Congratulations to the Class of I96l: Your graduation marks an important milestone on your path- way of life. Success in life, however, is not assured by graduation from high school for it is only the foundation upon which to build. Education is a continuous process. We hold that the education process begins with the individual, yet that individual never stands apart, the underlying wisdom and competence which he possesses is finally a realization that knowledge is only useful when it is shared and channeled into productive pursuits. He may serve business or may husband the earth, he may become a minister of the Gospel, or a minister of government, he may seek to probe the mysteries of outer space or to probe mysteries like cancer that aFflict his fellow men. I urge you to continue your education with purpose and deter- mination, whether it be formally or informally so that you can assumye your- rightful place in a highly technical society. . .i IN . rl W, I , ee? A well informed individ- ual, who comprehends and appre- ciates democracy and its ideals is the greatest achievement a tea- cher can achieve. In these troubled times, students must learn about the conditions of our world as they exist today as they existed in the past, and the probable way they will exist in the future. If we, the leaders of tomorrow, are to govern our heritage with an adult mind, we must take a positive view and profit by the mistakes our forefathers have experienced. The besT way To recall These mem- ories, I believe, is To depict in our mind a typical day in The life of a senior, in This case me. In The morning, I arrive aT school, and enter The lobby bleary-eyed from watching The Jack Paar Show The nighT before. BuT I am soon awakened by a swirling horde of falseTTo-voiced seventh graders who brush past me with hurricane force. IT is Wednesday, so I musT go back into The music wing for Chorus. To my horror l realize ThoT between me and The choral wing There is a solid mass of humanify That I must peneTraTe. WiTh The help of Gabriel, and a few other second-shifT angels, I make it To Chorus, on Time, no less. Chorus pro- ceeds uneventful, but iust as The bell rings aT 9:08, I realize ThoT I don'T have my Ivlath done, and The only period between now and maTh class is gym! With The budgeTing of Time, and with The loss of o handful of Tin- gernails nervously bit, I geT my math done iust as The Teachers blandly sTaTes. You may keep Today's papers. Temptation is There To go back To The Teacher and say, Take iT or else! BuT The or else would probably be six hours deTenTion. By The way, did you noTice Thaf The old-fashion custom of one hour deTenTion has been abandoned in favor of lump sums, like six or eighT hours of deTenTion. There is power in numbers! LeT me back- track a biT To gym class. How many Times have you seen seniors limping Through The halls with aching muscles affer a gym class of sfrengfh Tesfs and exercises. I often wondered how red an Indian would become if pale- faces Turn as red as a lobster after doing IO chin-ups, 75 siT-ups, 30 push-ups, and one fall on The floor lfrom exhausfionl. Ivly whole day is Hlled with such evenTs, which at the Time were miserable, by which are not a source of unmitigated pleasure, There are many special events which bring back mem- ories, such as The Junior Class Trip To Washington, The ineviTable eighth-grade excursion To Gettsyburg, The plays our class has had, eTc., and also etc. Such little events as Taking beTs on how long so-and-so will go sTeady with such-and-such a person, and I believe a whole book could be written called, The Amazing Ad- ventures of The Death-defying Goldberg. Finally, while all The Teachers and members of The adminisTraTion are heaving congraTulaTions and besT wishes on The Class of '62, I would like To Turn The spot- lighT of congraTulaTions on the stoical personages which we commonly call Teachers. Why do I call Them sfoical? How would you like To face abouT 25 or more angry faces and try To Teach Them something which They have decided They aren'T going to learn. I hereby presenf The faculty of West York High School with The insignificant, buT sincerely well-meant Bravery Award of Dave Myers. Good work! All These great people, Terrific co-students, wonderful Times, and nostalgic memories - Thank God for Them! On Saturday, December 2, l96'l, at 8:00 p.m., the Senior Class of West York Area High School pre- sented their class play, Penny, in the high school auditorium. The cast, directed by Mr. Robert Donley, are to be commended for their excellent presentation. The cast included, Penny, Shirley Han- line, Mother, .loan Meisenhelter, Fa- ther, John Waltersdorff, Doodie, Larry Knipple, Elwood, Bronley Walker, Aunte Ellen, Linda Haare, Mr. Jackson, Ray Sandy, Alice, Suzanne Kauffman, Fay, Anna Wagner, Norma, Carla Schwab, Mr. Dawson, Terry Sheffer, Cedric, Mike Berkholder, and Student Di- rector, Brenda Crowell. Penny was a