ough. Keep up the good work! All in all, being a teacher is not an easy job. Many teachers claim to be losing their sanity. Evidence of this can be found anywhere. Besides los- ing his Music Theory class, Mr. Pap- pazisis lost Leopard Woman in Mon- treal (to his great disappointment). Mr. Lightbody lost his beard as well as the attention of half of his students. Mr. Trahan, determined to outdo Jim, lost weight and ALL of his class during the invasion of the A. P. Mafia. Mr. Markvenas has succeeded in get- ting everyone lost in physics, while everyone in A. P. Chemistry is totally lost, including Mr. Cerasoli . . . Mr. Vail, our fearless leader, stands alone — determined not to lose his friendly disposition (no sarcasm in- tended). However, the most signifi- cant loss that the faculty will face in their career will be the loss of the class of nineteen hundred and eighty four. Administrators: (back row) Dr. Kelleher, Dr. Thurston, Mr. Baker, Mr. Willard (front row) Mr. Cowles, Mrs. Ingerman, Mrs. Smith, Mrs. Bentley, Mr. Pessia To the Class of 1984: In a very few days we will be attending the best Graduation ever, as each of you who re- ceives a diploma will walk proudly across the stage. We will, indeed, tell you to walk proudly, as you will have achieved a goal that has not come easily; a goal not achieved by all; a goal for which you and your family may be MIGHTY proud. Proud, too, are the achievements of your Class, including the spirit you have given to the school and your three-in-a-row Booster Day victories in Grades 10, 11 and 12. So, walk proudly, good Class of 1984. The school is better because you were here. We will miss you. J. Some kids join clubs because they are truly interested in them. A lot of kids join them to show how involved they are in school and to show col- leges how well-rounded they are. This year though, a lot of kids joined ciub-for-a-day . There are about five very, very well-rounded kids in this school. As a matter of fact, they are in every club picture. These five senior guys decided to form their own club; to pursue an in- terest that is truely different . They decided to become the Future Ho- mewreckers. They are dedicated to break-up homes across the United States, but especially in suburbia. Unfortunately there are no under- classmen in this innovative club. They also have no club advisor yet. Thus, there is a chance that the club will die out next year. Let ' s hope not. Another club has been formed in response to the growing violence in the world today. These people hope that their club, the Senior Humanity Club (See Page 43). can counter this incredible destruction with love, peace, and friendship. It is inspiring to see so many fine upstanding young men commited to ending violence. Rest assured that the world will be a much finer place due to organizations like this one. If people with such peaceful ideas were in the govern- ment today, we would all feel much safer. 36 We asked each club to submit a short paragraph detailing the clubs events this year. These paragraphs are not in this yearbook. Too much had to be censored out. Mr. Kasierski said that the Chess club taught the moves for Check-mating . Well that seems a little forward. Another club is the Dungeons and Dragons Club. What does this club do? It seems doubtful that there are either dungeons or dragons in West- boro. Or do they lead a move to install dungeons in Middle-class towns? Well, what ever this mystery club does we hope they have increased membership next year. After all, if what they do is such a secret, it must be important. Another club that is a mystery is A.F.S. What does this club do this year? As far as we know there is no foreign exchange student at West- boro High. (Except the one we found at the Halloween Dance. See page 43) This club has the largest member- ship of any club at W.H.S. I don ' t get it. Local Leaders PR — John Burns, VP — Scotty Scott, TR — Steve Thibodeau, SC — Kris McLaughlin fe 7 cut j o4 8 The Class of 1984 gives special thanks to Mr. Richard Mongeau. As one athlete puts it, There are many reasons why people come to our games. Even though people leave not knowing the score, it ' s encouraging for us to see familiar faces. The biggest support comes from the parents. There are basically two types of parents: the passive observer and the emotional observer. The pas- sive observer sits in the bleachers and silently watches his child. If his kid gets a touchdown, you see a Boy, am I proud look appear on his face. If his kid lets the soccer ball go into the net, he puts on the Gee, he should of had that one look. He is the kind of guy who gives his kid a Life Saver after the team loses the big game. The emotional observer, on the other hand, basically screams during the entire game. He screams whether his child is playing well or not so well or not at all. The emotional observer lets everyone around him know his view. He shows his disagreements with the referees by yelling, Hey ref, you need a new pair of glasses! The emo- tional person also helps coach his son or daughter. Keep your eye on the ball or