You've readied us for years ahead, and now these dear old walls Will see another take our place, anon our future calls. ln seventh grade we dimly saw the things which fate could do. In eighth we learned a little more, but still we scarcely knew Just what our high school meant to us. And then ninth came along And we began to realize you taught us right from wrong. In tenth, at last in senior high, we set our standards high. We chose the bright and bold red rose to be our flower for aye. Our motto taught us how to Make new friends but keep the old, And we know our colors blue and gray will lead to deeds untold. As Juniors we were proud to know that we were on our way To futures which looked cheerier with every com- ing day. Then, too, this grade has left us with fond mem- ories of two Inspiring members 'til their death, and now are missed by classmates true. Our Senior year-our last with you, was quite the best, we know. We can't forget the many things which helped it quickly go. But now, alas, we must depart, and start a life anew. In doing this we can't forget the friends we've made through you. May we iust say in passing, that although we must depart. The memories of our school days will long linger in each heart. For through the will and grace of God, we've learned what we should know, And this will quide us capably wherever we may go. CLASS SONG 1958 to tune of Autumn Leaves ' Dear West York High as we now leave three, Your fondest memory endears Those fun-filled days, those happy moments Have helped us all, now parting nears. As we say goodby to classmates true And duty calls from care-free days As we look back through the years we've spent here Your memories will guide our ways Goodby to you dear Alma mater For time has come, we must depart We've lived to learn, and learned to live here Thoughts of West York enrich each heart. Beyond the Book-ends be roads of duty We'lI treasure as the days go by- All the knowledge, friendships, ioy and beauty Farewell to you dear West York Hi. 35 MEMCRIAM l cannot say, and l will not say That they are dead,-they are just away! With a cherry smile, and a wave of the hand, They have wandered into an unknown land, And left us dreaming how very fair lt needs must be, since they linger there, And you, O you, who the wildest yearn For the old-time step and the glad return,- Think of them faring on, as dear ln the love of there as the love of here, Think of them still as the same, l say, They are not dead-they are just away! 36 nrt' 9' at During the summer of 1957 Harriet Moul and Samuel Glessner were taken from our class. Their tragic deaths shocked and saddened those who knew them. Though they were destined not to remain with us until graduation, they will always remain in our hearts as a member of our class of 1958. The grid iron season here at West York held many surprises for our bulldogs-mostly un- pleasant ones. Under the fine leadership of head coach Don Kocher, with Tom Heckard and Herb Schmidt contributing very commend- able assistance, our bulldogs were picked as Littletown's heaviest opponent for the confer- ence Championship. However, old Lady Luck turned her back upon our team this year and gave them a rather disastrous record of l win, 6 losses, and l tie. Our tie with Littlestown was a ter- rific moral victory for our boys as they spoiled Littlestown's perfect record, and forced them into sharing the Championship with Susque- hannock. Gary Kerr, as in the past, proved to be the real workhorse of the squad. Moose Mun- dorf also showed that he had the true play- ing spirit, as both were named members of the Laurel Conference all-Star Squad. The coaches will have a tremendous iob facing them next year, for the graduation losses are heavy. Boys who sang their swan song this year are: Kerr, Mundorf, Big Dave Smith, Hartsough, Schrum, Spangler, Bubb, Cable, Jannetta, and Butch Maul. However, we have faith in our coaches and bulldogs, and are counting on a much better season next year. SCORES W.Y. OPP. 6... .... York B ....... . ...l3 7. . . .... Under the direction of Coach Thomas Heckard, the team paced by halfback Steve Shy- rock were a threat to every team they played. Although they do not receive as much credit as the Varsity, they are a very important part of the football program. These sophomores and freshmen worked very hard for Coach Heckard and their record showed it. When the Varsity lost to Kennard-Dale, the J V's decided to show no pity on their first opponentsg and they didn't. The score was 51 to O, favor West York. Next year there will be a new squad of freshmen and sophomores eager to learn all they can under the coaching of Mr. Heckard. Congratulations to Coach Heckard and his squad of Bullpups. RECORD W.Y. This year's team started out with a bang by defeating our York Catholic foes by 7'l to 43. Three years ago this same team won the Junior High Championship, and the year after that, practically the same team, again won the Senior High J. V. Championship. This record shows that this team was destined to top all teams. Captained by Albert butch Maul the team showed they were capable to be County Cham- pions although ata few times the Championship looked a little dim. After losing to Spring Grove 48 to 50, there was more fight then, than it ever was in the team. This year West York entered the Spring Grove Invitational Tournament. Delone Catholic was the first team to lose to the Bulldogs K48-341. Next the Bulldogs met York Catholic for the third time this year. Everyone knows the outcome of the first Eastern game. This was the night Eastern played the best game they ever played. This game was taken in strugle, and later that season the Bulldogs showed everyone that Eastern also can be beaten when the game is played on a different court. Sometimes when a team wins a championship the coach is sometimes forgotten. Mr. Bupp did a very good iob of coaching the Bulldogs on to victory. The Students did a good iob of backing the team. Wherever West York played, there was a crowd of spectators from West York. Congratulations to Mr. Bupp and his York County Basketball Champions. OPP. 71 .,,,.......... JUNIOR HIGH VARSITY This year our iunior bulldogs combined their basketball talents, spirit, and teamwork to produce a team which made their fellow West Yorkers proud. Bat- tling against the two worst foes in the game-lack of height and experience-the team's members can hold their heads high for doing a fairly good iob. Although no championship or other big glories were won by the team, they showed a real will to win. Leading the boys in hustling and scoring were: T. Ranker, Dale Markel, Frank Rizzuto, all freshmen, and two very promising eighth graders, Crissamore and Walker. Next year coach Altland will have another rebuilding job facing him, but we know that if everyone co-operates as well this year, the team may be able to go all the way. This year at West York there was a big change in wrestling. Under the fine coaching technique of Mr. Brown, our grapplers made a fine showing of themselves and boosted the number and morale of the fans. One of the big factors in the team's fine record of 6 wins and 4 losses was the return- ing of 6 varsity lettermen from last year's team. Due to the fact that our boys were rela- tively light, coach Brown stressed the basic moves and speed to make up for weight. This plan of operation seemed to pay oft, for all of our boys did well, including the first year men. Tracing the name of West York into the higher paths of glory were two experienced seniors, Eaton and Kerr. Eaton, wrestling in the 154 lb. class, became the sectional cham- pion. Kerr, wrestling in the l65 lb. class, was runnerup in the sectionals, where he defeated his only conqueror of the season in the semi- finals. Losses by graduation will be heavy, for Shaffer, Eaton, Kerr, and Spangler wrestled their last high school matches this year. How- ever, we are eagerly looking forward to a new and capable team next year. W.Y. The team had real teamwork that brought them the championship trophy with 12 wins and 0 losses. With their fine coach Miss Dorothy Ilgen- fritz, and three years of hard work plus Marilynn Kottcamp's constant hard work as captain, our girls again brought home the bacon.