bright and lively story of a charming miss, who had her own means of attaining her ends. She had modern parents, who looked terribly old-fashioned to Penny and her friends. The havoc that Penny raised lasted three action-filled, fun-provoking acts. What she did, in all sly innocence, was stir up a fued between the boys and the girls of the school, a fued that spread into the adult pop- ulation of the whole town, and into her father's newspaper office. Penny was amazed at the conflict she found and became enmeshed in it herself -to the chagrin of her boy friends, girl friends, parents, faculty, and neighbors. The student body wishes to con- gratulate the Senior Class on their fine production. O ml O Celebrations during the Christmas date back to pre- historic times, particularly among the Teutonic peoples of northern Europe. Naturally these remote ancestors of ours were not observing the birth date of Christ. At the winter sols- tice IDecember QI or QQI, hearalding the beginning of longer days, they held ceremonies to their sun gods. They called the month Yule, 'or .lol, from which comes the word jolly. EARLY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS Christ's nativity was not celebrated during the first centuries of the Christian era. But by the middle of the 4th century, the Church had sanctioned December 25 as the othcial date for Christmas. To the ancient folk celebration - feasting, dancing, games, and singing - the Church added its own ceremonies. In time, Christmas came to be accompanied by much ribaldry and drinking. In 1644 the Puritans in England banned Christmas excesses. For over a century Christ- mas merriment went into decline. ORIGINS OF MODERN CUSTOMS Early in the I9th century came a revival of keen interest in celebrating Christmas. The publication in T843 of Dickens' Christmas Carol, with its emphasis on love for one's fellow man, had much to do with this re- vival. New elements, such as the Christmas tree, helped give Christmas its modern shape. It is said that Martin Lu- ther introduced the Christmas tree lighted with candles in the Ioth century. I-lowever, the custom of decorating trees goes back to 8th-century Germany. It was brought to the United States by German immigrants, and to England, in I84O, by Prince Albert, the German hus- band of Queen Victoria. A second new element was the Christmas card. This was an English invention of the I84O's'which became wide spread in Christian lands. To the Dutch colonists in New York we owe the Christmas stocking and the idea of St. Nicholas, to them a kind bishop bringing presents to good children. It is to Clement Clark Moore's The Night Before Christ- mas, published in I823, that we owe much of the fairy- tale conception ot Santa Claus. In such ways as these, the celebration of Christmas has come down to us with ceremonies and customs bor- rowed from distant times and different peoples. My parents live in Selzkammergut, the Austrian lake district. There we own a house half way up the mountain point. It would be a real quiet spot if I had not little brothers and sisters. The youngest is nine years old. Her name is Gerlind. Then there are Gunter and Giselher, two boys eleven years old. They are all three real nuts. My older brother Ger- not is 22 and Dietlind, my older sister, is twenty. We six don't tight each other too often because we are only together during vacations, Nearly everyone of us studies in a different town. The last five yers I went to 'Frauenobersthule' in Salzburg, Aus- tria's famous festival town. I shared a room with two classmates, Though school kept us rather busy, we had a lot of fun. There were only girls in our school. After having passed a difficult grad- uation examination they all felt sorry for leaving what they felt they couIdn't stand before. Suddenly I felt sorry for leaving, but I value the privilege I had to be one more year a high school stu- dent, this time in America. When I came over I knew that this year I am spending here is going to be an unforgettable exper- ience, All the kids in my section will know that I enioy being to- gether with them. I found some differences in customs here but believe people have the same problems everywhere. One thing is for sure, there is nothing more wonderful than being an exchange stu- dent. I am translating the first few sentences for you in German: Ich bin West York Austauschstudent, und gedermann sollte wissen dass ich es wirklich geniesse. Ich kam von Oesterreich. Meine Eltern wohnen im Selzkammergut, iesterreichs Seen- bezirk. Gelt Suserle, du verstehst. When we asked Gudrun to write an article on the Glasgow family, she did not hesitate. This is the story as Gudrun tells it. My American FamiIy? f I could not have a better one! I like them all. My new mother patiently introduced me to The Life of the New World. She is a good mother. Not only that, she is also an excellent Girl Scout leader. The little kids like her. She has