Both hands on your stick are two helpful hints parents give to their kids during games. By careful observation, a person can catorize parents as a passive or emotional ob- server. Another source of support comes from the girlfriends of our athletes. One cheerleader shows her enthusi- asm for her boyfriend ' s success when she gives an extra special cheer for him when he gets a basket. Some girls will sit in the freezing cold of the hockey rink to watch every hockey game their boyfriends play. Other girls will endure the cold and the rain to watch their boyfriends play a soc- cer game or a football game. Whether the girlfriend ' s presence embarrasses their boyfriend or allows him to show off in front of her. we will never know. The majority of spectators go to these athletic events because it is the social thing to do. How many students spend two hours at a game and leave not knowing who won, what the score was, or who played? The height of the social athletic calendar is the Thanks- 58 giving Day Football game. When we asked students who won this exciting game, we got replies such as Marl- boro , the Patriots , and one girl said, the Celtics. What a bunch of smarties. Westboro won. Even though a lot of peop le don ' t pay much attention to the game, they know enough to clap at the end if Westboro wins. The most faithful fans of our teams are the cheerleaders. They go to every football game and basketball game along with some soccer and hockey games. They are often critisized for not going to every game of every sport. Now let ' s be realistic. If cheer- leaders had to go to every game played by our teams, they would have to quit school and work as full-time cheerleaders. Would they get paid by the hour or by the number of cheers they did? Or else cheerleaders could take one sport a piece and cheer just for that sport. Now that would be cute. In between the periods of a hockey game, Andrea Dunne could skate out on the ice and do a cheer. Or Lisa McTyghe could do a cheer be- tween volleyball games. Somehow I don ' t think the specific team cheer- leader would work out. We do have to give them credit for sticking with the teams whether they are winning or not. Keep up the good work!! No matter what type of fan you are, our teams appreciate you just be- ing at their games. It shows them that the rest of the school is really interest- ed in their sport. RRNGER VERY BEST r fOR ET IT m 59 GIRLS SOCCER The Girls Soccer team was a new team this year and was coached by Linda Smith. Their co-captains were Kris Latvis and Brandi Hobby. These two seniors had formed an intramural team in 1982 and were able to form a varsity team in 1983. Their record was 2-12-2 which does not reflect the amount of effort and determination which was shown. They started out without even knowing certain basics, including Becky Lawton who kicked the ball into her own net! Kelly Sieger played the position of goalie for the first time and did a tremendous job. Chris Mitchell also showed great ef- fort, especially after she kicked Kris Latvis in the knees. Terry Pierson and Kim Wlodarczyk were two other sen- iors who helped the team a great deal this year. The year was basically a learning experience but a lot of deter- mination was shown along with a lot of fun. Brandi Hobby even tried to wear her favorite hat for one game! They would like to thank especially their coach, Linda Smith, for sticking with them. Good show, Girls Soccer! Now girls, stop fighting over me! V 60 Siegs saves a goal! Seniors: Kelly Sieger, Kim Wlodarczyk, Brandi Hobbie, Kris Latvis, Terry Pierson, Chris Mitchell, Judy Rose. Varsity soccer, lead by tri-captains Billy Martin, Peter Valinski, and Reggie Tucker, had a slow but im- proving season. After losing 1-0 against Algonquin, Westboro man- aged to give them a good scare in our best soccer game of the season. The team pulled together near the end of the season and their final record was 2-9-3. With only four seniors, the team had to rely heavily on the ju- niors. With the help of Coach Curtis Schnaire, the soccer team learned that winning isn ' t everything. We wish next year ' s domage. Captains: Reggie Tucker, Billy Martin, Peter Valinski 62 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY The Girls Cross Country team had a record of 5-3. They were led by Coa ch John Doyle. Upperclassmen, as well as underclassmen, helped con- tribute to this winning season. The team experienced many ups and downs, especially when Debbie Powell got lost in the woods during a race. All the freshmen showed great potential, especially Donna Straight, Kim Cove, and Melissa Paris. Dawn Briggs and Karen Vallis worked their hardest and never gave up. Chris Healy, despite her fear of buses (after missing one and almost being kicked off another) made it to all the races. Colleen Collins was lucky to make it through the season because of her constant breathing problems. Jane Lapato showed her flexibility when she ran a race before stretching. Maureen Sullivan went out with a bang as she beat her record on the Westboro course. The team got along well and made lasting friendships not only among themselves but also with other teams. Next year ' s team prom- ises to be very successful and will be led by Diana Hayes and Laura Stone. Look who we found! 