Sf. 'CLASS SON G As we say farewell to classmates As we journey on our way And we will not forget you With our memories so gay! For we re parting now today We've learned to live together In a stronger, finer way As the class of '57 Goes on to greater heights We know that West York High School Was Q! Seventh grade meant much to us, A new life to unfold, Eighth grade still had twice the thrill, With more things yet untold. Along came ninth, a choice we made, Our colors would be blue and gold, Our motto and our own class flower, The red rose bright and bold. a pillar of light. 1 YEAR BY YEAR by SUZAN ZECH And then in tenth we had to know The course we would pursue, Till the end of our eleventh year We didnit think we'd get through. And then came twelfth, the very last, Our life and knowledge really grew, The six happy years we spent in West York Had come to an end, we knew. So, as the Class of Fifty-Seven Breaks apart by years and miles We'll all recall our happy times, And cherish them with smiles. 42 HISTORIAN'S REPORT Here we are at last, after 6 years of hard work, in Junior High School. Oh, the fun at that 7-2 swimming party, when someone used the badmitton racket for a baseball bat. Eighth grade and our trip to Gettysburg. fThose horrible baked beans.J By the way did Mr. Richards ever find out who threw that crayon in his history class? The choosing of our class colors, motto, and our class flower. Remember Mr. Kopp's famous phrase, It's glaring at you. Picking out our class rings meant even more fun. Those Biology classes when we dissected those worms. The water battle outside of room 20, the lastvday of school. The fun with our two new teachers: Mr. Shellhammer and Mrs. Petru. Our junior class trip to Washington. None of us will forget the fun we had that day. The physics lab. when Sally and Henrietta blew up the thermometer. The hard work we put into our Jr. Class Play, Every Family Has One. Finally the time has come: we are seniors at last. With it came more responsibility and more fun. Sharing the joy of the new diamonds with our engaged girls. The book-keeping problems and the unknowns that kept us worried until the last bell had rung. The writing of the class song, making plans for the future. Baccalaureate and commencement brought us closer to our parting moments. Our class trip to New York marked the final get-together of the class. Each of us going our own way, but never forgetting those wonderful days at WEST YORK HIGH SCHOOL. 43 POPULARITY MOST POPULAR Lois Julius and Jacob Hoover MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Henrietta Kohr and Fred Mumrnert PEPPIEST Nancy Kopp and Robert Gantz BIGGEST TEASE Nancy Kopp and Robert Miller MOST POLITE Henrietta Kohr and Fred Mummert Susan Zech and Nelson Klinedinst TALLE ST 44 BEST DRESSED Jane Raffensperger and Fred Mummert QUIETE ST Bryan Smith, Thelma Brokenshire, and Larry Zearfoss SHORTE ST Trulymae Olewiler and Jerry Gingerich Ll N D E R C L A S S M E N JUNIGRS Gary Cable, Dave Smith, Al Maul, Ned Thomas, Mr. Beckmyer. VARSITY FOOTBALL Head Coach Don Wissinger and Line Coach Don Kocher were greatly assisted by Tom Heckert, Bullpup mentor, and former star of Millersville. Co-captains Jake Hoover and Glenn Bowman lead the attack against the first foe of the season, York Hi B Squad. The Bulldogs battled to the end, but dropped a close decision. The game was not entirely insignificant for Bowman suffered an ankle injury that plagued both he and the squad for the remainder of the season, mainly Littlestown when another close decision was lost. Partially retaliated, the Bulldogs invaded Susque- hannock and battled to a scoreless deadlock. Again injury struck, Jake Hoover received a serious head injury that also influenced later contests, including a tie with Biglersville and losses to York Catholic and Red Lion. The Bulldogs were not to be out- done, however, and demonstrated definite superi- ority over Dallastown, Kennard Dale, and Warwick Union. If you ask a coach, What makes a champion squad, nine times out of ten, he will first mention an element called teamwork. Teamwork, a key factor in any organization, is what influenced the 1956-1957 Varsity Basketball Squad toward a most profitable season, much to the surprise of many. The Bulldogs, laxed in experience, coupled team- work, spirit, and the products of fine coaching to turn out a most