ALTLAND Uur Student lfnuncil The Department of Public Instruction honored WYHS in selecting West York High School to be one of the three schools to find a school who would exchange a teacher and four students dur- ing Pennsylvania Week: October 13-19, 1952. Seamen Connie Flohr, Henry VVildasin, Larry Spence, and David Coodling and Chief Petty Officer Anna L. Orner exchanged positions with Mr. Lawrence Imboden and four Schuylkill Haven students. As the experiment proved most successful, additional schools will participate next year. True democracy functioned in the Student Council's straw election for a President of the United States in Novemberg and the Council's Christmas Ball added a gay note to the social activties of our ship-WYHS. They have been loaned the apartment of an absent friend. Polly insists on taking her Aunt Effie, because she has never been on a honeymoon. What a time they have in New York! They get in- to the wrong apartment, Aunt Effie and her bedroom vanish during the night. They find them- selves surrounded by a whaeky bunch of people: Miss Tobias, who walks in her sleep, jerk O,Hara, the house detective, Delores, a mysterious Sause American, Mrs. Mood, and the Major, whose baffling actions motivate the play. The apartment overlooks Central Park and entirely unknown to the honeymooners is the head- quarters for a plot to blow up the Mall during the Decoration Day Ceremonies. Complica- tions spread like wildfire. There are plots and counterplots, laughs and thrills until Peter, Polly, and Aunt Effie, after much doing and almost dying, save the day. Yes, we were all aboard the WYHS this fall when another year had come again to serve our faithful ship. Landlubbers, seamen, and yeomen, alike-all had their special duties and each one did them regardless of the moans and groans or the laughter and giggles over how hard or easy his task was. But there was fun as Well as hard work. Many different activities kept our hard working crew racing from lower deck to upper deck and even down to the boiler room. Then there were the sports, and what sports they were! Basketball, foot- ball, wrestling, and baseball-all of them were among the hobbies and favorites pastimes of our energetic crew. Yes, ,twas a busy ship our seamen sailed, but more than that ,twas a ship designed to give her crew character, scholarship, leadership, and service '--1 i D gssak Ag---P Tb- if 1 V F 0 9 , 0 O X ' vi .'1,',P' 1. These fellows practiced with the varsity, sticking it out until their last game in November. Their training primarily centered around fundamentals: how to run, to block, and to tackle. Being in fine shape, the Pups defeated Delone Catholic by a score of 31 to 6. Hard running, good blocking, and hard tackling were characteristic of the Bullpups that after- noon. Broken bones seemed to be the common thing on the varsity squad. Consequently, the Bull- pupsu acted as a supply squad, sending up its best to replace the injured. This injured their own attack, for they lost most of the Mr. Bigsv of their offense. From then on, the Bullpups gave the best they had. Even though the record shows that the boys didn,t do so well in score, they did total many points in the development of co-o peration, sportsmanship, courage, and character. Senior Hiqh Basketball Coach Darwin S. Bnpp After three weeks of practice. the Bulldogs opened the season by defeating East Berlin, Adamis County Champs. 42-41. After winning their first three games. the Bulldogs, season be- came an up-and-down campaign, which ended in fine fashion with victories over their last three opponents. Long remembered will be the Kennard Dale and XVrightsville games, when the former defeated the Bulldogs by one point in the final seconds. with VVest York then turning the trick on VVrightsville by the same margin. With a 10-8 record in League competition and an over-all record of 11-11, they placed fourth in the League. Much of the credit for success goes to set-shot artist Dale Brenneman, Dave Hopkins, Dave Emig, who was also a haWk', on defense. and Nlerv Eisenhart. Dave Little also did a fine job at center. VVest York should be hard to beat next year as but two lettermen graduate: Dave Little and Barry Yost. Bupp selected ten scrappy men to represent the Reserve team after they had spent many weeks in drill and hard practice. Led by Donald Hoskin, their team captain, the small but fighting ten rolled up 13 wins a- gainst 5 losses to earn a second-place berth in their League. One of the games that should be remembered is the one in which our boys upset Manchest- er's winning streak at home by defeating them by an eight-point margin. Probably the team's toughest opponents were North York and Red Lion, who won all of their battles with West York by a very scant margin. Inasmuch as eight of the ten players are sophomores, everyone can look forward to a West York team gunning for high honors in the years ahead. 94 Donald Hoskin tries one as Ronald Trim- mer awaits the outcome at the Red Lion game. Bob Firestone jumps to tap the ball to Don Hoskin and Ken Gerrick at the Ken- nard Dale game, Who has the ball? Kennard Dale or West York? Junior High Varsity Co-champs with Mt. With eight straight wins under their belt. the team looked like a cinch to retain the top hon- ors. Then, an upset by Manchester put the Bulldogs on better guard.
