Class of ' 82 : A success story The widely acclaimed play Class of ' 82 is winding down its four year run, according to the director. The show was a huge success but the principles are all looking forward to more challenging roles. The play opened in September of 1979 and immediately became a huge success. The actors took pride in the show and it skyrocketed at once. However, the first years were disrupted by several events, both inter national and personal. The new pope, John Paul I, died after only thirty days in office; the horrors of a nuclear accident at the Three Mile Island reactor; the Iranian hostage situation; the Mt. St. Helens eruption; and the Who concert trampling in Cincin- nati. Several personal events also disrupted the play ' s run: ticket sales were slowly sinking, the treasury was almost empty, and a ticket-selling scandal forced the retirement of the show ' s first director. The producer threatened to with- draw financial support and the show seemed doomed. How- ever, a new director took over the reins of control and got the show back in lights. The show once again prospered. Several successful money raisers, including a gala festival ball and an impressive Italian dinner, enabled the show to reopen. The third year of the show was a great success. The cast held an extragavent party to celebrate the successful year and to kick off the final encore year. Several newsworthy events marked the third year: the final release of the Iran WATER BAN IN EFFECT CONSERVE WATER hostages; the landslide victory of Ronald Reagan over Presi- dent Carter; several attempted assassinations: an attempt on the life of President Ronald Reagan, and an attempt to murder the pope, John Paul II; and one successful assassina- tion, the brutal, senseless murder of John Lennon outside his new York apartment. In the final year of the play Class of ' 82 , several events have already become history. The space shuttle was launched into space, while Libyan SG-22 fighter planes were being shot down. The air traffic controllers went on strike and sent the air space over the United States into turmoil. The Middle East Situation intensified as Egypt ' s Anwar Sadat was brutally slain. Locally, the town has been stricken by a water shortage (and a subsequent water ban), as well as a teacher dispute that cost the X-important Class of ' 82 cast their second and most effective director. Time still remains to catch a showing of the Class of ' 82 and this edition is one well worth seeing. The future of the cast is yet to be seen, but to all of those people who have made these four years what they have been, good luck and God bless.