successful season record. They were in the running to the last encounter in a tight league. Paced by the scoring of Al Maul and Gary Goose Cable, the driving of Captain Glenn Bowman, and the support of Dirty Davev Smith, Fred Mummert, Ray Knaub, Ronnie Creasy Shaeffer, Jake Hoover, Phil Ort, and Jack Neal, the Bulldogs finished with an overall 15-7 record. Singing their swan song are Bowman, Mummert, Hoover, Ort, and Neal, but leaving behind a nucleus squad for next year, rich in experience and rewarding accomplishment. Coach Tom Heckard, a newcomer to West York, took the reins of our Senior High High Reserves and molded them into fine shape and a winning season. The Bulldog Reserves boast a season record of 15-3, and a partnership for top honors with Central. This marks a follow-up to last year's undefeated season and championship. The bulk of point making and ball handling was carried by Ray Ernst, Sam Jannetta, Ed King, Bruce Hartsough, Hoppy Hopkins, and LaForrester Todd. However, we cannot forget their indispensable team-mates who constantly encouraged and provided the competition that formed and maintained fighting spirit that all champions must have. Our hats off to the up-and-coming cagers and Coach Heckard for a fine showing. 89 Junior High Varsity and Reserve Basketball First Row: George Martz, William Hopple, Barry King, Donald Eisenhart, Barry March, John Garrett. The future for our track team this year looks very bright. There are many new- comers on the team and all the boys are attired in brand new uniforms. These fel- lows are seldom mentioned, and they really deserve recognition. This spring sport con- sists of individual competition, such as high jumping, shot-put, discus, javelin and tests X of speed. We are expecting some record breaking and hope to make some new ones. f As in Ancient Greece, let's support this dis- play of skill, and help our boys bring home the laurel wreath. 94 GOLF -m,,, .-1? EVERY FAMILY HAS ONE The Reardons, a typical American family, whose hilarious eccentricities are only normal. Laura, the mother, is deliriously happy be- cause she has engineered a match between her daughter, Marcia, and wealthy Sherwin Parker. Penelope, the youngest Reardon, is a demon with a sling-shot and piano. Warry, the only son, is positive he is an up-and-coming author. Reginald, the father, prefers automobiles to tinker tape, and Nana, the grandmother, has two concerns, Bing Crosby and getting rid of the Parkers. She succeeds with the help of Cousin Lily and a few little lies. Lily agrees to impersonate another Cousin Lily, the skeleton in the Reardon closet. She does so well, re- vealing the Parkers scheme, that they take to their heels in a hurry and Marcia is reunited with Todd, the boy she really loves, and Warry decides that even though his cousin is a bit on the daft side, she is the only girl for him. 100 CAST PENELOPE REARDON ........ Barbara Elliot YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU You can't take it with you is a rollicking comedy depicting life in the home of Grandpa Vanderhoff. The plot evolves around Alice who seems to be the only sane member of the household. She falls in love with Tony Kirby, the son of the boss of a big business enter- prise. Upon arriving unexpectedly with his family, Tony finds the Vanderhoff household spending a quiet evening at home. In this, DePinna is precariously perched atop a peach basket dressed in a Roman toga depicting a discus thrower which Penny is painting. Elsie is trying to dance under the direction of ac- companying them on the Xylophone to the lively tune of chopsticks. A drunken actress friend of Penny's has just passed out on the sofa, and Grandpa is throwing darts. All in all the house is one grand mess. Alice thinks that because of this she shouldn't marry Tony, so she breaks her engagement. But in the end everything works out beautifully, and the Kirby's start to live like the Vanderhoff's. 101 THESPIA PLAY .,' .A 5 ' First Row: Ronald Mummert, John Spillman, JoAnn Hoskins, Jerry Gingerich, Barbara Elliot, Barbara Schwab, Rachael Richards, Beverly Buckmyer. The progeny, however, did not starve-by all means -for with so pleasing a cook as Tom in the house, it was impossible. Some of the methods which were employed by the children, in order to earn money, did not meet with the ap- proval Of a dear relation Cousin Leora.