1 cant believe we aciualh did ii! 64 BOYS CROSS COUNTRY The Boys Cross Country team had a record of 4-7. They were coached by Clark Masters and were led by co- captains Mark Langston and John Dever. Junior Dan Rasmus displayed his running talents by being 1 run- ner on the team. He was followed closely by Dave Blascoe, Mark Lang- ston, Mark Stevens and Dan Sullivan. D.J. Tom Bushroe, with his portable music box, was finally asked by the coaches to leave his music at home. Sean McNamara, close to the girl ' s team, was elected team flirt. Mike Hopkins had a great season even though he was plagued with leg injur- ies. Tim Goland showed potential as a good runner. Overall, the boys cross country team proved to be successful and shows potential for future years. 66 FOOTBALL The 1983 Ranger football team had an outstanding season with a re- cord of 9-1. They were lead by tri- captains Dean Adams, Tom Cowles and Steve Jernberg. The Rangers had an outstanding coaching staff, led by Head Coach Jan Gebo and Assistants Tony Wood and Mike Healy. The J.V. team had a record of 5-2-1 and was lead by Marty Hayes. The fresh- men team had a record of 6-1 and was lead by Chip Biena. The season was filled with many thrilling moments as shown by Scotty Scott and Todd Dick giving the hands up, touchdown, sig- nal. Finally beating Clinton after sev- en years, they showed their apprecia- tion to Mike Healy by T.P.ing his house that night. Marlboro ' s record was ruined when the Rangers beat them 21-20. This was made possible by the mighty offensive line along with the help of Tommy Cowles, Dean Adams and Scotty Scott. De- fense proved to be powerful by shut- ting out four clubs. Garret Walker ' s chant will never be forgotten along with the close friendships made. Way to go, guys! Come on guys, look mean! Yipee! 68 Field Hockey Senior captains Pam Carlson and Kari Gavel led the team to a 6-6-2 record in what was basically a learn- ing season, but one with a lot of team spirit and a lot of fun. Sue Johnson was the best defensive player, and M.V.P. Sue Breen, with Heidi Reents and Carol Malone, made up a strong offensive team. Goalies Pam Carlson and Heather Forsythe did their be st to keep the scores low. Terri Cox and Jen Menzel protected the left-hand side of the field, while Gretchen Reents and Carolyn Breen followed in their sisters ' footsteps, playing many positions well. Carlyn Chrislu, Heather Rose, Mary Keeler, Kathe Newey, and Beth Markert all played hard in their supporting positions, and Mo Hall was back, more aggres- sive than ever. All in all, every mem- ber of this team added something spe- cial to create a spirited, hardworking group. Sorry Tim. but you can ' t play. We ' re actually winning! Why me? 70 Seniors: (kneeling) Pam Carlson, Kari Gavel, (sitting) Karen Johnson, Cindy Johnson, Mary Keeler, Sue Johnson, Carlyn Chrislu, Maureen Hall, Heather Forsythe, Heather Rose. 71 Volleyball = Senior captains Caroline Miller and Melissa Cove led the team to a 9- 5 record, only missing districts by two games. Two highlights of the season were the Maynard games: in the first, no one ' s serves were in, and in the second no one could stop laughing, but Westboro won both games! Serv- ing was a strength of the team; al- though Melissa Cove hit almost half of hers out, Kim Masters scored all fifteen points in one game with her newly acquired serving talent. Some players were not quite so co- ordinated and, like Katie Allen, often got run over by Caroline Miller! Overall, this was a very young team, and greater successes are predicted for the future. 72 Girl ' s Gymnastics The Westboro Girl ' s Gymnastics team is lead by coaches Lori Borek and Jill Dunphy. The co-captains are Jane Lapato and Chris Healy. The team is quite young, but with hard work will show promise for the future. Junior Stephanie Hobby has proven to be the top all-around competitor. Each team member has worked her hardest and even though the team is not on a superior level, each girl has achieved individual goals. The bal- ance beam seems to be the team ' s most promising event and next year the scores are expected to be even higher. With the return of juniors Bonnie Carlson, Cindy Forbush, Sheila Hinde and Stephanie Hobby as well as the underclassmen, the team shows promise for next year. The team would like to thank Mrs. B. and Jill for helping throughout the season. You ' ve got to be kidding! What do you mean 1 have to sweep the whole gym? 74 75 Hockey The hockey team was lead this year by captain Scott O ' Connor and assis- tants Dan Moultan, Mark Tepper, and Dave McDonald. There was a new Coach this year also. Coach Alan Cooledge helped the team achieve their goals. He worked them hard and another outstanding hockey team was produced. The hockey team has many players coming back next year, for example, their goalie Bobby Hunter. Also, other players who will be back are: Glenn Brown, Andy Fay, and