Nineteen hundred forty eight and West York High School is forty one years old My how time does fiy' Let us look back to the first high school organized in the William Shelly grade bulldlng Only two rooms were needed and the First class to graduate in 1910 had only Five members Compare this with the 1948 graduating class of 110 members The increase shows real progress In March 1926 after obtaining the consent of its citizens West York Bor ough erected a S90 000 high school build ing at the corner of West Philadelphia and Clinton Streets This two story struc ture included fifteen units twelve of which were cl ssrooms The remaining three formed the library office lecture and typewritmg looms In September 1927 350 students moved into the new building where both academic and com mercial courses were offered On January 7 1937. the annex to West York High School. including seven addi- tional classrooms and the Library Cafe- teria. book rooms enlarged furnace room and other smaller units. making a total capacity of 675 pupils. was formally dedicated. The first Blue and White appeared in 1922. growing and winning many national and state awards and honors through thc years until 1942. when it was discontinued because of the scarcity of paper and the manpower needed to pub- lish it. Nineteen hundred forty-two saw many boys leave school to join the armed forces just as other boys had done in 1917 This year 1947 48 the paper was revived with Miss Anna L Morris Miss Elizabeth Senft and Palmer E Poff as advisers Our La Memoria of today is the great grandchild of a commencement number of seventy six pages published by the Blue and White in 1926 Actu yorette appeared in 1927 only to be come The Blue Jay in 1934 The annual has been known as La Memoria since 1937 In 1912 the first basketball team was organized maugurating a sports program on a small scale In 1922 North York Glen Rock Spring Grove Red Lion and West York organized the York County Scholastic Basketball League In 1934 football and wrestling were introduced Today we have a sports program which includes baseball basketball Cboys and girlsj. wrestling football track. and vol- leyball. Besides growing athletically and jour- nalistically we have grown domestically and mechanically. Today we have classes in homemaking. woodcrafts. and metal work and a cafeteria where warm lunches are served. Yes. we have progressed since 1907. but we are certain that the high school of today will seem small to us when we return for our forty-year re- union in 1988. i . st ' ' .