a wonderful memory. For instance - if I forget my gym towel she is the one re- minding me in the morning - good for me! Then there is my American daddy. His hobbies are the boy scouts and the Church. I-le likes to take his young fellows camping every time he gets off from work. Of course, I have to mention his skill in putting little trains together. I love watching him doing that. I would also like to be able to clean shoes as shiny as he does. Linda is my Junior-sister. Naturally she is also a scout. But, boy, is she good at school! She got a dis- tinguished honor card. I am glad she can always tell me how to spell words I don't know. She not only has brains, she also has a lot of sports-spirit. If there is any sport to participate in, Linda is the first one there. She is one of our best volleyball and field-hockey players. I am looking forward to seeing her as mother in the Junior Class Play. My little sister Alice is a real cute nut. She is doing a good iob at school and at scouts. If you think she is quiet when she is asleep, you are wrong! Even then she is rolling around making strange sounds. She has a lot of friends because of her warm natural personality. We often have a ball dancing rock'n'roII together. - That is my American family, a family which likes to go camping, a family with a lot of idealism. Most wonderful of all is, that I feel I belong to them. They make my year here one I will always remember! -I ,kwa , ,. .,,,., , r TTT? - i','f. Q'-QM -kb-x T .4 . ? T213 . Working diligently at camp at Indian Town Gap for one week the boys became a fat determined squad, one which was ready for all comers. This aggressiveness earned for the Bulldogs highly prized victories over Susquehannock, Kennard Dale, Spring Grove, Dallastown, Central, Southwestern, a tie with Littlestown while Surburban, Conestoga Valley and Red Lion had to go all out to stop the Bulldogs. The T961 Bulldogs record of 6-3-l was the best turned out by the school in recent years. They provided us many thrills due to excellent blocking and broken field running. And who will forget the stone wall defense set up by the rugged West York line. Success in football cannot be measured by wins or losses. The yardstick is sportsmanship, team work and spirit. This years addition of the Bulldogs have proven that all these' goals have been accomplished to the utmost here at West York. 108 Qcows Conestoga Valley 19 West York York Surburban l5 West York Susquehannock O West York Littlestown 6 West York Kennard-Dale l3 West York Southwestern 7 West York Dallastown 14 West York Spring Grove O West York Central O West York Red Lion 14 West York 0 Tom Trone - A cat on defense . . . one of the best in the league - all-conference. Ever since then, distance run- ning has been an important part of track, Greek run- ners trained all year for one week of competition in the Olympics. Their races were usually twenty-six miles in length. Today, however, the race is run over a course approxihtately two to three miles long. Our course is slightly over two miles and starts and finishes at the school. This year we had sixteen men participating in cross- country. This is quite an improvement over last year when we had only the needed eight, instead of running league this year, we had an exhibition schedule. Dallas- town, York Surburban, Red Lion, Central, and York High are the schools against whom we ran this year. This year's cross country team has finished the regular season with a 4-4 record. Terry ShaFfer, Glenn Shirey and .laye Shearer were the big point men on the team, which was streamlined in mid season to include only the better seniors and the more promising juniors and sophomores. The cheerleaders act as a binding organization which helps our student body get to know the teams. With this togetherness the teams feel that they have someone boosting them. The cheerleaders shovv this by sponsoring pep rallys, bonhres, and special parades. We owe o great deal to these girls who have devoted their time and ettort in producing greater school spirit. vmzfg f jf 1+ X ' , 5, S I fy, . X4 J ,, ,M x 4? ! Butter used to be placed on the table. Now we have it in pats. Why? . . . A new phone booth was erected outside, and stop signs added at all possible places . . . We finally had a new score board for our football games. Now we need lights so we can have night games . . , New seventh graders over ran the school making already crow- ded conditions worse . . . The boys formed the Rah Rah Rhee Club. Mr. Goodling cloesn't want them to hold their meetings at the river. Favorite cheer of the club is: Rah Rah Rhee, kick them in the knee, Rah Rah Rass, kick them in the other knee. The extravagant cheerleaders bought new uniforms. They began to cheer at wrestling matches . . . We are on our way to thirty. FADS AND FASHIONS Girls wore one or three strapped capezios or ltalian loafers. Culottes and skirts with knee highs and pleated skirts