Steven Tepper. They have had tough competition against Marlboro and Algonquin. The Westboro Hockey team is basically a young team which holds much promise for future years. Alright, who ate the puck ' 1 ' 76 Girls ' Basketball Captains Caroline Miller, Kris Latvis, Chris Mitchell, and Colleen Collins have led the team to a mid- season record of 2-6, but the team was constantly improving (the first loss to Holy Name was by 30, the second by 5). There were injuries to some im- portant players, including Chris Mitchell and Sue Breen. Pee Wee lead the offense, with about 15 points per game, and Col- leen was the leading rebounder, with about 10 per game. Chris Mitchell was especially missed when Pee Wee and Caroline both fouled out during the Shrewsbury game. The team was hoping to do well for the rest of the season, and to keep up the team spirit. ,♦7 I ( Freshman Team Coach Wood 78 Boys ' Basketball Captains John Burns, Dave McKenney, and Scotty Scott have led the team to a mid-season record of 6- 2. There have been some exciting games, especially an overtime against Milford (Coach LaDuke pulled his tie off during that one!). The offense was led by Mike Power and Kevin Collins, who average 24 and 1 8 points per game, respectively. They were also aggressive defensivley, along with Todd Dick, Dave McKenney, Scotty Scott, Rich Maloney, and Doug Montgomery. The other play- ers, (and the managers) provided loud encouragement from the bench whenever they weren ' t playing. The team was hoping to repeat last year ' s league championship and to do well in the Clark Tournament. front row: E. Gorak, D. Goland. H. Scott, D. McKenney. J. Burns. R. Maloney, S. Buck Coach! 80 Cheerleaders The cheerleaders returned from an exciting week at Cheering camp last summer with a new style and a vari- ety of new cheers. By holding rallies and teaching the school to slide on Down , the cheerleaders helped bring back school spirit. The great football season really gave the cheerleaders something to cheer about. Whether it be rain or shine, the cheerleaders were there to support their team. As the football season ended, the cheer- leaders moved on to root on the bas- ketball team. Soon basketball ended and the cheerleaders put their best efforts towards competition. Oh, there are other words to describe them but this is a family publication and we want to keep things clean. Besides, the underclassmen probably wouldn ' t understand such sophisticated lan- guage. The reason underclassmen ex- ist, and in fact the only good thing about them, is that one day they will become Seniors. The trip from under- classman to senior can be a long and bumpy trail. This trail can be seen in a graph showing the peaks in social and academic life. Freshman is perhaps the most easi- ly distinguishable class. On the first day of school, one can see a freshman miles away. Yes, they ' re the ones holding a school map, book of rules, and a year ' s supply of pens. They of- ten have a slightly uneasy look on their face because they can ' t find their fourth-floor class. Freshmen are known for their serious attitude to- ward schoolwork and their respect for teachers. They can be seen every day 84 running to class in order to get to their class on time. Freshmen, believing that good grades are crucial to their well-being, begin studying for exams weeks in advance. Teachers, im- pressed by their diligence, consider freshmen to be good investments for the future. As seen in the graph, a student ' s highpoint in terms of study habits and respect for school begins and ends during freshman year. Unfortunately, a freshman ' s social life is not quite as good as his aca- demic life. All freshman girls, im- pressed by the mature looks and cars of older men, aspire to date men in the sophomore and junior classes. The) form admiration clubs in which they drool over untouchable seniors. The freshman guys, finding themselves deserted, decide that girls are unim- portant. (After all, it is hard to date a girl if you have to ask your mother to pick her up!) Instead, they become involved in sports, like playing with superballs in the hall before home- room. Poor boys, they have to wait till they are older and have cars to enjoy the pleasures of dating high school Juniors Paging Off girls. Sophomores, the up and coming class, are the midpoint of their jour- ney. At this point, the novelty of high school has begun to wear off, and they feel more relaxed in school. As a re- sult, they often become over-confi- dent. No longer the youngest in the school, they feel a great superiority to the little freshmen. More and more, they linger on the balcony, talk- ing to friends and looking for possible dates. They get their first tardies and detentions during sophomore year. The graph illustrates how sopho- mores begin to disobey school rules and study less. However, they man- age to maintain their level of achieve- ment in school. As school ' s importance decreases, concern for social life increases dur- ing the sophomore year. Students be- gin to have parties where girls and guys can associate without the benefit