U DERSTA DI G OURSELVES J. WESLEY WISE Social Studies Chair- man, P.O.D.5 Ameri- can Historyg Yearbook Advisor, Steering Com- mittee. ALLAN E. ZINN Handwriting, History, Geography, Jr. Red Cross. SOCIAL STUDIES The preservation of our democratic culture, at a time when it is meeting its greatest chal- lenge, requires the development of an informed, vital, and active citizenship. An individual 'who understands and appre- ciates democratic values, who gets along well with himself and other people, who works for constructive social purposes and who can ad- just to changing conditions and develop his own maximum potentialities will be a worthy citizen and will enjoy a sense of direction and a feeling of security. The development of these citizenship behav- iors is a major problem of social education. In- struction should be pointed directly toward developing, fortifying, and changing youth's ways of thinking, feeling, and acting in accord with the democratic ideal. THOMAS T.