were popular. Bulky sweaters, crew neck cardigans, and v-neck sweaters were in. Furry hats were popular, worn over short bubble cuts . . . Boys wore tab shirts, v-neck sweaters, and goal coats . . . Out of school they wore cut- off sweat shirts and Varsity club jackets . . . The twist, started last year, really caught fire this year . . . Boys did their own type circle dance in the lobby during the lunch periods with no one daring to enter the center of it . . . The postman can make it through rain, snow, sleet, or hail, but not through the boys' circle. SENIOR DOlNGS The senior class play Penny really cost 501 for students. The title was misleading . . . In autumn senior biologists had to go hunting for frogs . . . Visiting the haunted house was popular with some of the seniors . . . Lattuca wrapped his car around a pole. Shirley l-lanline ran into a brick wall and a parked car . . . Joye Lynne's Spirit got smashed by an ex-senior at West York . . . in that order . . . Donald Firestone for- got to breathe . . . SPORTS Tom Trone and Terry Sheffer made all Conference after their fine football perform- ances . . . Everyone feared the basketball team would be minus one competent player lThanks to the school board it isn't.i . . . We had the best football team in about seven years . . . Mr. Goodling's only chance to hold the trophy was when he walked out on the Held to present it to the Red Lion Principal . . . Some students went to York Sur- burban to decorate. The front lawn was festooned with bathroom tissue and signs. Too bad they got the license number! . . . Football players became wrestlers with the change of the seasons , . . The wrestling team is going to go all the way this year. All the coaches, players, officials, and students agree the school spirit has increased immensely even though the uncouth article of the Barker's unknown editor disputes this . . . Due to the absence of Andy Anderson and Larry Knipple the Bulldogs started the season os Bullpups and ended up as roaring Bulldogs. . . LOCAL HAPPENINOS The New York Junior College was completed . . . The building of the new osteopathic hospital was undertaken . . . For the second consecutive year, the Republicans swept traditionally Democratic York County in the general election. Junior drivers' licenses were issued to all Pennsylvania drivers under age eighteen . . . The new College Avenue Bridge was opened in early December. 118 IN THESE UNITED STATES The members of President Kennedy's Peace Corps received their first taste of life in underdeveloped countries. Astronaut Alan Shepard became the United States first spaceman. Fall-out shelters are becoming as much a part of our lives as the all-American hot dog. The nation mourned the death of Mr, Sam Rayburn, Speaker of the House of Representatives. Gay parties were once again held at Mount Vernon as the Kennedy's entertained foreign leaders. Vice-president Johnson invited a camel driver to leave his herd and tour the United States in an automobile. That precocious child in the White House, Caroline Kennedy, informed the nation that her daddy was iust sitting there with his shoes off, doing nothing. Meanwhile, brother John celebrated his first birthday. The secret Service can protect the President from all hazards except those of his daughter, Caroline. The high-back rocking chair is once again an essential part of every well-furnished American home. Severe forest Hres caused an unestimated amount of damage in California. United Nations Secretary-general, Dag Hammersikold, perished in a plane crash over Africa. Gone with the Wind was once again presented in theaters throughout the country. The middies defeated Army I3-7 in the annual battle at Philadelphia. The World Council of Churches is meeting this year in New Delhi, lndia. Sir Winston Churchill celebrated his eighty-seventh birthday this year. Top Cat and Yogi Bear hit a new high. Castro finally admitted that he is a Communist, through and through. Enos, a five year old chimp, was the first American to orbit the earth. Echo l is still orbiting the earth, though some what meteor beaten. Roger Maris hit sixty-one home runs in one hundred and sixty-one games, thereby establishing a new record. However, he did not break Babe Ruth's record of sixty runs in a one hundred and fifty-four game season. J, Edgar Hoover, Director of the Federal Bureau of investigation, was granted the Criss award, thereby receiving the same recognition as such other great recipients as Dr. Jonas Salk and Dr. Thomas Dooley. Dr. Thomas Dooley, the famed Medical missionary who received world recognition for his work in Loas, died at the age of 34, in January l96l. The assassination of Truiillo, the dictator of the Dominican Republic, left the future of that country in a doubtful condition. 119 I fl V A' z.,d A SH , , :2'.9::f ' fxg ,Q Q , 157 K Q M xmas 7- tax Y 1. 1' 44 -56. f ' 1 L E, MJSQB3, ,,.j:-'id ' , If ,. ... .f . ,, ,M . .. ...
