In keeping with this idea, we have on the opposite page the pictures of the old building and of our present building, and the architect's drawing of the new build- ing now being constructed. The high school on School Street was established in 1854. This school differed from the other public schools in that it was ungraded and taught only more advanced courses. A few of the numerous studies taught by Silas C. Stone were mental philoso- phy, rhetoric, astronomy, surveying, and Greek. Mr. Stone, the only teacher, re- ceived a salary of S600 per year. In years to come the school underwent many changes in appearance and faculty. The school was forttmate to have among its personnel a noted educator, Henry Whittemore, who later became the head of Framingham State Teachers College. The school maintained a normal pace of growth and development and eventually in the 1920's the population of the town became such as to necessitate a larger and more modern school building. The construction of the present school, donated to the town by Mr. and Mrs. Fran- cis W, Forbes, was begun in 1925 and was completed by June, 1926. On the day se- lected for the transfer to the new building the pupils went to school as usual at eight o'clock. At eight-thirty they gathered their books and belongings, walked down the street, and entered our present school. In the amazingly brief period of one half hour they resumed their classes. Thus, in effect, the Class of '26 became the first to grad- uate from the new school. The building contained all the latest equipment, laboratory apparatus, cooking and sewing rooms, gymnasium, projection room, a private room for teachers, and an auditorium, which recently has been dedicated to the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Forbes. After thirty years of use, the building is still in fine condition. Fifteen hundred and seven pupils, including the present class, have been graduated from it and we hope that incoming students in future years will be as proud of it as we have been. In a short time a new era of schools in Westboro will begin. With the termination of high school classes in our present building, we will again undertake to modernize our facilities in accordance with the current trend toward advancement in modern high school education. 2 l-1 lf au 21,94 scam ,if L.: lil 1, Q IS PWM 2494 scam A Fl lil eg Aj -lj! hw my saw ,f ' Wu For her understanding of her students, For her work in teaching us and others the English language, For her patience when we erred, For her energy spent to give us our magazine, the ORIEL, three times a year, For her help as class advisor, For all we have gained by having her as our teacher and friend, we, the class of 1957, dedicate our year- book, THE COTTON GIN, to Miss Ruth Wadleigh. 4 acuity 14 ALLISTON E.
