I 3 , Nineteen hundred forty eight and West York High School is forty one years old My how time does fiy' Let us look back to the first high school organized in the William Shelly grade bulldlng Only two rooms were needed and the First class to graduate in 1910 had only Five members Compare this with the 1948 graduating class of 110 members The increase shows real progress In March 1926 after obtaining the consent of its citizens West York Bor ough erected a S90 000 high school build ing at the corner of West Philadelphia and Clinton Streets This two story struc ture included fifteen units twelve of which were cl ssrooms The remaining three formed the library office lecture and typewritmg looms In September 1927 350 students moved into the new building where both academic and com mercial courses were offered On January 7 1937. the annex to West York High School. including seven addi- tional classrooms and the Library Cafe- teria. book rooms enlarged furnace room and other smaller units. making a total capacity of 675 pupils. was formally dedicated. The first Blue and White appeared in 1922. growing and winning many national and state awards and honors through thc years until 1942. when it was discontinued because of the scarcity of paper and the manpower needed to pub- lish it. Nineteen hundred forty-two saw many boys leave school to join the armed forces just as other boys had done in 1917 This year 1947 48 the paper was revived with Miss Anna L Morris Miss Elizabeth Senft and Palmer E Poff as advisers Our La Memoria of today is the great grandchild of a commencement number of seventy six pages published by the Blue and White in 1926 Actu yorette appeared in 1927 only to be come The Blue Jay in 1934 The annual has been known as La Memoria since 1937 In 1912 the first basketball team was organized maugurating a sports program on a small scale In 1922 North York Glen Rock Spring Grove Red Lion and West York organized the York County Scholastic Basketball League In 1934 football and wrestling were introduced Today we have a sports program which includes baseball basketball Cboys and girlsj. wrestling football track. and vol- leyball. Besides growing athletically and jour- nalistically we have grown domestically and mechanically. Today we have classes in homemaking. woodcrafts. and metal work and a cafeteria where warm lunches are served. Yes. we have progressed since 1907. but we are certain that the high school of today will seem small to us when we return for our forty-year re- union in 1988. i . st ' ' . Yes, the Citamard Society of West York really got around this year. They started the year by inviting the York High Thespians to be their guests for an evening of play acting and reacting. Two one-act plays were presented-West York presenting I'm A Fool, which later placed second in a dramatic contest sponsored by N K J E the State Teachers College, Millersville, Pennsylvania. On january 14, Citamard presented seven skits, each directed by a member of the club, for their assembly program. During the two weeks preceding the pres- entation of the annual production - this year, Don't Take My Penny -the cast and stage crew, literally, lived at 1731 West Philadelphia Street but they enjoyed every minute of it. ai . Accurate and active performances is the main objective of the Drum Majorettes. Therefore, the squad practiced hour after hour to prepare themselves for participation in several parades in the Fall. Football practice began two weeks before school opened, and West York's team was all set for its first game with Lititz on Sep- tember 13, but the game was canceled by Lititz because of the polio epidemic. The following weeks brought more re- verses, the Blue and White eleven losing to Hummelstown, Enola, and Lemoyne. The Lemoyne game was thought by many West York followers to be the best game of the season, for the Bulldogs held Lemoyne scoreless until the last quarter when Le-A moyne scored two touchdowns and one extra point-predictions had been that West York would lose by four or five touchdowns. The following Saturday, West York, be- hind the talented arm of Glenn Frey and the pass receiving of Wimp Fourhman and Bill Markle, defeated Biglerville. Then Elizabethtown and York Catholic took close decisions from the West Yorkers. The last game-the Red Lion-West York game on November 13, was a thriller from start to finish, our hosts had canceled the game originally scheduled to be played on Saturday, November 8, because of rain. It was again the passing of Glenn Frey and the signal-calling of Don Markey plus a smart forward wall that made the game so exciting. West York scored its last touch- down with 40 seconds to go, Markey going over from the three-yard line. The extra point, an attempted pass, fell short. Though the score at the end of the game was 12-12. it was a moral victory for the Bulldogs, be- cause Red Lion was the undefeated Con- ference Champs. Don Markey, a senior, voted the most valuable player by his teammates, received a permanent trophy. The Dispatch placed Herb Schmidt and Don Markey on their All-County Eleven. Freshmen girls learn to sew. Mr. Douglas shows them how it s do IUEDIIESDIW HT 1:10 As the bells rang on Wednesdays for assemblies, students could be seen rushing down the halls, all heading in one direction -toward the gym. This year's assemblies, for the greater part, were dependent on home rooms. The programs were varied and usually afforded enjoyment to all. Mr. Richards' home room had the Christ- mas assembly, presenting a playlet entitled The Empty Room. Miss Kise took us for a ride on the Podunk Limited. Room 5 and Miss Morris presented Ray Zaner, Poet Scout, who made a recording of several sen- ior students reading their own poems. Since this was leap year, Miss Orner and her Ugangl' from Room 19 decided to show us how the families in Dog Patch live. They told us it was Lee in the bathtub. Was it? This year the School Board elected to pay for all of the special assemblies, so all stu- dents attended these assemblies free of charge. Among these assemblies was Robert Par- shall and his dummy Woody Underwood. Roeland Van Caval with his wooden shoes gave us a A'Glimpse of Holland. On the serious side, Miss Osburn and her Honor Society held their convocation and admitted eleven juniors and seniors. Simplicity Patterns presented a fashion show on the New Look. The clothes were modeled by girls from our own student body. But what the seniors were really looking forward to most was May 26, when they would present their Class Day program, bid- ding goodbye to their friends and classmates. Happy school days.
