Our minds wander back to forty-one, How we laltered and felt so lost, The work and problems that had to be done, The bridges that had to be crossed. Time made us a little bolder, We tried to do what We thought right, We marked our gains in lite's folder, We fought on with all our might. Some succeeded where others failed, We want to remember those, too- Taking both kinds to be unveiled, To make a whole world's review. We're passing to life's great vastness, Not knowing the outcome or why, Striving forever toward happiness- Waiting the World's right reply. Dear West York High, we love you- And all those who helped us through, We'll always be thinking of you, Our last fond farewell to you! Clays Colors Class Flower CHERRY AND GOLD AMERICAN BEAUTY ROSE Class Motto BE THE BEs'r or WHATEVER You ARE Page 28 C0155 Song By IUNE MARKEY AND IOANNE KISSINGER Tune: HOME I Dear West York High, The time to part is here before us, No longer shall we carry on. We say Good-bye, With memories of lun and laughter, That live in our hearts long after we've gone. We'll miss all the teachers and the fun, West York High, you've taught us one by one Dear West York High, Farewell to all we have shared, No other can compare with you. II Memories so dear, We'll hold in our hearts' embraces, With sad and tearful faces, we go. All we have learned, Was gained through your kind endurance, You've given us assurance, we know. Through your lofty portals we have passed, The forty-seven graduating class. Farewell to thee, We'll always be thinking of you, The class of forty-seven loves you, WEST YORK HIGH. Page 29 ivory of the Class 0 I 94 7 ON AUGUST 30, 1943, one hundred forty-six young hopefuls entered West York High School as Freshmen. Timid and shy but, nevertheless, determined, we advanced through the Hallowed Halls of Knowledge. l944 found us filled with even more spirit and determination. Choosing cherry and gold as our class colors and receiving our felt goods made us feel more important than ever. A traditional event of the year was the annual Sophomore Hallowe'en party. The class party at the Kottcamp bungalow ended our Sophomore year. 1945 found us more sure than ever. We were second to the Seniors, and we, as Iuniors, received social prominence such as we had never known. The main event of our Iunior year was the mock wedding assembly program. Another class party at the Kottcamp bungalow ended our Iunior year. 1946, our big year, had finally arrived. There were only seventy-two of us now. Many happy events took place in our Senior year, among which were selling hot dogs and soda at football games, receiving our class pictures, choosing and receiving our announcements and name cards, the editing of La Memoria, and the production of the Senior Class Play, Young April. Our biggest worries consisted of chemistry unknowns and typing budgets, which seemed to be small worries as the end drew nearer. Three events ended our happy days at West York High: Class Day, when the Seniors presented their own program, Baccalaureate Services, and the most memorable and solemn event that rewarded all our efforts-Commencement. Grateful to go out into a world at peace, we bravely, but sadly, bid fare- well to our Alma Mater. BECKMYER THE ELECTION of Iunior Class officers was held at the first class meeting in September. Many plans both social and educational were made for the coming months. In October we traveled to Indian Steps a trip which proved helpful in our study of the early Indian tribes of this locality. During the month of November one could hear the hum and buzz of Iuniors discussing class jewelry. Everyone was happy when the order was received a few days before Christmas. But, the event that gave us the most enjoyment of all was the institution of what we hope will be an annual event, our prom for the Seniors on May lU. At last we have a name all our own and may participate in many activities from which we were barred in previous years. Brown, Kottcamp, and Shelton, most noted for their basketball ability, have played five years of varsity ball in which they have helped to bring three championships to West York. In '43-'44, under coach Charles Rinehart, these boys finished their Iunior High career in first place. This feat Was repeated in Senior High in '45-'46 and again in '46-'47, when Brown and Shelton were co-captains. Brown is known as the floor man who does most of the hand- ling of the ball, Kottcamp as a steady, dependable, good guard, and Shelton the high scorer. These boys also played varsity football and baseball. Bob King, one of the most outstanding wrestlers in the history of West York, lost but four league matches in his three years of varsity Wrestling. ln '44-'45, King suffered four losses in his league matches and was defeated in the finals at the District Meet. During the past two years, he was undefeated in his league matches. In '46, he lost in the preliminaries of the State Finals at State College, and in '47, he was defeated in the State Finals at Kingston 3-2. King's Wrestling record is one that will be difficult to surpass. Page 76 -56. , ' , XX X- 'N , . 3 W1 fy, ' 5 KN Q, .W 44 I I X, fl.. I yhh- Do Co . There were many times during our school days we wished that this word had never been heardg but, in due time, we'll probably all look back and remember them as scenes of happiness with our classmates. As our school days progressed, reading and writing and arithmetic devel- oped into greater and more difficult studies until we were settled down to our own desired courses. In ninth grade, Miss Connor's Latin class could be heard uttering the lines of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star in Latin, as the commer- cials bent over the desks in Room ll to try their luck in the field of mathe- matics. fdsa space, jklg, space, let's try another line of these, was Miss Orner's plea as some of us learned the fundamentals of typewriting and others learned that by adding sodium to chloride, table salt results, which may have been the cause of a faint odor making its way through the halls, and that WO -l- KIS2 will give a violent reaction. Our Senior year brought forth those beloved chemistry unknowns and typing budgets which we thought would never be done. Enacting Macbeth was lots of fun and the shorthand girls looked forward to the next chapter of The Mademoiselle Handbook. Mass basketball caused as much confusion as ever in gym classes as the red and blue teams struggled to outplay each other. P. O. D. class was frequently the scene of a debate between the girls and boys as to who caused the most divorces-the problem never was quite settled. Despite all the work and little difficulties we encountered during these classes, these were the very happenings we'll always remember. Page BU Classes Is anyone m step? This year, as in the preceding year, each room was re- sponsible for an assembly program sometime throughout the school year. Performances were greatly varied, and many original ideas were introduced. It was a more difficult assignment for the seventh graders, who had had little experience of this type, than it was for most of the rest of usp but they pitched right in and helped to make the plan a success. Not only did these assemblies aid the students in getting them to participate before an audience, but it also revealed talents that may have been undiscovered. At the end of the year the judges, who included William Little, Mr. Rine- hart, Mr. Wise, Miss Kise, Miss Gilbert, David Harris, Geraldine Davis, and Phyllis Plath, voted on what they considered the best presentation of the year, and the room was given an ice cream party. The lone rule to be eligible for the judging was that only students Within the designated room could participate. Our one regret was that, due to circumstances beyond our control, Miss Orner and Mr. Thomas could not reveal their appearances at the age of forty-perhaps it is better to just wait and see the real thing. Page 83 Fazflzer Tzhzz' THE BEST and most long to-be-remembered years of our lives are passing by, and we are ready now to face the future, with pleasing little memories and thoughts in our hearts. As we turn back the pages of these past twelve years, we recall the first day we started to school-that homesick feeling as our parents left us seated at a little desk surrounded by new and strange faces. But time progressed, and we recall the day we took our first paper, which the teacher had marked, home, the fun we had playing Boys Catch the Girls during recess, and trips to the High School to see an important assembly program-how we had waited for those. The day we entered seventh grade and gathered with the others in the gymnatorium, we were nervous and scared, and yet so anxious to find out what was ahead for us. Pupils from the William Penn and the William Shelly joined hands and formed the nucleus of the Class of '47, being joined by additional pupils in our ninth year. We chose our class colors, ordered our class jewelry, produced a class play, and finally joined for Commencement, all as a group Wanting to do our best to better our lives and the lives of those who will take our place in West York High.
