The 1983 Yearbook Staff, in its earliest meetings, began to decide on a theme for our production. How could we even begin the book, though, when we did not feel like a real group? Since one of the possiblities of the theme was The Mountain, some- one came up with the brilliant idea of climbing up a mountain to get to know one another better. With that in mind, a majority of us, including Mr. Kaplan, began the hike up Mt. Monadnock in late May of last year. It was a struggle, and many times we felt like climbing down be- fore we reached the top; but, some- how, we made it up to a ridge with a spectacular view, and decided that the effort had been worth it. The results of the climb can still be seen today. Not only did it solidify our theme, but it also unified us as a group. We, the editors, thank the en- tire staff for their struggle throughout our Senior Year towards the success- ful completion of Upward Bound. Lorie and Joe 6

The greatest need that one can have during the school day is a warm and friendly smile, letting you know that someone cares. The ability to emanate this special thoughtfulness is both admired and uncommon. We have found this exceptional quality in Mr. Robert Todd — better know as Scottie. Therefore, we, the class of 1983, thankfully dedicate Upward Bound to Scottie, whose consider- ation for our class will be remem- bered always. 5
