Class History What we thought we knew and what we had to learn happened to be quite different: Seventh Grade Seeing these great, big, happy-go-lucky seniors makes us pray for the day when we will be 12th graders. Eighth Grade Aren't these seventh graders small this year? we remark. We all have our experiences with Mr. Richards and Mr. Zinn to help keep our eighth grade more interesting. And then we have our class trip to the Gettysburg Battlefield. Fourscore and seven years ago . . . W, recites Mr. Richards Qquoted from Abe's addressj. We all had a good time on the mis-guidedw bus trip. we finish this year by going to the Chocolate Town tflershey Parkj for a day. Ninth Grade We have our first experiences with foreign lan- guages, civics, typing, algebra, and Mr. Beckmyer. This is our decisive year because we have to choose whether we will prepare for college or for the busi- ness world. You remember when Pat Murphy was so emotionally touched with Mr. Beckmyer's experi- ment with electricity, that she cried. Shocking! , wasnit it? Ask Pat! We will never forget our algebra classes with Mr. Wearz my class? Kopp. Last, but not least, we get our ninth grade diplomas and graduate into senior high. Tenth Grade Sophomores we call ourselves. Going Steady tif not already started last yeari goes even deeper this year. We will never forget those Uroyaln times we had with Miss Bender tnow Mrs. Golgenj in her Biology or Facts of Life classes. We are getting some school responsibility in our laps this year by participation in: plays, sports, and school govern- ment. Eleventh Grade Graduation time is nearing. Most of us have driver's licenses this year and are lead-footing it around the high school oval', impress'n the girls and Officer Shultz. School work, as it does every year, is getting more difficult. We meet physics, French, shorthand, and Mr. Brown. Our basketball team wins the York County Scholastic Basketball Championship. The Flu Bug bites, and school closes a few days due to heavy absences. Heavy snowfalls also force the education factory to shut down for a few days. Some of the Business Education boys are forever taking vacations and Mr. Goodling is happy to extend their vacations with expulsions from school. The Junior Class Play Onions In The Stew goes off with a bang. The academics send in their college applications with high hopes near the end of this year. School is ended with a Junior Class V U0N'T WORRY CATS, T145 BEARD I5 A PIIONEY, THIS QQT-UP IS SUPPOSE TO MAKE ME LQOK une A i+tsT0t21AN ak ionamin' trip to Washinglin, D. C., led by Mr. Wise. Ron Myers falls asleep when attending a House of Rep- resentatives session. Some athletic onesi' climb the Washington Monument, by the stairs. Fay Wel- comer is having troubles', on the return trip home, so when the bus driver learns of her plight, he kindly stops the bus convoy and Fay steps off the bus and occupies a filling-station restroom. Now we wait until next year when wc will enter our senior year in the new high school building. OUT OF THE OLD-INTO THE NEW Twelfth Grade This is itg our last year. We are the first class to be graduated from our new school, which has been under construction for a few years. These are hectic days in our new school, unfamiliar environment makes us lose our way to classes. Many new faces, student's and teacher's, are seeng new classes ap- pear, such as: Planning For Marriage and Auto Mechanics. Another new addition is a Senior Glass Play- Out of the Frying Pani'-which is pre- sented in our own auditorium and not the gymna- siuml tRemember the catsup bathw Rachael got?i Football, basketball, wrestling, track, and baseball all go by as we seniors participate for our last time. Chemistry, office practice, and trigonometry offer no let-down until finally-we graduate! Yes, June is here and we have our commencement, baccalau- reate, and our dinner-dance. All these things are memories now, many of which you will forget, but some you will always re- member. Starting from seventh grade, some class- mates have quit, moved away, or passed away, while some have moved in with us. Here in twelfth grade is the finished product, processed from the raw material, to go into life with the basic essentials needed to do our part along-side mankind, with our ticket to anywherev-our West York Area High School DIPLOMA. But don't think for one minute these boys didnlt work. Under the superb guidance of Thomas Heckard, backfield coachg Herbert Schmidt, line coachg and Kenneth Uber, assistant line coachg the Bulldogs labored valiently. However, records don,t show everything. The self-discipline, body co-ordina- tion, and sportsmanship that these boys have shown will mean much in their future years. Congratulations to Ronald Keister who was selected All Conferencel' Tackle, and David Smith who was given the most valuable player award. Of course, we would like to express our appreciation to all the seniors and underclassmen who have so willingly given their time and effort for their High School. The team made a good try. though, and hnished second place with a 10 and 4 record in the Northern Division of the York County Reserve League. The main factor that makes a good team is teamwork. Surely, these fellows have displayed much ot' this through the year. The astonishing thing about the Reserves' record is that every league game they lost was on an opponents court. Top individual scorers were Taylor Ranker, and Barry March. Tim Wolf, Larry Walker. Bill Hopple, and Frank Rizzuto were others who had lots of spirit and hustle. Congratulations to Coach Heekard and his JV,s for their fine performance. 