of a parent ' s concerned gaze. At last, guys have a chance to date. They find that freshman girls are only too eager to date older guys, with or without cars. All in all, sophomore year proves to be, shall we say, interesting. Finally, with one more year to go, Juniors find their hard work and pa- tience paying off. School is consid- erably less important to them than it was during freshman year, but most manage to keep their grades up through minimal studying. Deten- tions and bad grades are no longer a cause for alarm, and the librarians are no longer seen as threats. The graph shows how Juniors show less concern for school rules and studies, but manage to get good grades to pull up their class rank. Junior year is an underclassman ' s social peak. Guys have finally gotten their licenses and have no trouble get- ting dates. Cars prove to be extremely useful tools, opening up a whole new world of enjoyment. (Really Mom, I think the earrings you found in the car are yours!) At this point, Junior girls begin to rediscover junior guys. Couples within the Junior class abound. They find wonderful places to be alone, like in the stairway dur- ing lunch. The graph shows that ju- nior year is certainly a period of en- lightenment. The underclassman years are indis- pensible. These three years prepare a student, academically and socially, for Seniorhood. The Freshmen are good investments. While they often display too much concern for school, their diligence is a sure sign of suc- cess. Sophomores are definitely up and coming. Finally accustomed to high school, they begin to find a bal- ance between their academic and so- cial lives. Juniors find their hard work paying off when they have senior year in sight. They manage to retain a constant level of achievement, while they reserve a lot of time for dating. Still, nothing can compare to a SEN- IOR, especially one from the class of 1984. 85 R. Alei V. To make the name official, they dropped 200 su- perballs from the balcony to the lob- by. Teachers began to whisper, Here we go again! When school started in September it was obvious the summer went by too quickly because many seniors wore shorts the first day. Their minds were at the beaches NOT in the class- rooms. But soon enough they did come to a rude awakening that sum- mer was over and their last year of high school had begun. The seniors began to show their class unity and spirit during October. Many seniors had learned in Psychol- ogy that breakfast is the most impor- tant meal of the day. (Without a good breakfast, schoolwork suffers.) One morning the senior class went to Ab- dow ' s for breakfast to prove this the- ory. But they were very kind to send the Truent Officer down to Abdow ' s to inform the seniors that the school was anxiously awaiting their arrival. And yes, the detention hall was filled three consecutive days after this event. The seniors celebrated Halloween by having a pumpkin drive. The po- l ice did not approve of the Class of ' 84 carrying on this annual tradition. The police did their job by towing cars and chasing two, poor, unsuspecting sen- ior girls to the top of the ski tow. And by the way, how did the pumpkins get on the top of the goal posts on the football field? Seniors definitely did not put them up there. Seniors have too much common sense to climb goal posts. It seems who did it will remain one of life ' s great mysteries. Most seniors participated in the an- nual Christmas event of Elfing . Seniors, dressed in red and green, were romping through the classrooms singing beautiful renditions of Christ- mas classics such as Rudolph, the Red Nose Reindeer and Jingle Bells . Teachers reacted differently to these sing-elves. Some teachers welcomed the festive mood while oth- ers locked their doors: refusing to let 104 in Santa ' s cute helpers. One class- less elf was left to roam the halls after being kicked out of class by a mean, old scrooge. The day ended early for these busy elves. They had to rest up before going out with Santa on Christmas Eve. The Class of ' 84 demonstrated their superb acting ability with their performance of The Man of La Mancha . Garret Walker took the spotlight as Westborough ' s own Don Quiote while Lisa Puopolo became our Aldonza. John Donoghue por- trayed Don Quitoe ' s whimpy side- kick, Sancho. One thing we learned from this production was how many talented guys the senior class has. Where have you guys been hiding all these years? All in all, the senior play showed how the whole class could work together to reach a major goal. Good Job!! The best thing that happened dur- ing the 1983-84 school year is how the Senior class pulled together to make our last year of high school the best. We went through a lot together this past year. We ate breakfast together and served our detentions together. We kept the tradition of elfing alive, too. And now we will graduate to- gether and then go our separate ways. But we will always remember the TIMES of our High School Years. SANDRA LESLIE ACKLEY Sandy San You Never Realize How Special Love Is Un- til You Have Someone Special To Love.
