Build for character instead of for fame, Our class chose to use as their star, The way will be hard, competition the same, But our ideal will carry us far. When the points have been tallied and life's game is won And we look back to pay tribute where due, The goals we set when the job was begun, Are the stars that have carried us through. Jean Miller and Patricia Martin OUR FAREWELL West York High School, our years with you are through, We'Il remember the days we spent with you. Some High School days were difficult, But most were filled with fun, Ideals you taught have well our lives begun. Good-by, classmates, I hope we meet again, I'll remember each classmate as a friend, West York, we are leaving, So we say adieu, The Class of '56 bids farewell to you. W-e-s-t-Y-o-r-k . . . What does it spell? WEST YORK What does it mean? VICTORY And victory it meant, for the 1955 edition of the Bulldog football team. Although losing their first and last games of the nine-game schedule, the Blue and White team won every other game, thus marking one of the finest years in the history of the West York gridiron. Teamwork was the essential factor determining the seven wins, but there are some boys who have to be mentioned for their outstanding work. For the second time, Captain John Bowman was named the Most Valuable Player and was selected for the All Conference squad. Jack Goodling, who was also chosen for the Laurel team for the second straight year, was invaluable for his all-around performances. Other stalwart runners were Bob Burns and Glenn Bowman, with John Emig leading good interference, and standouts in the line included Jon Myers, Roger Siple, Dan Mitchell, and Gary Kerr. Siple received the Most Valuable Lineman trophy and Mitchell was named to the Conference All-Stars. 86 it QQ, W in. all-1 Rooding Clockwiso From Loft to Right: Jack Goodling, Glenn Bowman, Bob Burns, John Emig, Jake Hoover, Jon Myers, Roger Siple, Gary Cable, Jack Neal, Danny Mitchell. West York Bullpups were down at the field every evening after school working and learning football fundamentals and plays. While the Bulldogs were marking up seven victories against only two losses, the Pups were scrapping for a good season's record of three wins and two defeats. Such members of the team as Ray Ernst, Ronnie Shaffer, Paul Sheffer, and Sam Jan- netto, along with their teammates, should be a terrific boost to the hopes of Coaches Wissinger and Kocher for a championship team next year. For the first time in seven years the Senior High Varsity competed in the championship play-olts. West York's courtmen captured the Northern Divi- sion championship, rolling up victories against stiff competition and suffering only one set-back, to Manchester, a strong contender. However, powerful Eastern won the league championship by defeating the Bulldogs on the York Junior College court, and hard-fighting West York ended the season by being edged out by Pequea Valley in the play-offs. Captained by capable Jim Brenneman, who proved himself a menace to opponents, the team was paced by big Bob Taylor and John set shot Emig, with some outstanding rebound work by John Bowman and Jack Goodling and good all-around playing by Jon Myers. 92 w,v 5I 50 67 55 43 64 70 68 58 53 75 83 58 49 76 57 62 85 62 70 66 39 40 OPPS ,....Susquehannock. . .. .. 45 ...,.Eastern........ ., 47 .,,..RedLion..... .. 38 ....EastBerlin,,.. ,. 44 ....York Catholic, , .. .. 52 ...,,Alumni....,., ., 28 .....Manchester.. ., 63 ,,...Northern..... .. 22 .....Dollastown. . .. . 40 .....York Catholic.. ,. 61 , ,,.. Once again, the West York Senior High Reserves captured a championship for our school. They ended their season with a perfect slate for league competition, achieving a rec- ord of fourteen wins and no defeats. Credit for this spectacular showing must be given to the entire squad because each mem- ber played an important role in making this possible. Goose Cable and Ronnie Shaffer took care of the bulk of the point-making, Skip Smith, Phil Ort, Ray Knaub, and Sam Jannetta were responsible for the ball-handling. This season marks the second consecutive year that these Sophs have boasted such a record, as the boys were also undefeated in the Junior High League last year. With this in mind, we can all look forward to more high honors in the coming years. w.Y 54 38 34 53 43 56 53 54 41 66 48 57 45 65 65 46 69 76 58 64 Susquehannock Eastern ...... Red Lion ..... Ending the season with a fourteen to four record, the squad gained possession of second place, behind Central. Of the four defeats suffered, our boys lost by a mere 'l, 2, 5, and 6 points so that, by a different bounce of the ball, our team could well have been the champions. Eddie King proved to be the most con- sistent scorer, although Ray Ernst, Mike Ketterman, and Tom McWilliams all added many points.