102 JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL W.Y. OPP. .. Edgar Fahs Smith .... .....60 34... ... Lack of experience was one of the many problems the Bulldogs had to endure. However, with experi- enced coach, James Jordy, the Junior Bulldogs quickly learned the fundamentals of basketball. They didn,t reach the top, but their spirit and the will to win seemed to satisfy Mr. Jordy. The tough breaks were also prevalent in this year's stiff 18 game schedule. Five heartbreaking games were lost by 1, 2, and 5 points. Leading the boys in hustling and scoring were: Crisamore, Cerrick, and Williams. Shearer, Shen- berger, and Walker also showed good signs of talent. Most of these boys will be looking forward to play- ing senior high ball next year, and we wish them the best of luck. 103 JUNIOR HIGH RESERVES This year the Junior High Bullpups under the di- rection of Coach Jordy won two of their four games scheduled. In the beginning of the season it seemed that they could not get together. They lost their first two games to E. F. Smith and Spring Grove. Deter- mination was the main factor that led the Bullpups to beat Northeastern 29-21 and Kennard-Dale 24-22. Individual high scorers were Williams with 32 points for the year, followed by Folkomer and Young. However, winning games is not the main objective. Some of the boys played basketball for the first time, therefore it was necessary to learn the basic funda- mentals of basketball. Coach Jordy seemed to do a very excellent job with these boys. Surely, the outlook lor a future championship team, is very promising. W.Y. OPP 20 ..... .... E .F. Smith... ....27 19 ..... .... S pring Grove .... .... 2 4 29 ..... .... The determination to try to make wrestling a more popular sport at West York High seemed to fade away as the season drew to a close. Despite the record of 3 wins and 8 de- feats 14 ol' which were exhibition meetsl, the wrestlers worked hard. Remember, The reeord not always denotes the magnani- mity ol' success. Five seniors will be departing from the varsity squad. They are: Herb Yost. 103 lb.. and Captain Donald Lookingbill. 120 lb., Darrell Sloan, 127 Ili., Ronald Mummert, 145 lb., and ,lohn Hopplc, 154 lb. class. However, West York will be back lighting next year with experienced men like Trone. Campbell, Patterson, Cillmore, Richard and Fred Enterlinc, and Donald and Roger Murphy. 'l'he top individual scorer this year was Herb Yost, 103 lb. class, with an amazing record ol' 10 wins and one defeat. Right behind him was the 4 year varsity boy, Don Lookingbill. Don won 9 and lost 2. Although these two boys did show such mag- nificent reeords, we must not forget the other boys who tried their best. Wrestling in future years at West York High will improve with the Fine leadership of Coach Robert Brown and Mr. Ober. We need one more thing to make this prophesy come true, and that is the lull support ofthe student body. OPP. W.Y. OPP. ,...'kCentral .. .........26 14, . . . .Biglervilla-. .. ...24 ..,. There are many newcomers as well as veterans to this year's squad. Track around West York is very seldom men- tioned, yet it is one of the major sports ofthe world. This yearls team, under the leadership of head coach Herbert Schmidt, who is really putting everything he has and more into making track a major sport, will consist of individual competition in such events as contests of speed, high jumping, shot-put, discus, javelin and pole vaulting which is something new added to this yearis team. We are expecting some record breaking and hope to make some new ones. Boys who sing their swan song this year are: Becker, Cash, Leathery, Myers, Ernst, lVloramarco and Young. As in Ancient Greece and Rome, let's support our team, and help them bring home the wreath ot' victory. 108 The baseball team of 1959 under the di- rection ot' new eoaeh Dave Watkins has been working very hard and dilligently preparing for the forth coming season. The 4-apable players that we have lost through graduation last year are: Captain, Al Moul, Sam Jannetta, Ron Henst, Bob Cun- net, and Barry Fry. However, with eight lettermen return- ing this year, Coach Watkins is looking for a very profitable season. They are: Seniors-,lay Arnold, Mike Ketterman, Reid Miller, Dave Smithg Juniors-George Garrett, Garry Ginter, Larry Walker, and Bob Markle. Surely a big thank you is in order for all these fellows, who play Ameri- ea's most outstanding sport, but are given little acknowledgment for their splendid work at West York.
